✒ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
After hearing the Adhan, certain acts are prescribed in authentic narrations:
It is prescribed to send Salat (Darood) upon the Prophet ﷺ after Adhan, as narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr رضي الله عنهما that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"When you hear the Mu’adhdhin, say as he says. ثم صلوا علي (Then send Salat upon me)."
[Muslim 374, also Abu Dawood 523, Tirmidhi 3614, Nasai 2/25, Ahmad 2/168, Abu ‘Awanah 1/337, Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar 1/85, Bayhaqi 1/309]
Narrated from Jabir رضي الله عنه, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Whoever recites this supplication after hearing the Adhan shall be entitled to my intercession on the Day of Resurrection."
اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيْلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثُهُ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا الَّذِى وَعَدْتَهُ
[Bukhari 614, Book of Adhan: Chapter on Supplication at the Time of the Call; Abu Dawood 529, Tirmidhi 211, Nasai 2/26, Ibn Majah 722, Ahmad 3/354, Bayhaqi 1/410, Sharh al-Sunnah 2/73]
Note: Additions such as
"والدرجة الرفيعة", "وارزقنا شفاعته يوم القيامة", and
"إنك لا تخلف الميعاد"
are not authentically established in any Sahih Hadith.

After a brief pause following the Adhan, Iqamah should be pronounced in the prescribed Sunnah manner:
From Anas رضي الله عنه:
"Bilal was commanded to pronounce the Adhan in double phrases and the Iqamah in single phrases, except for 'قَدْ قَامَتِ ٱلصَّلَاةُ' which is to be repeated."
[Bukhari 605, Book of Adhan: Chapter on Double Pronouncement; Muslim 378, Abu Dawood 508, Tirmidhi 193, Ibn Majah 730, Ahmad 3/103, Darimi 1/270]
The Hadith concerning the initial instruction of Adhan also mentions single recitation of Iqamah phrases.
[Saheeh: Saheeh Abi Dawood 469, Book of Salah: Chapter on How to Call Adhan; Ibn Majah 706, Ibn Jarood 158, Daraqutni 1/241]
✔ According to the majority of scholars, including Imam Shafi‘i, Imam Ahmad, the phrases of Iqamah should be said once, except for "قَدْ قَامَتِ ٱلصَّلَاةُ".
✔ Imam Khattabi noted that the practice of single recitation of Iqamah words (except one) is established in Haramayn, Hijaz, Syria, Yemen, Egypt, the Maghrib, and other distant Muslim lands.
✔ The following Companions and scholars held this view:
‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, Ibn ‘Umar, Anas, Hasan al-Basri, al-Zuhri, Sa‘eed ibn al-Musayyib, ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz, al-Awza‘i, Ahmad, Ishaq, Abu Thawr, Yahya ibn Yahya, Dawud, and Ibn al-Mundhir رحمهم الله.
The Hanafis maintain that Iqamah should be recited in double phrases, like the Adhan.
Ibn Hazm رحمه الله stated that the practice of double Iqamah was abrogated by the Hadith of Anas رضي الله عنه.
