Authenticity of "واجبرنی" and Duas Between Two Sajdahs

Six Supplications Between Two Prostrations and the Authenticity of the Phrase "وَاجْبُرْنِي"

Question:

Is the phrase "وَاجْبُرْنِي" authentically reported in the supplication made between the two prostrations (sujood)?

❖ Answer by

Shaykh Kaleem Hussain (ḥafiẓahullāh) and Researcher Kamran Ilahi Zaheer (ḥafiẓahullāh)

✿ Mention of "وَاجْبُرْنِي" in Narrations

The addition of "وَاجْبُرْنِي" is transmitted in some narrations along with the well-known supplication:

"اللهم اغفر لي، وارحمني، واهدني، وعافني، وارزقني"

Sources referencing this include:

Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Kitab as-Salah, Ḥadīth: 284
Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab Iqamat al-Salat, Ḥadīth: 898

On the basis of these Ahadith, Shaykh Nadeem Ayaz (ḥafiẓahullāh) affirms that "وَاجْبُرْنِي" is indeed reported.

✿ Research of Shaykh Abdul Rauf Sandhu (رحمه الله)

According to Shaykh Abdul Rauf Sandhu (رحمه الله), this specific supplication — with the restriction of being between the two prostrations — is not firmly established.

He has authored an independent treatise on this subject:

"تنوير العينين ما يقال بين السجدتين"
(“Tanwīr al-‘Aynayn fī Mā Yuqāl Bayna as-Sajdatayn”)

In this booklet, he has presented a detailed critical analysis of this issue.

✿ Narration from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet ﷺ used to say between the two prostrations:

"اللهم اغفر لي وارحمني واجبرني واهدني وارزقني"
[Sunan Abi Dawud: 850, Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi: 284, Sunan Ibn Majah: 898 — Authenticated by Al-Albani]

This narration includes the phrase "وَاجْبُرْنِي" in the supplication of the Prophet ﷺ.

Critical Observation:

➤ In Sunan Abi Dawud, the phrase "وَاجْبُرْنِي" is not present in the wording.

➤ In Sunan Ibn Majah, the wording of the supplication differs:

"رب اغفر لي وارحمني واجبرني وارزقني وارفعني"

This point of variation has been clarified by Shaykh Kaleem Hussain (ḥafiẓahullāh).

✿ The Most Authentic Supplication Between the Two Prostrations

The most authentic and well-established supplication for the interval between the two prostrations is what is reported in Sunan Abi Dawud:

"رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي"
[Sunan Abi Dawud: 850]

This view is further supported by Researcher Kamran Ilahi Zaheer (ḥafiẓahullāh).

❖ Conclusion:

✔ Although the phrase "وَاجْبُرْنِي" is mentioned in some narrations, there is variation in the wording across different sources.

✔ The most authentic and strongest narration for what should be recited between the two prostrations is:

"رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي"

✔ Other supplications with additional phrases are also transmitted, but there exists disagreement regarding their authenticity.
