❀ Washing the Face: 8 Sharʿī Rulings Concerning Thick and Light Beards During Wudu ❀
From: Fatāwā al-Dīn al-Khāliṣ, Vol. 1, p. 353
❖ Question:
Is it obligatory to wash the entire beard during wudu, or only a part of it? And is there any difference in ruling between a thick (dense) and a light (sparse) beard?
✔ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. To proceed:
◈ Obligation of Washing the Face and General Ruling on the Beard
- Washing the face is an obligation proven by the Qur’an and Sunnah.
- The Sunnah does not differentiate between thick and light beards.
- However, according to the scholars, if the beard is thick, water is not required to reach inside to the skin.
➊ Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) and the Method of Wudu
In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (1/26), it is narrated:
Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) performed wudu by washing the mouth, rinsing the nose, then washing his face with a handful of water, followed by his right arm, left arm, wiping the head, and washing both feet.
He said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing wudu in this manner.”
➋ Evaluation by al-Shawkānī (رحمه الله)
In Nayl al-Awṭār (1/186), commenting on this narration in Muntaqā, al-Shawkānī writes:
- Though the hadiths in this chapter are usable as evidence, they do not explicitly indicate obligation (wujūb), as they describe actions, not commands.
- Some narrations say:
"This is how my Lord has commanded me."
But such commands may be specific to the Prophet ﷺ.
Hence, in uṣūl al-fiqh, there is disagreement whether a command directed only to the Prophet ﷺ is also general for the Ummah.
➡ Obligations (farāʾiḍ) must be established through definite evidence.
To declare something obligatory when Allah hasn’t, would be to attribute a false ruling to Him.
➌ Practicality: One Handful Is Not Enough for a Thick Beard
- For someone with a thick beard, one handful of water does not sufficiently cover the inside of the beard.
- Denying this fact would be arrogant.
- Therefore, it is better to adopt caution, but without declaring it obligatory.
➍ Statement from al-Mughnī (1/116)
- If the beard is light and the skin beneath it is visible, washing the inner skin is obligatory.
- If the beard is thick, washing the outer surface is enough.
- This is the position of the majority of scholars, except ʿAṭāʾ and Abū Thawr, who held that even the inside must be washed.
➎ Beard of the Prophet ﷺ
- The Prophet ﷺ had a thick beard.
- There is no narration stating that he washed the inner portion of his beard during wudu.
➏ Position of al-Fiqh al-Islāmī (1/216)
According to al-Fiqh al-Islāmī:
- If the beard is thick and the skin underneath is not visible, then:
- Washing the outer part is obligatory.
- Running fingers through it (khilāl) is Sunnah, not wājib.
- It is not mandatory to get water inside due to the difficulty.
This is also supported by the Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī narration showing that:
The Prophet ﷺ used one handful of water to wash his face, despite having a thick beard.
➐ Hair Hanging Outside the Face
- According to the Shāfiʿīs and Ḥanbalīs:
➤ The hairs that hang outside the facial boundary must also be washed, as they are considered part of the face’s scope in wudu. - According to the Ḥanafīs and Mālikīs:
➤ Washing the hanging hairs is not obligatory, as they are outside the defined area of the face.
Supporting Hadith:
From Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (1/120), reported by ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah (رضي الله عنه):
“When a servant washes his face as Allah has commanded, all sins of his face fall away with water—even from the edges of his beard.”
➡ The view that includes the hanging hairs is more cautious and preferred in light of such narrations.
➑ Consensus from Major Fiqh Texts
Al-Majmūʿ (1/374):
- Washing the outer part of a thick beard is obligatory without dispute.
- Washing the inner skin or hairs underneath is not obligatory.
- A thick beard is one that conceals the skin underneath.
- A light beard is one through which skin is visible.
