Adhering to the Prescribed Time for Maghrib Prayer and the Ruling on Making It Up

Fatwa by: Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymeen (حفظه الله)

Question:

I am a young girl, and often I miss the Maghrib prayer because I fall asleep. I make it up the next morning or afterward. What is the Islamic ruling on this?

Answer:
The Islamic ruling is that it is not permissible for anyone to be so negligent in performing Salah that they miss its prescribed time altogether. If a person tends to fall asleep, it is obligatory to appoint someone to wake them up for the prayer. It is not allowed to delay the Maghrib or ʿIshāʾ prayer until the morning.

A person must ensure to perform the prayer within its appointed time. Therefore, this young girl should encourage a family member to help her wake up for the prayer. If there is an overwhelming reason, such as severe illness or extreme fatigue after staying up for several nights, and she fears she will not be able to wake up until the morning, then in such cases, combining the Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ prayers is permissible. However, this allowance applies only in exceptional circumstances.

And Allah knows best.
