Opening Sermon (Khuṭbah al-Ḥājah)
إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ لِلَّهِ، نَحْمَدُهُ، وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ، مَنْ يَهْدِهِ اللَّهُ فَلَا مُضِلَّ لَهُ، وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَا هَادِيَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، أَمَّا بَعْدُ:
❀ Quranic Verses on Ahl al-Bayt
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا
Allah Almighty said:
“Allah only wishes to remove all impurity from you, O members of the household, and to purify you thoroughly.”
وَقَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
قُل لَّا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا إِلَّا الْمَوَدَّةَ فِي الْقُرْبَىٰ
Allah Almighty said:
“Say, I do not ask you for any reward except affection towards (my) near relatives.”
Hadith ①
The Prophet ﷺ Leaves Behind Two Weighty Matters
Arabic:
«عن جابر بن عبد الله قال: رأيت رسول الله ﷺ في حجته يوم عرفة وهو على ناقته القصواء يخطب، فسمعته يقول: يا أيها الناس إني قد تركت فيكم ما إن أخذتم به لن تضلوا: كتاب الله، وعترتي أهل بيتي»
Translation:
Jābir bin ʿAbdullāh رضي الله عنهما said:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage on the Day of ʿArafah while he was delivering a sermon atop his camel, al-Qaṣwāʾ. I heard him say:
‘O people! I am leaving among you something that if you hold firmly to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah, and my family – the people of my household.’”
Hadith ②
The Verse of Purification and the Cloak (Kisā')
Arabic:
«عن عمر بن أبي سلمة... دعا النبي ﷺ فاطمة وحسنًا وحسينًا فجللهم بكساء، وعلي خلف ظهره فجلله بكساء، ثم قال: اللهم هؤلاء أهل بيتي، فأذهب عنهم الرجس، وطهرهم تطهيرًا...»
Translation:
ʿUmar bin Abī Salamah رضي الله عنه narrated:
“When the verse ﴿Indeed, Allah intends to remove all impurity from you, O people of the household…﴾ was revealed in the house of Umm Salamah, the Prophet ﷺ called Fāṭimah, Ḥasan, and Ḥusayn, and covered them with a cloak. ʿAlī was behind him and he too was covered. Then he said:
‘O Allah! These are the members of my household. Remove impurity from them and purify them thoroughly.’
Umm Salamah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, am I with them?’
He replied: ‘You are on your place, and you are upon goodness.’”
Hadith ③
The Qur'an and Ahl al-Bayt Shall Never Separate
Arabic:
«عن زيد بن أرقم... إني تارك فيكم ما إن تمسكتم به لن تضلوا بعدي: أحدهما أعظم من الآخر: كتاب الله... وعترتي أهل بيتي، ولن يتفرقا حتى يردا علي الحوض...»
Translation:
Zayd bin Arqam رضي الله عنه narrated:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘I am leaving behind for you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray after me. One of them is greater than the other: the Book of Allah – a rope extended from the sky to the earth – and my family, the people of my household. They will never separate until they return to me at the Ḥawḍ (fountain). So consider how you deal with them after me.’”
Hadith ④
Love for Ahl al-Bayt is Love for the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
«عن ابن عباس قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: أحبوا الله لما يغذوكم من نعمه، وأحبوني بحب الله، وأحبوا أهل بيتي بحبي»
Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Love Allah for the blessings He nourishes you with, and love me for the sake of the love of Allah, and love my family for the sake of my love.”
❀ Sayyidah Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها – Her Unique Virtues
Hadith ⑤
Do Not Anger Fāṭimah – It Angers the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
«عن المسور بن مخرمة أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: فاطمة بضعة مني، فمن أغضبها أغضبني»
Translation:
Al-Miswar bin Makhramah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Fāṭimah is a part of me. Whoever angers her has angered me.”
