The Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to perform ḥajj and performed ṭawāf before going to ‘Arafāt.
(Muslim: 1233, Kitāb al-Ḥajj: Chapter on the Recommendation of Ṭawāf al-Qudūm for the Pilgrim)
Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah رضي الله عنها informed me regarding the ḥajj of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Makkah (al-Masjid al-Ḥarām), the first thing he did was perform wuḍū’ and then perform ṭawāf of the Ka‘bah.
(Mishkāt: Kitāb al-Ḥajj: Chapter on Entering Makkah, Section One)
"The Prophet ﷺ ordered the companions to walk briskly (raml) in the first three circuits and to walk normally in the remaining four, between the two corners."
(Bukhari: 1602; Muslim: 1266; Abu Dawud: 1886; Nasā’ī: 5/230; Tirmidhī: 863; Ahmad: 1/290)
When the Prophet ﷺ performed his first ṭawāf (i.e., ṭawāf al-qudūm),
"He briskly walked in three circuits and walked normally in four."
(Bukhari: 1617; Muslim: 1261; Nasā’ī: 9/230; Ahmad: 2/13; Ibn Khuzaymah: 2762)
Preferred opinion: Ṭawāf al-qudūm is not wājib, as there is no clear evidence proving obligation.

Ruling on Ṭawāf al-Qudūm
- Majority (including al-Shawkānī رحمه الله): Obligatory (farḍ).
- Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān رحمه الله: Same view — farḍ.
- Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله: Sunnah.
- al-Shāfi‘ī رحمه الله: Like taḥiyyat al-masjid in ruling.
Preferred opinion: Ṭawāf al-qudūm is not wājib, as there is no clear evidence proving obligation.
