A Missed Prayer Should Be Offered As Soon As One Remembers

Hadith on Making Up Missed Prayers

Narrated by Anas (RA):
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "If any of you sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, he should offer it as soon as he remembers it, for Allah, the Almighty, says:'Establish the prayer for My remembrance.' (Surah Taha: 14)
(References: Sahih al-Bukhari: 597; Sahih Muslim: 684 – Authentic Hadith)

Key Lessons and Rulings from the Hadith

➊ A Missed Prayer Must Be Offered Immediately Upon Remembering

  • If someone misses a prayer due to sleep or forgetfulness, they must pray it as soon as they recall it.
  • Sleep and forgetfulness are natural human conditions and are excusable as long as the person makes up the prayer immediately upon remembering.

➋ Using Quranic Verses as Evidence in Religious Discussions

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) supported his statement with a verse from the Quran (Surah Taha: 14).
  • This demonstrates that quoting the Quran is an essential method for explaining Islamic rulings and teachings.
