Fatwa by: Former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him)
Question:
If a person notices, sooner or later after praying, that one of his socks has a medium-sized tear, should he repeat the prayer or not?
Answer:
When a sock or shoe has a slight tear or a small hole according to common standards, it is forgivable, and performing prayer in them is permissible. However, it is recommended for believing men and women to ensure that their socks or shoes are not torn, so that the precautionary aspect of religion is maintained, and to avoid differences among scholars. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt."
[Sahih Bukhari, Sunan Tirmidhi, Sunan Nasa'i, and Sunan Darimi]
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also stated:
"Whoever avoids doubtful matters preserves his religion and his honor."
[Agreed upon]
And Allah is the source of success.
