Belief in the Messengers

Author: Shaykh Hafiz Abdul Sattar Al-Hammad (May Allah protect him)

آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَبِرُسُلِهِ

"I believe in Allah and in His messengers." [Sahih Bukhari / Al-Janaiz: 3011]

Benefits:

The reason for the revelation of this Hadith is that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) struck the back of a Jewish boy from Medina, Ibn Sayyad, he said, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" The boy looked at him and replied, "I bear witness that you are a messenger to the unlettered people, meaning the Arabs." Then Ibn Sayyad said, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) pushed him and replied, "I believe in Allah and His messengers." [Sahih Bukhari / Al-Adab: 6173]

Understanding Belief in the Messengers:

Belief in the messengers means sincerely acknowledging that Allah has sent a messenger from each nation. Their purpose was to invite people to worship Allah and to reject false deities. Moreover, all the prophets and messengers were truthful, righteous, possessors of guidance, generous, pious, trustworthy, and leaders. They were confirmed by clear signs and visible proofs from their Lord, and they conveyed everything that Allah had granted them without concealing, altering, or adding anything to it. Allah, the Exalted, states:

"The messengers are responsible for conveying Allah's commands clearly."

[An-Nahl: 35]

There is no Qur'anic verse or authentic Hadith that specifies the exact number of these prophets (peace be upon them). However, one narration indicates that there are one hundred and twenty-four thousand prophets. [Musnad Ahmad: 178; Vol. 5]

In any case, Allah has indeed sent messengers to guide people, as mentioned in the Qur'an. There is no nation that has not had a warner pass through it. [Fatir: 24]
