Question
Are human hair najis (impure)?
Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
✿ Human hair is not impure (najis); rather, it is pure (ṭāhir).
❀ Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (RA) narrated:
إنه سمع معاوية بن أبى سفيان عام حج على المنبر، فتناول قصة من شعر.
“He heard Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān (RA) during the year of Ḥajj while on the pulpit, holding a lock of hair in his hand.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3468, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2127)
❀ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (RA) (463 AH) said:
“This ḥadīth is proof that the hair of the children of Ādam is pure. Do you not see that Muʿāwiyah (RA) held a lock of hair in his hand during the khuṭbah? Most scholars hold this opinion.”