Hadith ⑥
Fāṭimah – Leader of the Women of Jannah
Arabic:
«عن عائشة... إنك أول أهل بيتي لحاقًا بي... أما ترضين أن تكوني سيدة نساء أهل الجنة أو نساء المؤمنين؟»
Translation:
ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها narrated:
The Prophet ﷺ once said privately to Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها:
“Indeed, Jibrīl would review the Qur’an with me once a year, but this year he did it twice. I do not see this except as a sign that my death is near. You will be the first from my family to join me.”
Fāṭimah wept. He then said:
“Are you not pleased that you will be the leader of the women of Paradise or of the believing women?”
She then smiled.
Hadith ⑦
A New Angel Announces the Status of Fāṭimah, Ḥasan, and Ḥusayn
Arabic:
«عن حذيفة... إن هذا ملك لم ينزل الأرض قط قبل هذه الليلة... فاطمة سيدة نساء أهل الجنة، والحسن والحسين سيدا شباب أهل الجنة»
Translation:
Ḥudhayfah رضي الله عنه narrated:
One night, a new angel descended to earth for the first time and sought permission from his Lord to greet me and convey glad tidings. He gave me the glad tidings that:
“Fāṭimah is the leader of the women of Paradise, and Ḥasan and Ḥusayn are the leaders of the youth of Paradise.”
Hadith ⑧
The Four Most Excellent Women in Paradise
Arabic:
«عن ابن عباس قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: أفضل نساء أهل الجنة: خديجة بنت خويلد، وفاطمة بنت محمد، وآسية بنت مزاحم، ومريم بنت عمران»
Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The best women of Paradise are: Khadījah bint Khuwaylid, Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad, Āsiyah bint Muzāḥim (the wife of Pharaoh), and Maryam bint ʿImrān.”
Hadith ⑨
The Prophet ﷺ Would Stand for Fāṭimah
Arabic:
«عن عائشة قالت: كانت إذا دخلت على النبي ﷺ قام إليها فقبلها وأجلسها في مجلسه...»
Translation:
ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها narrated:
“When Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها would come to the Prophet ﷺ, he would stand for her, kiss her, and seat her in his place. When the Prophet ﷺ went to her, she would stand for him, kiss him, and seat him in her place.”
Hadith ⑩
Allah is Pleased with Fāṭimah’s Pleasure
Arabic:
«عن علي قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ لفاطمة: إن الله يغضب لغضبك، ويرضى لرضاك»
Translation:
ʿAlī رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said to Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها:
“Indeed, Allah becomes angry when you are angry, and He is pleased when you are pleased.”
Hadith ⑪
Fāṭimah’s Exceptional Truthfulness
Arabic:
«عن عائشة قالت: ما رأيت أحدًا أصدق من فاطمة غير أبيها»
Translation:
ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها said:
“I have never seen anyone more truthful than Fāṭimah – except her father (the Prophet ﷺ).”
Hadith ⑫
Warning to Relatives – No Salvation Without Deeds
Arabic:
«عن أبي هريرة... يا فاطمة بنت محمد، سليني ما شئت من مالي، لا أغني عنك من الله شيئًا»
Translation:
Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“O Fāṭimah, daughter of Muḥammad! Ask me whatever you wish from my wealth, but I cannot avail you against Allah in the least.”
Hadith ⑬
The Prophet ﷺ Forbids a Marriage that Would Harm Fāṭimah
Arabic:
«عن علي بن الحسين... إن فاطمة بنت محمد مضغة مني، وإني أكره أن يفتنوها...»
Translation:
ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated from al-Miswar bin Makhramah رضي الله عنهما:
When ʿAlī رضي الله عنه proposed to marry the daughter of Abū Jahl while being married to Fāṭimah, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Fāṭimah is a part of me, and I fear she will be tried in her faith. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall not be united under one man.”
Hadith ⑭
Fāṭimah – The Prophet’s ﷺ Secret Keeper
Arabic:
«عن عائشة... فأخبرني أن جبريل كان يعارضه القرآن كل سنة... ثم قال: يا فاطمة، أما ترضين أن تكوني سيدة نساء المؤمنين؟»
Translation:
ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Prophet ﷺ secretly told Fāṭimah about his imminent death, which made her weep. He then comforted her saying:
“O Fāṭimah, are you not pleased to be the leader of the believing women, or the women of this Ummah?”
