Authenticity of Hadiths on Kissing the Eyes (Taqbil al-‘Aynayn)

Source: Fatawa ‘Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1, Pages 254–256

✔ Ruling:

The Hadiths related to Taqbil al-‘Aynayn (kissing the eyes) — specifically the act of kissing the fingers and placing them on the eyes upon hearing the name of the Prophet ﷺ during the Adhan — are all fabricated (mawdu‘) and baseless.

✿ Scholarly Evaluations:

  • Shaykh Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti in Taysir al-Maqal stated:
"All Hadiths narrated regarding kissing the fingers and placing them on the eyes upon hearing the name of the Prophet ﷺ during the testimony in the Adhan are fabricated."
  • Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari, in his treatise on fabricated Hadiths (Risalah Mawdu‘at), also declared these Hadiths baseless.
  • Shah ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Muhaddith Dehlawi and Hasan ‘Ali Muhaddith Lakhnawi similarly categorized the Hadiths of Taqbil al-‘Aynayn as unreliable, and regarded practicing it as bid‘ah if done believing it to be Sunnah.
  • Imam al-Shawkani affirmed in Majma‘ al-Bihar that the Hadiths transmitted on this topic are unreliable, and their narrators are unknown (majhul).

✔ Summary:

◈ All Hadiths concerning Taqbil al-‘Aynayn are fabricated and baseless.
◈ The four Imams and major Hadith scholars did not accept them, nor considered them actionable.
Performing this act as a Sunnah is an innovation (bid‘ah), as it lacks any authentic foundation.
