Regarding him, Ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله says:
كذلك أبو الحسن الأشعري نقل الإجماع على أن الله استوى على عرشه.
“Likewise, Imām Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī نقل الإجماع (has transmitted the consensus) that Allah is established (istawā) upon His Throne.”

For further details, one should study Imām Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī’s books:
He himself writes:
إن الله سبحانه على عرشه، كما قال: (الرحمن على العرش استوى).
“Indeed, Allah – Glorified is He – is upon His Throne, as He has said:
(ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱسْتَوَىٰ)
‘The Most Merciful rose over the Throne.’”
[Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn, p. 290]
He said:
إني أحذر إخواني المؤمنين مذهب الحلولية...
“I warn my believing brothers against the doctrine of the Ḥulūliyyah — those with whom Shayṭān played his game and who, because of their wicked beliefs, deviated from the path of the scholars.
Their doctrines are repugnant — only a deluded or destroyed soul would adopt them.
They claim that Allah resides in everything.
The filth of their belief has led them to speak about Allah in ways that are rejected by sound-minded scholars.
Their claims are supported neither by the Book, nor the Sunnah, nor by the sayings of the Companions رضي الله عنهم, nor the statements of the Imāms of the Muslims.”

He further states:
الذي يذهب إليه أهل العلم أن الله عز وجل على عرشه فوق سماواته...
“What the scholars of knowledge hold as belief is that Allah عز وجل is above His Throne, over the heavens, and His knowledge encompasses all things.
He encompasses by His knowledge everything He has created — in the highest heavens and throughout all the seven earths.”

❖ Fourth Century Scholars of Islam
✦ Imām Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī رحمه الله (d. 324 AH)
