Actions to Perform Before Friday Prayer in the Light of Authentic Ahadith

This excerpt is taken from the book Tuhfa Juma by Sheikh al-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Yusuf (Founder of Dar al-Hadith Jamia Kamalia).

Issues and Etiquettes Before Friday

Cleaning and Fragrance of Mosques on Friday:

Within the limits of Islamic Shariah, cleaning and adorning the mosque on Friday is a cause of reward and blessings.
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that
“Sayyiduna Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to burn fragrance in the mosque every Friday.”
Reference: (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah Vol. 3/120)

And Sayyiduna Abdullah مجمر used to burn fragrance in the mosque when sitting on the pulpit of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them).
Reference: (Al-Tamhid by Ibn Abdul Barr, p. 415)

Therefore, special care should be taken to clean the mosque and use fragrance in it on Friday.

Getting a haircut and trimming nails on Friday:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه that Imam al-Hadi صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
من أخذ شاربه يوم الجمعة كان له بكل شعرة تسقط منه عشر خطيئات
"Whoever trims his mustache on the day of Jumu'ah will receive ten good deeds for every hair that falls off."
Reference: (Kanz al-Ummal, Hadith No. 17025)

"Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله عنه used to cut his nails and trim his mustache every Friday."
Reference: (Sunan al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi, Vol. 3, p. 244)

Sheikh al-Albani رحمه الله has declared this authentic.

Taking a bath on the day of Jumu'ah is preferable:

Sayyiduna Hazrat Ikrimah رضي الله عنه narrates that some people came to Iraq and asked the Quran commentator Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas رضي الله عنه whether it is obligatory to take a bath on Friday. The Quran commentator رضي الله عنه replied, "No. But it is much better for a person to take a bath, though it is not obligatory." I will now tell you the reason why the bath was prescribed.

"Initially, the laborers used to wear woolen clothes and carry loads on their backs (they were porters), and the mosque was small with a low roof made of palm leaves. Once, the Prophet of Mercy صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم came to the mosque on a very hot day; people were drenched in sweat. Due to sweat and wool, a bad smell spread, and people started feeling the odor from each other. The Mercy of the Worlds صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم also noticed this and said, 'O people! When it is Friday, take a bath and use oil and perfume.'"

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه says that then Allah Almighty granted ease, and besides wool (i.e., they started wearing good clothes), they also stopped working themselves (started employing slaves), and the mosque became spacious. The discomfort caused by each other's sweat also ended.

Reference: (Abu Dawood p. 57, Hadith No. 353)

Sayyiduna Siddiq Akbar رضي الله عنه and Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain Khazai رضي الله عنه narrate that the Mercy of the Worlds صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:

من اغتسل يوم الجمعة كفرت ذنوبه وخطاياه فإذا أخذ فى المشي كتبت له بكل خطوة عشرون حسنة فإذا انصرف من الصلاة أحيز بعمل مائتي سنة

"Whoever takes a bath on Friday, his sins and mistakes will be forgiven, and if he comes walking, for every step he takes, twenty good deeds will be recorded for him. And when he finishes the prayer, he will be rewarded with the deeds of two years."

Reference: (Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabeer, Hadith: 14708)

The Guide of the Universe صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:

من توضأ فبها ونعمت ومن اغتسل فهو أفضل

From this hadith, it is understood that taking a bath on Friday is preferable.

"Whoever performs ablution has done well and properly, and whoever takes a bath, it is better for him." From the above hadith of the Messenger صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, it is understood that the Friday bath is not obligatory but preferable.

