❖ Question:
If dirty water splashes during the washing process in a washing machine, do the clothes become impure?
❖ Answer by:
Shaykh Fahd Anṣārī (حفظه الله)
Researcher Mudassir Furqān (حفظه الله)
If the clothes contained actual impurity (najāsah), then the splashes from the dirty water will also be considered impure, and any clothing on which such splashes fall will become ritually impure (najis).
However, if the clothes were merely dirty due to dust, sweat, etc., and not due to actual impurity, then after being washed, the splashes from such water will not be considered impure, and they will not render other clothes impure either.
❖ Additional Clarification:
If the water from a place of impurity does not undergo a change in its three characteristics—color, smell, and taste—then its purity remains intact.
In such a case, the splashes will be regarded as pure.
❖ Conclusion:
✔ Splashes from truly impure water (with confirmed najāsah) make other clothes impure.
✔ Splashes from merely soiled but not impure clothes are not impure.
✔ If water has not changed in color, smell, or taste due to impurity, its purity remains valid.
