8 Sunnah Methods of Applying Perfume — In Light of Authentic Ahadith

❖ Question:​


What is the Sunnah regarding the use of perfume (ʿitr)? Kindly explain with evidence.
("Aftūnā Maʾjūrīn")


✿ ① The Prophet ﷺ Would Not Refuse Perfume​


Narrated by Anas (رضي الله عنه):
“The Prophet ﷺ never refused perfume.”

✿ ② Tying Perfume to Generosity​


Narrated by Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه):
“There are three things that are not to be refused: a cushion, oil, and milk.”
“Oil” here refers to perfume or scented oil.

✿ ③ Perfume is Among the Sunnahs of the Prophets​


Narrated in a ḥadīth:
**“Four things are from the practices of the Messengers:


  1. Modesty,
  2. Applying perfume,
  3. Using the miswāk,
  4. Marriage.”**

✿ ④ The Prophet ﷺ Loved and Frequently Used Perfume​


◈ It is well-established that the Prophet ﷺ loved perfume and used it often.
◈ This reflects his personal preference as well as a Sunnah act.


✿ ⑤ Method of Applying Perfume — Hair and Beard​


Narrated by ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها):


“I used to apply the best perfume available to us on the Prophet ﷺ, and it would shine in his hair and beard.”

✿ ⑥ Using Perfume While in Iḥrām​


ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) said:
“It is as if I can still see the glow of perfume in the parting of the Prophet’s ﷺ hair while he was in the state of Iḥrām.”

✔ This shows that applying perfume before entering iḥrām is Sunnah.


✿ ⑦ Women and the Use of Perfume​


Narrated by Zaynab bint Abī Salamah (رضي الله عنها):
“I went to Umm Ḥabībah (رضي الله عنها) when her father Abū Sufyān died. She called for yellow-colored perfume (‘khulūq’ or similar) and applied it to a girl, then to both sides of her own face.”

✿ ⑧ A Woman Applying Perfume to Her Husband​


Narrated by ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها):
“I applied perfume to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with my own hand when he was entering iḥrām and before the ṭawāf of Ifāḍah in Minā.”
