Should the Eid sermon be delivered from the Minbar, or without it? If it is to be delivered without the Minbar, what is the correct method?
(Questioner: Muḥammad bin Zakī, Riyāḍ, Saudi Arabia)
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
The Sharʿi method of delivering the Eid Khutbah (sermon) is clarified through several authentic narrations.
◈ Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (Ḥadīth 954)
◈ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (Ḥadīth 49)
◈ Sunan al-Tirmidhī (Ḥadīth 2172)
◈ Sunan Abī Dāwūd (Ḥadīth 1140)
◈ Sunan Ibn Mājah (Ḥadīth 1275)
These sources clearly indicate that on the day of Eid, the Minbar is not to be brought out.
① The Minbar should not be used on Eid day — This is based on multiple authentic narrations.
② The Imam should deliver the Khutbah while standing on the ground, not from a raised platform.
③ This practice is in accordance with the Sunnah and should be maintained to preserve the prophetic tradition.
④ Avoid innovation by refraining from using elevated pulpits or stages during the Eid sermon.
⑤ This ruling applies regardless of the Eid location, whether in open spaces (Muṣallā) or inside a mosque.
The Eid sermon is to be delivered without a Minbar, with the Imam standing directly on the ground, as established by authentic narrations. The use of the Minbar or any elevated structure during the Eid sermon is not supported by the Sunnah.
