A Man Should Not Be Alone with a Woman Without Her Husband or Mahram

📖 Source: This ruling is derived from the Fatwas of the Scholars of Haramain, compiled in the book "500 Questions and Answers for Women", translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

Question:

The Prophet ï·º said:

"No man should be alone with a woman except when she is accompanied by her husband or a Mahram."
📖 (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1341; Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 2171)

What is the meaning of this Hadith? Also, is it permissible for a man to sit with a woman in the presence of her husband without any barrier or segregation in the same house?

Answer:

🔹 Meaning of the Hadith
This Hadith means that it is impermissible for a man to be alone with a non-Mahram woman in a private setting where no one else can see them, except in the presence of her husband or a Mahram (a close male relative whom she cannot marry, such as her father, brother, or son).

This prohibition exists to prevent potential Fitnah (temptation) and the possibility of committing Zina (fornication) or its precursors, which are severely condemned by Allah.

🔹 Permissibility of Sitting with a Woman in the Presence of Her Husband or Mahram
It is permissible for a non-Mahram man to sit with a woman in the presence of her husband or Mahram, provided that:

✅ The woman observes proper Hijab and does not reveal any parts of her body that must be covered.
✅ There is no casual interaction or unnecessary conversation that could lead to Fitnah.
✅ The setting does not encourage free mixing (Ikhtilat) in an inappropriate manner.