The Reward of Bathing on Friday:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged bathing on Friday, as narrated by Sayyiduna Abi Imamah رضي الله عنه from the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
He ﷺ said:
That bathing on Friday removes sins from the roots of the hair.
Reference: (Tabarani, referenced in Al-Mutajar Al-Rabih, translated by Hafiz Abdul Rahman Yousuf Rajowal, p. 210/1, Hadith No. 412)

Similarly, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq رضي الله عنه said that the Intercessor of the Day of Judgment ﷺ said:
من اغتسل يوم الجمعة كفرت عنه ذنوبه وخطاياه
"Whoever bathes on Friday, his sins and mistakes are erased."
Reference: (Tabarani, Majma' al-Zawa'id Haithami 174/2 referenced in Al-Mutajar Al-Rabih translated 210/1 Hadith: 413)

Wearing Clean Clothes and Using Fragrance for Friday:

Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) and Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (RA) narrate. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
من اغتسل يوم الجمعة ولبس من أحسن ثيابه ومس من طيب إن كان عنده ثم أتى الجمعة فلم يتخط أعناق الناس ثم صلى ما كتب الله له ثم أنصت إذا خرج إمامه حتى يفرغ من صلاته كانت كفارة لما بينها وبين جمعته التى قبلها قال ويقول أبو هريرة: زيادة ثلاثة أيام، ويقول إن الحسنة بعشر أمثالها
"Whoever takes a bath on Friday, wears his best clothes, applies perfume if available, then goes to the Friday prayer and does not cause harm to others, then prays as much as is prescribed, and remains silent until the Khateeb finishes the sermon and the prayer, the sins committed from the previous Friday to this Friday will be forgiven for that person."
Reference: (Sunan Abi Dawood, Book of Purification, Chapter on Bathing for Friday, Hadith Number 343)

The narrator says:
Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) said: Rather, the forgiveness extends to three more days as well. Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) states this because the reward for good deeds is multiplied tenfold.

It is not permissible for a woman to use perfume:

However, women should not use such perfume that fragrances the environment, and they should also avoid wearing clothes that are flashy and attract men. They should attend Friday prayers wearing completely simple clothing.
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
أيما امرأة استعطرت فمرت على قوم ليجدوا من ريحها فهي زانية
"That is, a woman who passes by a group of people wearing perfume so that they can smell her fragrance, she is an adulteress."
Reference: (Sunan an-Nasa'i Hadith No. 4737, Sunan Abi Dawood, Book of Manliness, Chapter on Women's Perfume for Going Out, Hadith: 4173)

Similarly, if a woman has applied perfume, she is absolutely not allowed to go to the mosque. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
أيما امرأة أصابت بخورا فلا تشهد معنا العشاء الآخرة
"That is, a woman who has used perfume should not join us in the Isha prayer." (Because her prayer will not be valid)
Reference: (Sahih Muslim Hadith 30-444, Sunan Abi Dawood Hadith No. 4175, Sunan an-Nasa'i Hadith No. 4739)

It is narrated in Sunan Abi Dawood and others that if a woman comes to the mosque wearing perfume, her prayer will not be accepted until she returns and performs a bath (ghusl) as is done for obligatory purification. (So that the perfume is removed)
Reference: (Sunan Abi Dawood Hadith No. 4174, Ibn Majah Hadith 4002, Ibn Khuzaymah Hadith No. 1682)

Note: If a woman cannot enter the mosque wearing perfume that fragrances the environment, then how can it be permissible to wear such perfume when going to weddings or similar occasions? Remember that the use of such perfume is a fundamental cause of fornication. Also, a woman should not wear anklets or any jewelry that makes noise.

Excellent and Special Clothing for Friday:

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):
أن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم خطب الناس يوم الجمعة فرأى عليهم ثياب النمار فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ما على أحدهم أن وجد سعة أن يتخذ ثوبين لجمعته سوى ثوب مهنته
The leader of Medina, peace be upon him, once delivered a sermon on Friday. He saw people wearing dirty clothes and said, "If any of you has the means, there is no harm in having two sets of clothes specifically for Friday, apart from the ones used for daily work."
Reference: (Ibn Majah Hadith 1086, Sahih Ibn Hibban Hadith 2834, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah Hadith 1668, Muwatta Imam Malik Hadith 223)

Benefit:

It is established that there should be clothing specifically for Friday (i.e., clothes only for Friday) which are not used regularly, especially wearing the best clothes. Sayyidina Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to wear a special cloak for Friday.

