❖ Question

Is it permissible to apply kohl (surma) while in the state of iḥrām?

❖ Answer

Yes, if there is a need, it is permissible for a person in iḥrām to apply non-fragrant kohl. There is no harm in doing so.

◈ Imām al-Nawawī (d. 676H) said:
((اتفق العلماء على أن للمحرم أن يكتحل بكحل لا طيب فيه إذا احتاج إليه))
“The scholars are in agreement that if there is a need, a person in iḥrām may apply kohl that does not contain any fragrance.”
(Sharḥ Muslim 8/125)
