Adhkār and Supplications After Ṣalāh in Light of the Sunnah

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Discussion on Ṣalāh, Vol. 1, p. 200

❖ Question:

Is there any need for adhkār or supplications after ṣalāh? A certain mawlānā claims that there is no need for any adhkār or wadhāʾif after prayer.

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!

This statement is incorrect. It is not true that there is no need for adhkār after ṣalāh, because specific adhkār and supplications after prayer are authentically established from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.

  • The Prophet ﷺ himself taught these adhkār.
  • He also described the great rewards that a believer receives for reciting them.
  • These adhkār are recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and other reliable ḥadīth collections.

✦ Evidence of Post-Ṣalāh Adhkār in Sunnah

Examples include:

  • Saying “Astaghfirullāh” three times after ṣalāh.
  • Saying “Allāhumma anta al-salām wa minka al-salām tabārakta yā dhā al-jalāli wa al-ikrām”.
  • Reciting Āyat al-Kursī.
  • Tasbīḥ, Taḥmīd, and Takbīr (33 times each, with completion at 100).

These are explicitly established in authentic narrations.

✅ Conclusion

  • Adhkār after ṣalāh are Sunnah, proven by numerous authentic aḥādīth.
  • To regard them as unnecessary is incorrect and against the Prophetic Sunnah.
  • Abandoning them means losing out on significant rewards that the Prophet ﷺ promised.
