A menstruating woman neither prays nor fasts, as this matter is established by the consensus of the Ummah. Its evidence is as follows:
➊ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Saʿid al-Khudri رضی اللہ عنہ that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said to women:
『أليس إذا حاضت المرأة لم تصل ولم تصم』
“Is it not the case that when a woman menstruates, she does not pray and does not fast?”
[Bukhari 304, Book of Menstruation: Chapter on a Menstruating Woman Leaving Prayer; Muslim 132; Nasa’i 3/178; Ibn Majah 1288; Ibn Hibban 5744; Bayhaqi 4/235]
➋ It is narrated from Sayyidah Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh رضی اللہ عنہا that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said to her:
『فإذا أقبلت الحيضة فاتركي الصلاة』
“When menstruation begins, leave the prayer.”
[Bukhari 306, Book of Menstruation: Chapter on Istihadah; Muslim 333; Abu Dawood 282; Nasa’i 1/124; Tirmidhi 125; Ibn Majah 621; ʿAbd al-Razzaq 1165; Abu Awanah 1/319]
Shawkani رحمہ اللہ said:
“There is consensus (ijmaʿ) on this issue.”
[Nayl al-Awtar 1/409]
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymeen رحمہ اللہ also issued a fatwa in accordance with this ruling, stating that a menstruating woman neither prays nor fasts.
