❖ The Rank and Status of the Companions ❖
The Position of the Companions in the Qur’an and Hadith
The noble status and elevated position of the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) are clearly outlined in the Qur’an and the noble Prophetic traditions. Allah has promised them His pleasure and declared:
"رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ"
Despite this exalted position, if anyone attributes statements or actions to them that do not befit their character and stature, such attributions are completely unacceptable. These matters wound our belief and reverence for them, and it becomes imperative for us to declare such reports as outright fabrications and falsehoods.
❖ Prejudice and Allegations in the Name of History ❖
When biased accusations and claims are attributed to these pure personalities under the guise of historical narration, it becomes essential to examine such reports thoroughly. The issue of the Companions is not merely one of reverence but is deeply linked to our core beliefs. Since their greatness is mentioned in the Qur’an and Hadith, historical literature must be approached using the same principles applied when studying Hadith.
❖ Standard of Verification for Historical Narrations ❖
① Verification of the Chain of Narration (Isnad):
Every narration must first be examined to determine if its chain is authentic.
② Scrutiny of the Narrators:
Each narrator within the chain must be assessed for reliability and integrity of character.
③ Confirmation of Events:
The described events should be analyzed in the light of Qur’anic teachings, Hadith, and other trustworthy sources.
❖ Issues with Historical Narrations ❖
Many historical books contain narrations that either lack a chain of narration or are based on unknown or unreliable narrators. For instance, narrators like Abu Mikhnaf, Waqidi, and Hisham Kalbi are well-known for fabrications, and scholars of Jarh wa Ta‘dil (criticism and accreditation) are unanimous in their judgment regarding them.
Even though Imam al-Tabari cited incidents from the era of the Companions in his famous book "Tārīkh al-Umam wal-Mulūk" with chains of narration, many of those chains include these weak narrators. Hence, Tabari’s narrations must also be judged according to the principles of Hadith evaluation.
❖ Principles for Evaluating Historical Reports ❖
✔ Do not base conclusions on the author’s personal opinions.
✔ Each narration must be judged based on Hadith methodology.
✔ The text and chain of every narration must be evaluated separately.
❖ Belief About the Companions ❖
According to Ahl al-Sunnah, after the Prophets, the Companions are the best of mankind. The Prophet ﷺ stated that the best era is his own and that of his Companions. Although individual Companions are not infallible, their consensus is considered free from error.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"My Ummah will never unite upon falsehood"
(Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2167)
❖ Historical Narrations and the Companions ❖
If any narration casts doubt upon the character of a Companion and that narration has a weak chain or relies on unknown narrators, then such a narration is not acceptable.
Even if a narration is authentic, it may refer to a human lapse that Allah may forgive.
The Qur’an promises Paradise and Divine pleasure for the Companions:
"وَكُلًّا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْحُسْنَىٰ"
“And to each, Allah has promised the best [reward]”
(Surah al-Hadid: 10)
❖ Prejudice and the Misuse of Historical Reports ❖
In today’s era, some individuals, driven by prejudice, criticize the Companions and issue judgments against them based on weak historical accounts. This attitude is not only contrary to scholarly integrity but could also be detrimental to one’s Hereafter. Ironically, some reject authentic Hadiths fearing confusion, yet they readily accept weak historical narrations rooted in bias.

The belief of Ahl al-Sunnah is that the Companions are the most virtuous humans after the Prophets, though not infallible. When analyzing historical narrations, it is crucial to evaluate their chains and content based on the principles of Hadith. Rather than passing judgment on the Companions, the correct approach is to entrust their matter to Allah, for He has promised them His forgiveness and pleasure.
