⭑ The Sunnah Supplication Between Two Prostrations in Salah ⭑
Source: Fatāwā ʿUlamāʾ-e-Ḥadīth, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Volume 1
A supplication reported in the Hadith states:
"اللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْلِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي"
"O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me well-being, and provide for me."
(Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi)
It is said that this narration has a weak chain due to the tadlīs (concealment in transmission) of Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, yet both al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī have authenticated it.
Is this narration authentic?
If not, then what is the authentic supplication that the Prophet ﷺ would recite between the two prostrations?
The Prophet ﷺ would most frequently recite this supplication between the two prostrations:
"رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي"
"My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me."
(Sunan Abū Dāwūd)
As for the supplication:
"اللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْلِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي"

Is this narration authentic?
If not, then what is the authentic supplication that the Prophet ﷺ would recite between the two prostrations?
✿ Answer:
The Prophet ﷺ would most frequently recite this supplication between the two prostrations:
"رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي"
"My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me."
(Sunan Abū Dāwūd)
◈ Discussion on the Authenticity of the Other Supplication
As for the supplication:
"اللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْلِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي"
- The chain of this narration includes Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, who is known for tadlīs (transmitting narrations in a concealed manner).
- Due to this, the isnād is considered weak by many scholars.
- However, al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī have classified the narration as authentic (ṣaḥīḥ).
✔ The Stronger and More Widely Reported Supplication
The most reliable and frequently transmitted supplication from the Prophet ﷺ between the two prostrations is:
"رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي"
- This version is well-supported by multiple narrations,
- And is found in several authentic collections of Hadith with strong chains of transmission.
❖ Conclusion
While the supplication "اللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي..." is recorded in some Hadith sources, the weakness in its chain due to tadlīs renders it less reliable. The authentic and well-established Sunnah supplication that the Prophet ﷺ regularly recited between the two prostrations is:
"رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي"
Muslims are therefore encouraged to act upon this firmly established Sunnah in their prayers.
