❀ Authentic References on Loud Recitation of Talbiyah During Hajj and Umrah by the Companions (رضي الله عنهم)​


The narrations of the noble Companions (رضي الله عنهم) regarding the loud recitation of Talbiyah during Hajj and Umrah are a clear and explicit proof of their adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and their practical embodiment of it.


◈ Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنهما)​


Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنهما) used to recite the Talbiyah aloud during Hajj and Umrah, emulating the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ:


"كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا إِذَا اسْتَوَتْ بِهِ رَاحِلَتُهُ قَائِمَةً أَهَلَّ بِالتَّوْحِيدِ: لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Hajj, Chapter: Talbiyah, Hadith No. 1549)


Translation: When Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنهما) would settle himself upright on his mount, he would begin to recite the Talbiyah:
"Labbaika Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaika La Shareeka Laka Labbaik..."


Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه)


According to the narration of Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions recited Talbiyah aloud during Hajj:


"أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ مَعَ أَصْحَابِهِ فَسَمِعَهُمْ يُلَبُّونَ رَفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَهُمْ بِالتَّلْبِيَةِ.”
(Sunan an-Nasa’i, Book of Manasik, Hadith No. 2759)


Translation: Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ went out with his Companions and heard them reciting Talbiyah loudly.


◈ Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه)​


Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions recited the Talbiyah aloud during both Hajj and Umrah:


"فَصَلَّى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي المَسْجِدِ، ثُمَّ رَكِبَ القَصْوَاءَ، فَلَمَّا اسْتَوَتْ بِهِ عَلَى البَيْدَاءِ أَهَلَّ.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book of Hajj, Hadith No. 1184)


Translation: Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه) stated that the Prophet ﷺ prayed in the mosque, then mounted his camel. When the camel was upright on the plain of Bayda, he began to recite the Talbiyah aloud.


◈ Umar bin Khattab (رضي الله عنه)​


Umar bin Khattab (رضي الله عنه) preferred and practiced reciting the Talbiyah aloud during Hajj and Umrah, considering it the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ:


"عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُلَبِّي فِي الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ رَفْعَ الصَّوْتِ.”
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith No. 12771)


Translation: Umar bin Khattab (رضي الله عنه) used to recite the Talbiyah aloud during Hajj and Umrah.


Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه)


Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) also recited the Talbiyah aloud during Hajj and Umrah, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ:


"عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُلَبِّي رَفْعَ الصَّوْتِ بِالتَّلْبِيَةِ.”
(Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq, Hadith No. 8837)


Translation: Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) used to recite the Talbiyah aloud.


✔ Summary and Key Points​


❖ These narrations clearly establish that the Companions (رضي الله عنهم), in adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, recited the Talbiyah aloud during Hajj and Umrah.
Intention (niyyah) is placed in the heart, but Talbiyah is to be uttered by the tongue as a Sunnah practice.
❖ It is recommended (mustahabb) for men to raise their voices while reciting the Talbiyah.
❖ This practice not only revives the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ but also encourages adherence to the example of the righteous Companions.
