5 Clear Qur’anic Refutations of Parwez’s Belief About Jahannam

Parwez’s Definition of ‘Jahannam’

Ghulam Ahmad Parwez distorts the well-established Muslim belief in the Hereafter, denying that Jannah and Jahannam are specific places of the afterlife. Instead, he attempts to bring them into this worldly life through his own interpretation. He writes:

“Jahannam is the name of a human emotional state, but the style of the Qur’an is that it explains unseen, abstract realities through perceptible examples.”
(Jahan-e-Farda, p. 235)

Parwez’s View vs the Qur’an

Parwez claims Jahannam is merely an imperceptible emotional state and denies it is a specific location. This directly opposes the Qur’an, which explicitly states that disbelievers and evildoers will be entered into Jahannam.

Allah ﷻ says:

“No! Indeed, they will be veiled from their Lord that Day. Then, they will surely enter the blazing Fire. Then it will be said to them: ‘This is the Fire which you used to deny.’”

Refuting the ‘Emotional State’ Claim

If Jahannam were merely an imperceptible emotional state, as Parwez falsely claims, then:

➊ What would be the meaning of “entering” it?
➋ How could anyone be commanded to “enter” a state of feeling?

The Qur’anic Reality

The Qur’an’s repeated mention of criminals entering Jahannam proves:

◈ Jahannam is not a mere state but a tangible, real place.
◈ Entry is always into something that exists and is perceivable, not into a non-physical feeling.

The Evidence of the Word “هَذَا” (This)

In the verse ﴿ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَذَا الَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ﴾, the word هَذَا (“this”) is a direct pointer, which can only refer to something present and tangible. If Jahannam were only a mental state, such a demonstrative reference would be impossible.

Conclusion

Parwez’s claim that Jahannam is merely an emotional state, denying its tangible and real existence, directly contradicts the explicit wording of the Qur’an. This belief is false and constitutes open rebellion against the fundamental Islamic teachings about the Hereafter.
