✿ Question:
Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instruct ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه) and ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه) to ask ʿUways al-Qaranī (رحمه الله) for duʿāʾ? If so, why, when many great Companions were present from whom duʿāʾ could have been requested?
✿ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
Yes, regarding ʿUways al-Qaranī (رحمه الله), the following narration is recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim:
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim – Kitāb al-Faḍāʾil, Bāb min Faḍāʾil Uways al-Qaranī)
Translation:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“A man from Yemen will come to you, his name is Uways. He will leave no one in Yemen except his mother. He once had leprosy, but he supplicated to Allah, and Allah removed it except for the area of a dirham or dinar in size. Whoever among you meets him, then ask him to seek forgiveness for you.”
- The Prophet ﷺ himself informed the Companions of the virtue and status of ʿUways al-Qaranī (رحمه الله).
- He instructed that whoever meets him should request him to make istighfār for them.
- This report is authentically established in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and is a clear testimony to his excellence.