She then smiled with joy.
Hadith ⑮
Imām al-Mahdī from the Progeny of Fāṭimah
Arabic:
«عن أم سلمة قالت: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: المهدي من عترتي من ولد فاطمة»
Translation:
Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The Mahdī will be from my family, from the descendants of Fāṭimah.”
Hadith ⑯
Fāṭimah’s Grief at the Prophet’s ﷺ Passing
Arabic:
«عن أنس... فقالت فاطمة: وا كرب أباه... ليس على أبيك كرب بعد اليوم... ثم قالت: يا أنس، أطابت أنفسكم أن تحثوا على رسول الله ﷺ التراب؟»
Translation:
Anas رضي الله عنه narrated:
When the Prophet ﷺ was in the throes of death, Fāṭimah said,
“Woe to the grief of my father!”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“O Fāṭimah! There is no more pain for your father after today.”
After his burial, she said to Anas:
“O Anas! How could your hearts bear to throw soil upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?”
The Prophet ﷺ and His Grandsons Ḥasan and Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهما
Hadith ⑰
The Prophet ﷺ Rode with Ḥasan and Ḥusayn
Arabic:
«عن إياس عن أبيه قال: لقد قدت بنبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم والحسن والحسين بغلته الشهباء حتى أدخلتهم حجرة النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم هذا قدامه وهذا خلفه»
Translation:
Iyās narrated from his father:
“I once held the reins of the white mule of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ while he was riding with Ḥasan and Ḥusayn. One of them sat in front of him, and the other behind him, until I brought them into the chamber of the Prophet ﷺ.”
Hadith ⑱
The Prophet ﷺ Expresses His Love for Ḥasan and Ḥusayn
Arabic:
«وعن أسامة بن زيد رضي الله عنهما قال: طرقت النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم ذات ليلة فى بعض الحاجة ، فخرج النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو مشتمل على شيء لا أدري ما هو؟ فلما فرغت من حاجتي قلت: ما هذا الذى أنت مشتمل عليه ، قال فكشفه فإذا حسن وحسين رضي الله عنهما على وركيه فقال هذان ابناي وابنا ابنتي ، اللهم إنى أحبهما فأحبهما وأحب من يحبهما»
Translation:
Usāmah bin Zayd رضي الله عنهما narrated:
“One night I came to the Prophet ﷺ for a need. He came out, wrapping something, though I did not know what it was. When I completed my need, I asked, ‘What is this that you are carrying?’ He uncovered the cloth, and behold! It was Ḥasan and Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهما on his hips. He then said: ‘These are my sons, and sons of my daughter. O Allah, I love them, so love them and love whoever loves them.’”
Hadith ⑲
Ḥasan and Ḥusayn Are the Flowers of the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
«وعن عبد الله بن عمر رضي الله عنهما قال: قال النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم هما ريحانتاي من الدنيا»
Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“They (Ḥasan and Ḥusayn) are my two sweet basil-flowers from this world.”
Hadith ⑳
The Prophet ﷺ Became Their Mount During Prayer
Arabic:
«وعن البراء بن عازب رضي الله عنه قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلى فجاء الحسن والحسين رضي الله عنهما أو أحدهما فركب على ظهره فكان إذا رفع رأسه قال بيده أو أمسكهما ، وقال: نعم المطية مطيتكما»
Translation:
Al-Barāʾ bin ʿĀzib رضي الله عنه narrated:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in prayer when Ḥasan or Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهما came and climbed on his back during sujūd (prostration). When he raised his head, he would gently take hold of them and say:
“What a wonderful mount is your mount!”
