Acceptance of Islam and Rules Regarding Captives

Hadith on Acceptance of Islam and Captives

Narrated by Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه), as recorded in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, regarding Thumamah bin Uthal:
"Thumamah bin Uthal was taken captive. One day, the Prophet (ﷺ) showed kindness to him, and he accepted Islam. The Prophet (ﷺ) then set him free and sent him to the garden of Abu Talha, instructing him to perform ghusl. He took a bath, prayed two rak‘ahs, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Your brother’s Islam has become excellent.’"
[Muttafaqun ‘Alayh - Agreed Upon]

Verification and Referencing:

Sources: Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah (253), Al-Bayhaqi (1/171)
Note: Some narrations do not mention the phrase "Fa-Amarahu An Yaghtasil" (He ordered him to perform ghusl).

Key Points Derived from the Hadith

Ghusl (ritual bath) is recommended upon accepting Islam.
Capturing non-Muslims is permissible in cases of war, corruption, terrorism, or when they pose a threat. However, in times of peace, when Muslims and non-Muslims coexist, it is not appropriate to detain non-Muslims without reason. Similarly, capturing non-Muslims who have a peace treaty with Muslims is not allowed. If a non-Muslim wishes to enter a Muslim country, he must obtain permission and undergo necessary security checks.
Kindness and compassion should be shown to captives, whether Muslim or non-Muslim.
Islam can be conveyed effectively to non-Muslim captives in a positive and persuasive manner.
It is permissible to praise a good person and acknowledge his virtues, as the Prophet (ﷺ) praised Thumamah (رضي الله عنه) by saying, "Your brother’s Islam has become excellent." However, flattery and insincere praise are discouraged. Excessive flattery can be harmful and may lead to humiliation.

Hadith on the Obligation of Ghusl on Fridays

Narrated by Amr bin Salim Al-Ansari, who said:
"I bear witness upon Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه), who said: I bear witness upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he said:
‘Ghusl (ritual bath) on Friday is obligatory upon every adult (mature) person, along with using a miswak and applying perfume (if available).’"

Amr bin Salim said:
"Regarding ghusl, I affirm that it is obligatory. However, whether using miswak and perfume is obligatory or not, only Allah knows best. But this is how it is recorded in the hadith."

Key Points from This Hadith

Ghusl on Fridays is obligatory for every adult Muslim.
Using miswak and applying perfume is recommended, though scholars differ on whether they are obligatory or Sunnah.
Maintaining cleanliness and personal hygiene is emphasized in Islam, especially before attending Jumu‘ah prayer.
