Authenticity of the Nighttime Sunnah Supplication

Answer by: Fadhīlat al-Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir (ḥafiẓahullāh)


❖ Question:


Is the following nighttime supplication authentically proven from the Prophet (ﷺ)?


Sayyidunā Anas ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه)
reports that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite the following supplication before going to bed at night:


"الحمد لله الذي كفاني وآواني، الحمد لله الذي أطعمني وسقاني، الحمد لله الذي من علي فأفضل، اللهم إني أسألك بعزتك أن تنجيني من النار”

“All praise is for Allah who has sufficed me and sheltered me. All praise is for Allah who has fed me and given me drink. All praise is for Allah who has shown me favor and granted generously. O Allah! I ask You by Your might to save me from the Fire.”


It is further stated that whoever recites this supplication has praised Allah with every form of praise used by all of creation.


❖ Answer:


This narration is authentic and is proven from the Prophet (ﷺ).


Several renowned scholars and ḥadīth authorities have recorded and authenticated it:


Imām Ibn al-Sunnī in his book ʿAmal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah
Imām al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān
Imām al-Ḥākim also included it in his work
Imām al-Albānī (رحمه الله) graded it authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) in his book Silsilah al-Aḥādīth al-Ṣaḥīḥah


❖ Conclusion:


This supplication is authentically proven from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and its recitation is Sunnah. It carries great virtue and is a comprehensive expression of gratitude to Allah.
