Appointment of an Imam Affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami in an Ahl-e-Hadith Mosque

❀ Question:

In an Ahl-e-Hadith mosque, the appointed Imam has been serving for two years but is also an active member of Jamaat-e-Islami. His affiliation has caused a division within the Ahl-e-Hadith congregation. Some demand his removal and the appointment of an ‘alim fully devoted to Ahl-e-Hadith objectives. What should be done in such a case?

✔ Ruling:

Justice demands that if the Imam:

Prioritizes Jamaat-e-Islami over the Ahl-e-Hadith,
Devotes his services primarily to the former,

then it is more appropriate for him to step down voluntarily. The Imam is appointed by a specific religious group and must work in accordance with that group's objectives and values, especially when his salary is funded by the Ahl-e-Hadith community.

The Ahl-e-Hadith community should not passively accept that their mosque's Imam serves the goals of another organization. They must be firm and committed to their religious mission and vision. There is no shortage of scholars within the Ahl-e-Hadith capable of fulfilling this role.

If the Imam continues to:
  • Prioritize his allegiance to Jamaat-e-Islami,
  • Neglect his responsibilities to Ahl-e-Hadith,

then it is appropriate to remove him and appoint an ‘alim fully dedicated to the Ahl-e-Hadith cause.
