Authenticity Analysis of the Narration on Seeing Allah in a Dream and Entering Paradise

Is the One Who Sees Allah in a Dream Destined for Paradise? — Critical Analysis of the Narration

Source:
Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 3 – Issues of Tawheed and Sunnah, p. 63

Question:

Is the person who sees Allah in a dream guaranteed to enter Paradise?

Narration Cited:

In Sunan al-Dārimī (3/51), a statement is attributed to Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn رحمه الله:

"من راى ربه في المنام دخل الجنة"
“Whoever sees his Lord in a dream will enter Paradise.”

Full Chain of Narration:

"أخبرنا نعيم بن حماد عن عبد الحميد بن عبد الرحمن عن قطبة عن يوسف عن ابن سيرين"
(Sunan al-Dārimī: 2156, alt. numbering: 2196)

Status of the Chain:

The chain contains Yūsuf ibn Maymūn, who has been declared severely weak and unreliable by the leading Muḥaddithīn.

Criticism from the Scholars:

  • Imām al-Bukhārī: "حديث منكر جدا" — “A very severely rejected ḥadīth.” (al-Ḍuʿafāʾ, p. 420)
  • Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī: "ليس بالقوي، منكر الحديث جدا، ضعيف" (al-Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl, 9/230)
  • Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī: "واهي الحديث" (Asʾilat al-Barzīʿī, 2/459)
  • Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn: "لَيْس بِشَيْء" (Suʾālāt Ibn al-Junayd, 769)

Additional Scholarly Assessments:

  • Imām al-Bayhaqī: "وهو منكر الحديث" (Shuʿab al-Īmān: 7311)
  • Imām al-Dāraquṭnī: "وكان ضعيفاً" (al-ʿIlal, 13/117)
  • Ibn Ḥajar: "ضعیف" (Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb: 7889)
  • al-Dhahabī: "لين" (al-Mujarrad fī Asmāʾ al-Rijāl Ibn Mājah: 1413)
  • al-Haythamī: Despite mentioning Ibn Ḥibbān’s authentication, concluded: "ضعفه الجمهور" — “The majority have declared him weak.” (Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid, 10/200)

Note on Ibn Ḥibbān’s Authentication:

Ibn Ḥibbān’s positive grading contradicts his own criticism and the consensus of the majority, thus it is not relied upon in this case.

Conclusion:

This narration is weak and rejected. It cannot be authentically attributed to Imām Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn رحمه الله, and there is no sound evidence to claim that merely seeing Allah in a dream guarantees entry into Paradise.
