Is the Ḥadīth of Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ Authentic? A Detailed Analysis

Is the narration regarding Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ (the Tasbīḥ prayer) authentic from the perspective of isnād (chain of transmission) or not?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
The ḥadīth concerning Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ has been discussed extensively by scholars of ḥadīth. Their evaluations regarding the sanad (chain) are as follows:
◈ Opinions of the Scholars
① Ṣāḥib Mirʿāt and Ṣāḥib Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī
They wrote regarding the ḥadīth of Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ:
«لاَ يَنْحَطُّ عَنْ دَرَجَةِ الْحَسَنِ»
(“It does not fall below the rank of ḥasan.”)
② From the Risālah “al-Tarjīḥ li-Ḥadīth Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ”
In its introduction, it is stated:
«وَالْحَاصِلُ اَنَّ حَدِيْثَ التَّسْبِيْحِ صَحِيْحٌ لِغَيْرِه لِاَنَّ لَه طُرُقًا عَلٰی شَرْطِ الْحَسَنِ ، فَيَضُمُّ بَعْضُهَا اِلٰی بَعْضٍ وَيَقْوٰی بَعْضُهَا بِبَعْضٍ وَيَصِيْرُ الْحَدِيْثُ صَحِيْحًا»
Translation:
“The conclusion is that the ḥadīth of Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ is ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrih (authentic due to supporting chains), because it has multiple routes which meet the conditions of ḥasan. These routes support one another, and by strengthening each other, the ḥadīth becomes ṣaḥīḥ.”
❖ Conclusion
- The ḥadīth of Ṣalāt al-Tasbīḥ is not free from weakness in some chains.
- However, due to its numerous supporting chains, many scholars graded it as ḥasan or ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrih.
- Therefore, its authenticity is established to the extent that it can be acted upon.
