Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿamma baʿd!
The most virtuous and preferred method of fasting the six days of Shawwal is to begin these fasts immediately after Eid al-Fitr, and to observe them consecutively for six continuous days. According to scholars, this is the most superior approach because it best aligns with the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ.
«ثُمَّ اَتْبَعَه سِتًّا»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb aṣ-Ṣiyām, Bāb Istiḥbāb Ṣawm Sittah Ayyām min Shawwāl, Ḥadīth: 1164)
“Then followed it with six (days of fasting).”
These words make it clear that beginning the fasts right after Eid is closest to the Sunnah.
✔ This method beautifully exemplifies eagerness in pursuing righteousness.
✔ Islamic texts strongly encourage believers to hasten towards acts of goodness.
✔ Praise is also given to those who seize opportunities for virtuous deeds.
✔ This approach involves carefulness and precaution, which is a hallmark of complete servitude (kāmil ʿubūdiyyah).
✔ When a person has both the time and opportunity for a good deed, it should not be wasted.
✔ Life circumstances can change at any moment, and no one knows what lies ahead. Thus, every opportunity for virtue must be fully utilized.
✔ Whenever one has the chance to perform a good deed, one should act upon it without delay.
✔ In all matters, and especially in righteous actions, this should be the adopted approach.
