Ali رضي الله عنه — My Brother in This World and the Hereafter

❖ Ali Is My Brother in This World and the Hereafter

Authored by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid حفظه الله

✿ Narration of Brotherhood Between the Prophet ﷺ and Ali رضي الله عنه

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما that when the Prophet ﷺ established brotherhood between the Ansar of Madinah and the Muhajirun of Makkah, Sayyiduna Ali رضي الله عنه came weeping and said:

"O Messenger of Allah! You have established bonds of brotherhood among the noble companions, but you have not made me a brother to anyone?"

Upon this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"O Ali! You are my brother in this world and the Hereafter."

❖ Important Note:

This bond of brotherhood was specifically established between the Muhajirun and the Ansar — an Ansari companion was paired with a Muhajir companion. However, since both the Prophet ﷺ and Sayyiduna Ali رضي الله عنه were from among the Muhajirun, the conventional pairing (a Muhajir with an Ansari) could not be applied to them.

✿ Hadith Authentication:

Status of the Chain: Its chain is weak.

  • [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Hadith no. 3720, Book of Virtues, Chapter 21, also found in Mishkat Hadith no. 6093]

Shaykh al-Albani and other scholars of Hadith have declared it weak.

In its chain of narration, Jami' ibn Umayr is a weak narrator.

  • [Also recorded by Ibn 'Adi in al-Kamil (2/588) under the biography of Jami' ibn Umayr – see Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʻīfah wa al-Mawḍūʻah, no. 351]
❖ Conclusion:
Although the sentiment expressed in the narration is noble, the Hadith itself is not authentic due to the weakness in its chain of transmission.
