❖ Question
Pīr Badīʿ al-Dīn Shāh رحمه الله, in Tawḥīd Khāliṣ (p. 177), quoted a narration from Imām al-Dhahabī’s al-ʿUlūw (p. 113):
"On the day of the shūrā, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه took the pledge of allegiance for ʿUthmān رضي الله عنه. Then he raised his head towards the sky and said:
اللهم اشهد
Pīr Ṣāḥib also cited this narration from Ibn Kathīr’s al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah (vol. 7, p. 147).
Likewise, al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī mentioned it in his Tārīkh (vol. 5, p. 41) with a chain of transmission.
The question: What is the status of the chain of this narration?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, wa al-ṣalātu wa al-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
◈ This narration is cited without chain in al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah (vol. 7, p. 152) and also in Imām al-Dhahabī’s Kitāb al-ʿUlūw.
◈ However, in Tārīkh Ibn Jarīr (vol. 4, p. 238), the narration is mentioned with a chain of transmission, in which appears the narrator:
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Thābit ʿImrān ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar – who has been declared matrūk (abandoned).
◈ The isnāds of the narrations preceding this (p. 227) are also unclear.
❖ Conclusion
This narration is not established in terms of sanad and therefore cannot be accepted as authentic.
