A Critical Review of Anti-Islamic Conspiracies on Facebook and the Responsibility of the Ummah

Written by: Zohaib Zaibi

The Initial Concept and Present Reality
Facebook was originally created to connect a few close friends, allowing them to share personal photos, information, and experiences. However, it soon fell prey to the negative aspects of human psychology, such as ideological conflicts and the desire to impose one’s own views on others. Consequently, people from different religions, political organizations, and cultural ideologies began using Facebook to serve their own interests.

Use Against Islam and Pakistan
Global powers decided to use Facebook as a platform against Islam and Pakistan. Around five years ago, Urdu-language groups and pages were created that promoted atheism, secularism, and anti-Pakistan propaganda. These forums focused on:

Anti-Islamic Content:

  • Denial of God’s existence
  • Raising objections about the Qur’an
  • Baseless allegations against the Prophet ﷺ
  • Distorting Islamic history

Propaganda Against Pakistan:

  • Portraying Pakistan as a failed state
  • Presenting it as a dangerous country for minorities
  • Creating false narratives against the Pakistani army

Methods of Atheistic Propaganda
These groups employ various tactics to promote atheistic ideas and mislead Muslims:

Fake Identities:
They create fake accounts with Islamic names to engage in conversations with unsuspecting Muslims, sowing seeds of doubt in their minds.

Claims of Being Ex-Muslims:
They falsely claim to be “born Muslims”, yet their knowledge of Islam is so superficial that they cannot answer basic questions.

Distorting Islamic Texts:
They exaggerate weak or fabricated ḥadīths, misinterpret the Qur’an, and manipulate historical events.

Stealing Photos and Identities:
They steal images from Muslims’ profiles to forge false claims—even fake claims of prophethood—in order to defame Muslims.

Ideological Warfare and the Responsibility of Muslims
Although these objections are not scholarly or academic, but rather malicious, they do raise important questions for Muslims:
Are we responding to these objections in a scholarly manner?
Do our people have the training to counter this propaganda?

The Harm of Emotionalism Among Muslims
A large number of Muslims on Facebook fall prey to fake news or propaganda without verification. The consequences include:
✔ Giving an emotional reaction to false allegations
✔ Issuing fatwās or declaring another Muslim an apostate
✔ Sharing unverified information and harming themselves in the process

Dangerous Tactics of Seditious Groups
These groups create fake accounts in the names of different Islamic sects and spread sectarian content, for example:
✔ Creating accounts in the names of groups like Sipāh-e-Ṣaḥābah, Dawat-e-Islami, etc., to spread hateful content against rival sects
✔ Posting blasphemous or inflammatory material from these fake profiles to escalate sectarian conflict

Responsibilities of the Muslims
Training on Social Media:
It is essential to teach unsuspecting Muslims not to accept everything blindly without verification.

Role of Scholars:
Scholars must fulfill their duty to defend Islam in light of modern challenges, providing reasoned and scholarly responses against false ideologies through the internet and social media.

Legal Measures:
On sensitive issues like blasphemy, all schools of thought must come together to present a unified plan of action.

Raising Public Awareness:
People must be taught to develop the habit of research and verification before reacting emotionally to any issue.

Conclusion:
These seditious groups are exploiting the emotionalism and ignorance of Muslims. Therefore, the Muslim Ummah must unite to counter these conspiracies and present the true image of Islam to the world.
