A Deed That Cultivates Hatred for Sins in the Heart

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

Which act can help a person develop hatred for sins in their heart?

❀ Answer:

✦ When a person lives a life of obedience and submission to Allah, hatred for sins naturally begins to grow in the heart.
Among the most effective means for this transformation are:

✿ Consistent Salah (Prayer):

Allah ﷻ says:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ

(Surah al-ʿAnkabūt: 45)
“Indeed, Salah prevents immorality and wrongdoing.”

Maintaining regular and conscious Salah helps cleanse the heart, builds discipline, and instills a natural aversion to sin.

✿ Remembering Death and the Grave:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Remember often the destroyer of pleasures: death.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī)

Frequent reflection upon death, the grave, and the Hereafter softens the heart, awakens the conscience, and leads to a dislike for sin and disobedience.

✿ Obedience to Allah:

Living a life focused on Allah’s commandments results in the soul becoming attuned to righteousness, thus detesting disobedience and sinful desires.

✔ Summary:

Living in obedience to Allah,
Regularly performing Salah, and
Remembering death and the grave
—these are key practices that help instill hatred for sin in the believer’s heart.
Wallāhu Aʿlam.
