Accepting Gifts from Someone Involved in Riba (Usury-Based Transactions)

Written by: The Saudi Fatwa Committee

Is It Permissible to Accept a Gift from Someone Engaged in Riba (Usury)?

Accepting a gift from someone involved in usurious (riba-based) transactions, conducting business with them, or accepting their invitations is permissible.

Evidence:
  • The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) accepted gifts from Jews, despite their involvement in usury.
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) also purchased food from a Jew for his family.

When Should We Refrain from Accepting Their Gifts?

If avoiding dealings with them (such as rejecting their gifts, not buying from them, or not selling to them) could encourage them to abandon riba, then it is better to do so.

This would be an act of cooperation in righteousness and piety, as commanded in Islam.

📖 Allah Almighty says:

«وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ»

[Al-Ma'idah: 2]

"And cooperate in righteousness and piety."

[Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen: Noor ‘Ala al-Darb, 5/241]
