A Scholarly Critique of the Hadiths: “Ana min Nūrillāh” and “Lawlāka limā khalaqtul-aflāk”

❖ Question:

Are the following two well-known narrations authentic or weak?

"أنا من نور الله"“I am from the Light of Allah”
"لولاك لما خلقت الأفلاك"“If not for you, I would not have created the heavens”

❖ Answer:

Both of these narrations are fabricated (موضوع) and without any reliable origin.

“I am from the Light of Allah”

✧ Status: Fabricated / Baseless

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar (رحمه الله) states:

"لَا أَعْرِفُهُ"“I do not recognize it.”
📚 Tadhkirat al-Mawḍūʿāt, p. 84

✧ Analysis:

If taken literally, the statement implies one of the following:

That the Prophet ﷺ is part of Allah's essence
→ This is a blasphemous concept, equivalent to claiming divinity.

That the Prophet ﷺ is a portion of Allah’s light
→ This implies division in the divine essence, which is theologically impossible.

That the Prophet ﷺ was created from a light created by Allah
→ Even this is incorrect, as the Prophet ﷺ was born from human lineage, not light.

✧ Authentic Hadith Refuting the Claim:

From ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) — The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The angels were created from light, the jinn from fire, and Adam was created from what was described to you.”
📚 Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2996, Vol. 4, Pg. 294

✔ This clearly establishes that only angels were created from light, while humans are from clay.

✔ The Qur’an confirms the Prophet ﷺ is a human, not an angel:

﴿وَلَا أَقُولُ إِنِّي مَلَكٌ﴾“Nor do I say that I am an angel.”
(Sūrah al-Anʿām: 50)

“If not for you, I would not have created the heavens.”

✧ Status:

Imām al-Ṣanʿānī (رحمه الله):

“This narration is fabricated.”
📚 Tadhkirat al-Mawḍūʿāt, p. 86

✧ Referenced Books Declaring it Fabricated:

al-Fawāʾid al-Majmūʿah by al-Shawkānī – p. 182
al-Mawḍūʿāt al-Kabīr by al-Qārī – p. 59
al-Laʾālī al-Maṣnūʿah by al-Suyūṭī – Vol. 1, p. 272

✧ Reported Versions:

al-Daylamī (via Ibn ʿAbbās):

“Jibrīl came to me and said: O Muḥammad! If not for you, I would not have created Paradise or Hell.”

Ibn ʿAsākir:

“If not for you, I would not have created the world.”

📌 Most of these are without chains, or the chains are weak or broken.

✧ View of Imām al-Albānī (رحمه الله):

“Affirming the authenticity of such a meaning is not acceptable without an authentic source. As for what al-Daylamī reports, I have found no reliable chain. I am certain of its weakness, and its sole presence in Daylamī’s collection is enough to refute it.”
📚 Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah, Vol. 1, pp. 282, 299–300

✧ Position of al-Qārī (رحمه الله):

While he affirmed the meaning of the narration as correct in his view,
he also admitted that it lacks a sound chain, relying on Daylamī’s report, which remains unauthenticated.

❖ Conclusion:

The following two famous statements:

"أنا من نور الله"
"لولاك لما خلقت الأفلاك"

are both:

Baseless
Fabricated
Not traceable to any authentic source of the Prophet ﷺ

✔ They must not be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ Accepting or promoting them as Hadith constitutes a serious innovation in religion.
