Bathing for the Sick – A Research-Based Examination

Question:
Is bathing in a bathhouse beneficial for a sick person?

Mentioned Narration:
Majma‘ al-Zawaid reports:

"Bathing in a bathhouse is beneficial for the sick."
(Majma‘ al-Zawaid, Kitab al-Taharah, Bab fi al-Hammam wa al-Nawrah, 1/388, Hadith 1519; Mashhoorah Manuscript 1/277)

Investigation of the Narration

  1. Presence in Other Sources:
    This narration is also mentioned in Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir al-Tabarani (11/25–26, Hadith 10926).
  2. Weak Narrator:
One of the narrators, Yahya ibn Uthman al-Taymi, is classified as weak (da‘if) by the majority of hadith scholars.
    (Al-Taqrib: 6/760)
  3. Alternate Versions:
The narration also appears in Zawaid al-Bazzar (1/162, Hadith 319), but without the phrase “heals the sick”, only mentioning “cleanses filth”.
  4. Issues in the Chain:
In some versions, the narration is weakened due to tadlees (concealment of the source) by Sufyan al-Thawri, further confirming its weak status.

Conclusion

  • The presented narration is weak in terms of chain of transmission (isnad).
  • One of the narrators, Yahya ibn Uthman al-Taymi, is considered da‘if.
  • Certain versions are further weakened due to tadlees.

Therefore, this narration cannot be relied upon as conclusive evidence regarding the benefits of bathing for the sick.

And Allah knows best.
