Additional Words in Fajr Adhan and Masnoon Supplications After Adhan

❖ Specific Addition in the Fajr Adhan

Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him the words of Adhan and said:

“In the Adhan for Fajr, after 'حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاح', say twice:
(Prayer is better than sleep).”
(Abu Dawud, Al-Adhan, Chapter: Adhan During Travel, Hadith 500; Nasai: 636 – Authenticated by Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and Imam Nawawi)

Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه also stated:

“It is Sunnah to say twice in the morning Adhan: ‘الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْمِ’ after 'حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاح'.”
(Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith 683; Al-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi 1/324 – authenticated by Ibn Khuzaymah)

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما said:

“In the first Adhan of Fajr, say ‘الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْمِ’ twice.”
(Al-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi 1/324 – graded Hasan by Ibn Hajar)

These words are exclusive to the Fajr Adhan and must not be added in other Adhans.

❖ Variation in the Number of Adhan Phrases

In Sahih Muslim, the Adhan begins with "Allahu Akbar" twice, while in Abu Dawud, it begins four times.

The Prophet ﷺ taught both the double and repeated forms of Adhan and Iqamah. However, some restrict repetition only to Iqamah, which is inconsistent with the Sunnah.

Both styles are Sunnah.
True adherence to the Sunnah requires freeing oneself from rigid, blind following of legal schools.
Scholars should present all authentic opinions with evidence.

❖ Addition in the Adhan During Rain

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنهما instructed his Mu’adhin on a rainy day:

(Pray in your homes) or

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same and said:

“Though Jumu‘ah is obligatory, I dislike that you walk through mud and slush.”
(Bukhari, Al-Adhan, Chapter: Should the Imam Pray with Those Present? Hadith 668; Muslim, Salat al-Musafirin, Chapter: Prayer in Homes During Rain, Hadith 699)

Saying ‘الصَّلَاةُ فِي الرِّحَالِ’ or ‘الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْمِ’ is part of prophetic Sunnah and not an innovation.

❖ Invented Additions at the Start or End of Adhan

Adding any words at the beginning or end of the Adhan that are not proven from the Prophet ﷺ is prohibited.

Example:

Mujahid رحمه الله said:

“I was with Abdullah ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما. A man said during the Dhuhr or ‘Asr Adhan:
Ibn ‘Umar said: ‘Take me away from here. Indeed, this is an innovation.’”
(Abu Dawud, Al-Salah, Chapter: Regarding Repeating Phrases in the Adhan, Hadith 535)

❖ Responding to the Adhan

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“When the Mu’adhin says:
‘ﷲُ أَكْبَرُ’ — say the same.
‘أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ’ — say the same.
Repeat the rest as said.
Whoever sincerely responds to the Adhan will enter Paradise.”
(Muslim, Al-Salah, Chapter: Repeating the Words of the Mu’adhin, Hadith 583)

The correct response to 'الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْمِ' is to repeat it as is.
✘ Saying ‘صَدَقْتَ وَبَرَرْتَ’ is unauthentic (Ibn Hajar رحمه الله).
✘ The phrase ‘أَقَامَهَا اللّٰهُ وَأَدَامَهَا’ is from a weak narration (as declared by Imam Nawawi and Ibn Hajar).

❖ Masnoon Duas After the Adhan

1. Sending Salawat Upon the Prophet ﷺ

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-‘As

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“When you hear the Mu’adhin, respond to him, then send Salawat upon me. Whoever sends one Salawat upon me, Allah sends ten mercies upon him.”
(Muslim, Al-Salah, Hadith 384)

Recommended Salawat:

(Bukhari: Hadith 7033; Muslim: Hadith 614)

2. Du‘a for Renewing Faith

Sayyiduna Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله عنه narrated:

“Whoever hears the Adhan and says:
his sins will be forgiven.”
(Muslim, Al-Salah, Hadith 683)

3. Du‘a for Intercession (Shafa‘ah)

“Whoever says this du‘a after responding to the Adhan will receive my intercession on the Day of Judgement:
(Bukhari, Al-Adhan, Chapter: Du‘a During the Call to Prayer, Hadith 614)

❖ What Is "Wasilah"?

The Prophet ﷺ explained:

“Wasilah is a rank in Paradise which is reserved for only one servant of Allah, and I hope to be that one.
Whoever asks Allah to grant me Wasilah, my intercession becomes obligatory for him.”
(Muslim, Al-Salah, Hadith 384)

Wasilah refers to a high and exclusive station in Jannah.
