Question

The narrations in Mishkat al-Masabih and Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi mention wiping over socks (jurabayn). What is the status of their chains? And is wiping over socks permissible?

Answer

Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!

Hadith Authenticity

The hadith on wiping over socks is narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi (رحمه الله) in his Jami‘ with a chain of transmission.

After narrating it, Imam al-Tirmidhi said:

"هٰذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ"
“This is a hasan sahih hadith.”
(Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi 1/100)

Scholarly Verification

  • Shaykh Nasir al-Din al-Albani (رحمه الله) also graded the hadith as sahih (Sahih al-Tirmidhi).
  • Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi and Ahmad Shakir (رحمهما الله) also authenticated it (al-Mas’h ‘ala al-Jawrabayn).

Ruling

Since the hadith is authentic, wiping over socks that meet the Shari‘ah conditions (thick, covering the area, and worn after full wudu) is permissible.