Hadith ㉑
The Prophet ﷺ Came Down from the Minbar to Embrace Them
Arabic:
«وعن أبى بريدة رضي الله عنه يقول: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يخطبنا إذ جاء الحسن والحسين رضي الله عنهما عليهما قميصان أحمران يمشيان ويعفران، فنزل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من المنبر، فحملهما ووضعهما بين يديه، ثم قال: صدق الله ﴿اِنَّمَاۤ اَمْوَالُكُمْ وَ اَوْلَادُكُمْ فِتْنَةٌ﴾ نظرت إلى هذين الصبيين يمشيان ويعثران فلم أصبر حتى قطعت حديني ورفعتهما»
Translation:
Abū Buraydah رضي الله عنه narrated:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon when Ḥasan and Ḥusayn, wearing red shirts, came walking and stumbling. The Prophet ﷺ stepped down from the pulpit, picked them up, and placed them in front of him. Then he said:
“Allah has spoken the truth: ‘Indeed, your wealth and your children are but a trial.’ (Qur'an 64:15)
I saw these two boys walking and stumbling, and I could not bear it, so I paused my speech and carried them.”
Hadith ㉒
Ḥasan and Ḥusayn – Leaders of the Youth of Paradise
Arabic:
«وعن أبى سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: الحسن والحسين رضي الله عنهما سيدا شباب أهل الجنة»
Translation:
Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه narrated:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Ḥasan and Ḥusayn are the leaders of the youth of Paradise.”
Hadith ㉓
The Weeping of Ḥusayn Hurt the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
«وعن يزيد بن أبى زياد رضي الله عنه قال: خرج النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم من بيت عائشة رضي الله عنها فمر على فاطمة فسمع حسينا يبكي ، فقال: ألم تعلمي أن بكاءه يؤذيني»
Translation:
Yazīd bin Abī Ziyād رضي الله عنه narrated:
The Prophet ﷺ came out of ʿĀʾishah’s رضي الله عنها house and passed by the house of Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها. He heard Ḥusayn crying and said:
“Do you not know that his crying causes me pain?”
Hadith ㉔
Dream of the Prophet ﷺ Regarding Ḥusayn’s Martyrdom
Arabic:
«وعن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما قال: رأيت النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم فيما يرى النائم بنصف النهار ، وهو قائم ، أشعث أغبر بيده قارورة فيها دم، فقلت: بأبي أنت وامي يا رسول الله ، ما هذا؟ فقال: دم الحسين وأصحابه ، لم أزل ألتقطه منذ اليوم. فأحصينا ذلك اليوم ، فوجدوه قد قتل فى ذلك اليوم»
Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما said:
“I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream during midday. He stood disheveled and dusty, and in his hand was a bottle containing blood. I said:
‘May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! What is this?’
He replied:
‘It is the blood of Ḥusayn and his companions. I have been collecting it since today.’
We then counted that day, and it was the day Ḥusayn was martyred.”
Hadith ㉕
Angel Jibrīl Brings the Red Soil of Karbalāʾ
Arabic:
«...استيقظ وفي يده تربة حمراء يقلبها . فقلت: ما هذه التربة يا رسول الله؟ قال: أخبرني جبريل أن هذا يقتل بأرض العراق للحسين... فهذه تربتها»
Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn Wahb bin Zamʿah narrated:
Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها said:
“The Prophet ﷺ lay down to sleep and awoke, visibly disturbed, then returned to sleep. He awoke again, less disturbed than before. The third time, he awoke holding red soil in his hand. I asked:
‘What is this soil, O Messenger of Allah?’
He replied:
‘Jibrīl informed me that Ḥusayn will be killed in the land of Iraq. I asked him to show me the soil of the land where he will be martyred — and this is that soil.’”
Hadith ㉖
The Prophet ﷺ Weeps Holding Ḥusayn
Arabic:
«...فدخل الحسين رضي الله عنه... فإذا عينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تَهْرِيقان من الدموع... قال: إن جبريل... قال: إن أمتك ستقتل هذا بأرض يقال لها كربلاء... فأراني تربتها»
Translation:
Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها narrated:
“One day, the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Let no one enter upon me.’ I waited, but Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه entered. I heard sobbing, and when I looked, the Prophet ﷺ was wiping Ḥusayn’s blessed forehead while weeping. I asked, ‘Why are you weeping, O Messenger of Allah?’
