Virtues of Surah al-Kahf in the Light of Authentic Ahadith
Adapted from the book “Virtues of Surahs and Verses” by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
✿ ❶ The Descent of Tranquility During its Recitation
Musnad Ahmad 4/481 – Chain: Authentic
A man was reciting Surah al-Kahf while a horse was tied in the house. The horse began to panic. The man looked and saw a cloud or canopy overshadowing him. He mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
“Continue reciting, O so-and-so! That was tranquility (سَكِينَة) which descended because of the Qur’an, or descended for the Qur’an.”
✿ ❷ A Shield Against Dajjal – The Opening Verses
Sahih Muslim: 2937
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned the Dajjal (Antichrist) and said:
“Whoever amongst you sees him should recite the beginning verses of Surah al-Kahf.”
✿ ❸ Protection from Dajjal Through Ten Verses
Sahih Muslim: 808
“Whoever recites ten verses from Surah al-Kahf will be protected from the tribulation of the Dajjal.”
✿ ❹ Memorizing Ten Verses Grants Protection
Another narration states:
Sahih Muslim: 809
“Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.”
And in the same narration:
من آخر الكهف
Meaning: “…from the end of Surah al-Kahf.” (i.e., both beginnings and endings have this virtue)
✿ ❺ Surah al-Kahf Will Become a Light on the Day of Judgement
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
من قرأ سورة الكهف كما أنزلت، كانت له نورا يوم القيامة من مقامه إلى مكة، ومن قرأ عشر آيات من آخرها ثم خرج الدجال لم يسلط عليه.
Al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim 1/564, Al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat 1455, Shu‘ab al-Iman 2499 – Chain: Hasan
“Whoever recites Surah al-Kahf as it was revealed, it will become a light for him on the Day of Judgement, stretching from his place to Makkah. And whoever recites the last ten verses and the Dajjal appears during that time, he will not overpower him.”
Imam al-Hakim graded it as authentic according to Imam Muslim’s conditions, and Imam al-Dhahabi agreed.
This narration is also reported in Mawquf form (i.e., words of the Companion) and strengthens the Marfu‘ narration (i.e., words of the Prophet ﷺ).
Hence, reciting the first and last ten verses provides protection from the Dajjal.
✿ ❻ Protection Through the First Three Verses
Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda’ رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
من قرأ ثلاث آيات من أول الكهف عصم من فتنة الدجال.
Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 2886 – Chain: Authentic
“Whoever recites the first three verses of Surah al-Kahf will be safeguarded from the trial of the Dajjal.”
Imam al-Tirmidhi declared the narration ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
✿ Objection Answered – Why Does Surah al-Kahf Protect From Dajjal?
Some people object: How do these verses relate to Dajjal?
The answer: The statement of the Prophet ﷺ is sufficient for us—even if we don’t understand the wisdom, we must accept it.
However, scholars have explained the wisdom:
Imam Ibn al-Jawzi (508–597 AH) said:
"الدجال : الكذاب، وقد اشتهر عند الإطلاق بالذي يخرج فى آخر الزمان…"
“When the term Dajjal is used, it refers to the great liar who will appear at the end of time. The word ‘protection’ means safety. As for specifying the first ten verses, the apparent wisdom is in these words...”
He explains that:
- The verse:
[Al-Kahf: 2]
“To warn of a severe punishment from Him” – reassures against the might of Dajjal. - The verses:
[Al-Kahf: 2–3]
“And give glad tidings to those who do righteous deeds…” – encourage patience against Dajjal’s temptations. - The verse:
[Al-Kahf: 5]
“Grievous is the word that comes from their mouths” – condemns false claims like divinity, refuting Dajjal’s claim. - The verse:
[Al-Kahf: 10]
“When the youths took refuge in the cave…” – shows patience in trials and trust in Allah.
Likewise, for the last ten verses, he mentions:
- وَعَرَضْنَا جَهَنَّمَ [Al-Kahf: 100] – contrasts Dajjal’s fire with Hellfire.
[Al-Kahf: 101] – shows blindness of Dajjal’s followers.
[Al-Kahf: 110] – confirms the oneness of Allah and exposes Dajjal's falsehood.
These verses collectively shatter Dajjal’s deception and prove that he cannot be divine.

✿ ❼ Virtue of Reciting Surah al-Kahf on Fridays
Another narration says:
Al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim 2/368 – Chain: Hasan
“Whoever recites Surah al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays.”
Imam al-Hakim graded it as authentic.
✿ ❽ Virtue of Reciting It on Thursday Night
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri رضي الله عنه said:
من قرأ سورة الكهف ليلة الجمعة، أضاء له من النور فيما بينه وبين البيت العتيق.
Sunan al-Darimi: 3450 – Chain: Authentic
“Whoever recites Surah al-Kahf on the night before Friday, a light will shine from him to the Sacred House (Ka‘bah).”
