A Life of Disunity or Division into Sects

The people of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) lived in a state of disunity and viewed obedience and listening to authority with disdain and humiliation. Allah commanded them to live together in unity and forbade division.

Allah's command:

"O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims. And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided."
[Surah Aal-E-Imran: 102-103]

These verses remind us of Allah’s favor, especially when referring to the long-standing enmity between the tribes of Aws and Khazraj, whose 120-year conflict was ended by Islam, as Allah united their hearts. As a result, all their grudges were eliminated (as mentioned by Ibn Ishaq). Their final battle, the Battle of Bu'ath, is detailed in historical accounts like Tarikh al-Kamil. Some scholars suggest that these verses also refer to the longstanding disputes among the polytheists of Arabia, including the Harb al-Baws, as narrated by Hasan.

Allah also says:

"So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey."
[Surah At-Taghabun: 16]

In addition to these verses, there are numerous other noble verses in which Allah forbids oppression, division, disobedience, and the refusal to adhere to rightful obedience, which was the custom of the people of ignorance.
