❖ The Question

What is the ruling on a mursal narration of a Companion (Ṣaḥābī)?

❖ The Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

The mursal narration of a Companion is considered ḥujjah (authoritative evidence). On this, there is consensus among the scholars of ḥadīth and the imams.

❀ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله (d. 852H) said:
قد اتفق الأئمة قاطبة على قبول ذلك
“All the imams unanimously agree on the acceptance of a Companion’s mursal narration.”
(Hudā al-Sārī, p. 378)

❀ He also said:
هو الذى عليه عمل أئمة الحديث
“This is the established practice of the scholars of ḥadīth — to accept the mursal narration of a Companion.”
(al-Nukat ʿalā Kitāb Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ, 2/548)

❖ Conclusion

The mursal narration of a Ṣaḥābī is accepted as evidence, and this is the consensus of the scholars and the established practice of the ḥadīth experts.
