Authentic Hadith Collection on Dreams and Their Interpretations

Compiled by: Qari Usama bin Abdus Salam حفظه الله

❀ Introduction to the Interpretations of Dreams

This compilation presents select Hadiths from Mustadrak al-Hakim that are authentic in chain but not widely known among the general public. These narrations provide deep insights into the reality, types, and etiquettes of dreams from the Prophetic tradition.

❀ 1. Dreams Are of Three Types

Narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"In the latter times, the dreams of the believer will rarely be false. The most truthful in dreams is the one most truthful in speech. Dreams are of three kinds:
① A good dream – a glad tiding from Allah ﷻ.
② A dream that reflects one’s own thoughts.
③ A distressing dream – from Shaytan.
If anyone sees something displeasing, let him not narrate it to anyone, rather get up and pray. The dream of a believer is one part out of forty-six parts of Prophethood."

Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8174) – Authentic on the authority of Bukhari and Muslim

❀ 2. Dreams as a Part of Prophethood

Narrated by Anas رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Prophethood and Messengership have ended. There will be no Prophet after me. This saddened the people. Then he said: However, glad tidings (mubashshirat) will remain. They asked, ‘What are mubashshirat?’ He replied: ‘The righteous dreams seen by a Muslim—they are a part of Prophethood.’"
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8178) – Authentic according to Muslim’s standard

❀ 3. A Dream Remains Suspended Until Shared

Narrated by Abu Razin رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"The dream of a believer is one part out of forty-six parts of Prophethood. It remains suspended until it is narrated. Once narrated, it begins to manifest."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8175) – Hasan lizatihi

❀ 4. True Dreams Occur During Deep Sleep

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما:
"When one sleeps deeply, his soul ascends. If it reaches the Throne before waking, that dream is true. If it wakes before reaching, then it is not."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8199)

❀ 5. Pre-Dawn Dreams Are Most Truthful

Narrated by Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"The most truthful dreams occur during the time of sahar (pre-dawn)."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8183) – Sahih

❀ 6. Only True Dreams Remain of Prophethood

Narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ would ask after Fajr:
"Has anyone seen a dream? Indeed, after me, nothing remains of Prophethood except righteous dreams."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8176) – Sahih

❀ 7. Narrate Dreams Only to a Well-Wisher or Scholar

Narrated by Anas رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"A dream is realized according to its interpretation. It is like a raised foot waiting to be placed. So share your dream only with someone who will sincerely advise or is knowledgeable."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8177) – Sahih lizatihi

❀ 8. A Good Dream Is from Allah – Be Grateful

Narrated by Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"If anyone sees a good dream, it is from Allah. He should thank Allah and share it. But if the dream is disturbing, it is from Shaytan; seek refuge in Allah and do not share it—it will not harm him."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8181) – Sahih by standards of Bukhari and Muslim

❀ 9. Evil Dreams Are from Shaytan – Seek Refuge

Same narration as above (8181):
"Bad dreams are from Shaytan. Do not narrate them. Seek Allah’s protection—they will not harm you."

❀ 10. The Prophet ﷺ Forbade Sharing Disturbing Dreams

Narrated by Jabir رضي الله عنه:
"A Bedouin told the Prophet ﷺ: I dreamt that my head was cut off and I was following it. The Prophet ﷺ rebuked him and said: Do not tell us about Shaytan's games with you during sleep."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8182) – Hasan lizatihi

❀ 11. Lying in Dreams: A Severe Punishment

Narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever lies in a dream will be made to tie a knot in a single hair strand on the Day of Judgment."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8184) – Hasan lighayrihi

❀ 12. Another Warning Against Lying in Dreams

Narrated by Ali رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"He who lies in his dream will be tasked with tying two hair strands together on the Day of Judgment."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8185) – Sahih

❀ 13. Seeing a Deceased in White: A Sign of Paradise

Narrated by Aisha رضي الله عنها:
"When the Prophet ﷺ was asked about Waraqah ibn Nawfal, he said: I saw him in a dream wearing white clothes. If he were among the people of Hell, he would not have been wearing such attire."
Mustadrak al-Hakim Hadith (8187) – Sahih