Using Miswak on Friday:

Using a miswak on Friday: Miswak refers to the wood of a tree; it definitely does not mean a brush or toothpaste. It means the root or branch of a tree, for example, the soft branch of Kikar, Shisham, or Neem, or the root of Tumha or the root or branch of Peelu, which is very beneficial medically and has a pleasant fragrance. It should be noted that there is no harm in using a brush and toothpaste for treatment or cleaning, but they are not a substitute for miswak. The Sunnah practice will be miswak. Miswak is necessary for every prayer, and it is especially necessary for Friday.

Buying and selling and business on Friday is forbidden:

The command of the Creator of the universe:
﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ﴾
"O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on Friday, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you if you only knew."
Reference: (Surah Al-Jumu'ah: Ayah 9, Para 28)

Coming early for Friday:

Those who come to the mosque before the sermon in order are rewarded as if they have sacrificed a camel, a cow, a goat, a chicken, and an egg respectively.
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said:
إذا كان يوم الجمعة قام على كل باب من أبواب المسجد ملائكة يكتبون الناس الأول فالأول فالمهجر إلى الجمعة كالمهدي بدنة ثم الذى يليه كالمهدي بقرة ثم الذى يليه كالمهدي كبشا حتى ذكر الدجاجة والبيضة فإذا جلس الإمام طويت الصحف واستمعوا الخطبة
On the day of Jumu'ah, angels record the names of people at every door of the mosque, the first to come, then the next, and the one who comes first towards Jumu'ah is like one who has sacrificed a camel, the next one receives the reward of sacrificing a cow, and the one after that receives the reward of sacrificing a ram. This continues until the Prophet (PBUH) mentioned the reward of a chicken and an egg as well. When the Imam sits on the pulpit, the angels roll up their lists and attentively listen to the sermon.
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari Hadith 929, Sahih Muslim 850)

Supplication for entering the mosque on the day of Jumu'ah:

When the Imam, the preacher, and the followers arrive at the mosque, recite the supplication for entering the mosque and say As-Salamu Alaikum upon entering.

Stopping conversation and distractions upon the arrival of the Imam:

إذا قلت لصاحبك أنصت يوم الجمعة والإمام يخطب فقد لغوت
"If on the day of Jumu'ah, during the Imam's sermon, one says to his companion to be silent, then he has done a futile act."
Reference: (Sahih Muslim, Hadith number 851)

Similarly, the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying is:
من مس الحصى فقد لغا ومن لغا فلا جمعة له
"Whoever touches pebbles has done a futile act, and whoever does any futile act, his Jumu'ah is not valid."
Reference: (Sunan Abi Dawood)

There should be a pulpit arranged for the Jumu'ah sermon:

In villages, some people do not build a pulpit merely out of laziness and negligence. On the day of Jumu'ah, they hurriedly bring a chair and place it, or some do not even bother to do this. This is a throne of heedlessness and negligence. The pulpit for the Jumu'ah sermon is the Sunnah of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him). By the command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), a pulpit was prepared for him, and thereafter, throughout his life, he delivered the Jumu'ah sermon from the pulpit.
Reference: (See the history of the pulpit in detail in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Jumu'ah, Chapter: The Sermon on the Pulpit, Hadith: 919, 918, 917)

Performing Nawafil by the Follower Before the Khutbah:

Before the Friday sermon, the follower may perform as many Nawafil as he wishes; there is flexibility in this. Two, four, six, eight rak'ahs, fewer or more. The Master of the Universe, peace be upon him, said:
صلى ما قدر نہ
Reference: Sahih Muslim, p. 26, 857

Reference: (Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 882, Mishkat Hadith 381)

"Pray as many rak'ahs as are destined for him."
Reference: (Abu Dawood Hadith 343)

It is narrated in some reports from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that he used to pray twelve Nawafil before Friday.
