Question:
What is the ruling in Shariah regarding a woman looking at a man, whether on television or in general situations?
Answer:
A woman's act of looking at a man, whether on television or in regular circumstances, can fall into one of two categories:
- Looking with desire and pleasure: In this case, due to the potential for temptation and corruption, it is haram (forbidden).
- Looking without desire or enjoyment: According to the correct opinion of scholars, there is no harm in this, and it is permissible. This is based on the fact that it is authentically reported from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she used to watch the Abyssinians play, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) would shield her and allow her to continue watching them.
