A Woman Looking at a Man

Fatwa by: Former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him)
Question:

What is the ruling in Shariah regarding a woman looking at a man, whether on television or in general situations?

Answer:

A woman's act of looking at a man, whether on television or in regular circumstances, can fall into one of two categories:

  1. Looking with desire and pleasure: In this case, due to the potential for temptation and corruption, it is haram (forbidden).
  2. Looking without desire or enjoyment: According to the correct opinion of scholars, there is no harm in this, and it is permissible. This is based on the fact that it is authentically reported from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she used to watch the Abyssinians play, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) would shield her and allow her to continue watching them.
Additionally, it is also permissible because women, while walking in the markets, often see men in a modest and covered state. In such cases, although men do not look at women, women may see them. However, as mentioned, the condition is that there should be no temptation or desire involved. If such temptation or desire is present, then it is haram for women to look at men on television or in other situations.
