Abdul Muttalib Performed the Aqiqah on the Seventh Day and Named Him Muhammad ﷺ

Compiled by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid (Hafidhahullah)

Narration:Imam Bayhaqi mentions that Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz reported this to him, who said that he heard it verbally from Ahmad bin Kamil Qadhi. Ahmad bin Ismail Salmi narrated to him, who said that Abu Salih Abdullah bin Salih narrated this Hadith to him. Abu Salih mentioned that Muawiyah bin Salih narrated from Abu al-Hakam Tanuqi, who said:

When a child was born among the Quraysh, they would hand him over to the women of the Quraysh. By morning, they would perform certain rituals for the newborn.

When the Prophet ﷺ was born, Abdul Muttalib handed him over to the women of the Quraysh for the same ritual. However, in the morning, the women found that the pot they had set up for the ritual was broken into two, and they saw the Prophet ﷺ with his eyes open, gazing towards the sky. The women came to Abdul Muttalib and said, "We have not seen a child like this before; the pot was broken, and his eyes were wide open, looking towards the sky."

Abdul Muttalib responded, "Take great care of him, for I hope he will achieve a great rank in Paradise." On the seventh day, Abdul Muttalib performed the ritual sacrifice (Aqiqah) on behalf of the Prophet ﷺ and invited the Quraysh for a feast. After the meal, they asked Abdul Muttalib, "O Abdul Muttalib, what name have you given to the child for whom you hosted this feast?" Abdul Muttalib replied, "I have named him Muhammad." The people were astonished and asked, "Why did you choose a name that is entirely different from the names of your forefathers?" Abdul Muttalib answered, "I wish that Allah will praise him in the heavens, and that His creation will praise him on earth."

Poetic Rendition by Saeed al-Fat:
  1. Muhammad’s uncles, father, and elders all arrived
On the seventh day of his birth, they gathered to dine.
  2. Together they sat, celebrating with a feast
And asked Abdul Muttalib about the name he had decreed.
  3. "A sign of Abdullah’s lineage has arrived,
What name have you chosen for this boy?" they inquired.
  4. "I have named him Muhammad," he proudly proclaimed,
"A name that no one else has ever claimed."
  5. "Should I have named him Abdul Uzza or Abdul Manat?"
"That would have been just an ordinary act."
  6. "But to me, this name feels unique and profound,
Muhammad, an unmatched name, to resound."
  7. The grandfather, holding the child close,
Asked everyone to see the face he loved the most.
  8. "Look at my beloved grandson’s radiant face,
How could I name him anything but full of grace?"
  9. “What other name could I possibly choose?
Muhammad is the only name that fits this muse.”
  10. Gazing upon Muhammad’s beauty so rare,
Everyone fell silent, lost in admiration and care.