He replied:
‘Jibrīl informed me that my nation will kill this son of mine in a land called Karbalāʾ.’
Then Jibrīl showed him the red soil of that land.”
Hadith ㉗
Ahl al-ʿIrāq Murder the Grandson of the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
«...فقال: أهل العراق يسألون عن الذباب وقد قتلوا ابن ابنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقال النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم: هما ريحانتاي من الدنيا»
Translation:
Ibn Abī Nuʿm narrated:
Someone asked ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما about a muḥrim (pilgrim) killing a fly. He replied:
“The people of Iraq ask about the killing of flies, while they themselves murdered the grandson of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And the Prophet ﷺ had said: ‘They (Ḥasan and Ḥusayn) are my two flowers from this world.’”
Hadith ㉘
Reward for Loving Ḥasan رضي الله عنه
Arabic:
«وعن أبى هريرة عن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال لحسن: اللهم إني أحبه فاحبه واحبب من يحبه»
Translation:
Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said about Ḥasan رضي الله عنه:
“O Allah! I love him, so love him and love those who love him.”
Hadith ㉙
The Prophet ﷺ Longs to Embrace Ḥasan
Arabic:
«...فقال: أثم لكع أثم لكع... فلم يلبث أن جاء يسعى حتى اعتنق كل واحد منهما صاحبه... اللهم إنى أحبه فاحبه وأحبب من يحبه»
Translation:
Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated:
“I went out with the Prophet ﷺ at a time during the day. We walked silently until we reached the market of Banū Qaynuqāʿ. Then the Prophet ﷺ went to the house of Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها and said:
‘Is the little one here? Is the little one here?’ — referring to Ḥasan.
Soon he came running. The Prophet ﷺ embraced him, and both hugged each other. Then the Prophet ﷺ said:
‘O Allah! I love him, so love him, and love whoever loves him.’”
Hadith ㉚
Ḥasan Was the Closest in Resemblance to the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
«عن أنس رضي الله عنه قال: لم يكن أحد أشبه بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من الحسن بن على رضي الله عنهما»
Translation:
Anas رضي الله عنه said:
“There was no one more resembling the Prophet ﷺ than Ḥasan bin ʿAlī رضي الله عنهما.”
Hadith ㉛
Ḥasan Resembled the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
«وعن أبى جحيفة قال: رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وكان الحسن بن على يشبهه»
Translation:
Abū Juḥayfah رضي الله عنه said:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Ḥasan bin ʿAlī resembled him.”
Hadith ㉜
Ḥusayn Resembled the Prophet ﷺ the Most
Arabic:
«وعن أنس بن مالك قال: كنت عند ابن زياد فجيء برأس الحسين فجعل يقول بقضيب له فى أنفه، ويقول: ما رأيت مثل هذا حسنا لم يذكر ، قال قلت: أما إنه كان من أشبههم برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم»
Translation:
Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه said:
“I was with Ibn Ziyād when the head of Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه was brought. He began striking his nose with a stick and said, ‘I have never seen anyone more handsome than him.’
So I said:
‘Indeed, he was the one who most resembled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among the people of his household.’”
Hadith ㉝
Resemblance of Ḥasan and Ḥusayn to the Prophet ﷺ
Arabic:
«وعن على قال: الحسن أشبه برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ما بين الصدر إلى الرأس ، والحسين أشبه بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ما كان أسفل من ذلك»
Translation:
ʿAlī رضي الله عنه said:
“Ḥasan bore the most resemblance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the chest to the head, while Ḥusayn resembled him in what was below that.”
Hadith ㉞
Ḥasan رضي الله عنه Reconciled Two Muslim Groups
Arabic:
«وعن أبى بكرة رضي الله عنه قال: سمعت النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم على المنبر والحسن رضي الله عنه على جنبه ينظر الناس مرة وإليه مرة ويقول: ابنى هذا سيد ولعل الله أن يصلح به بين فئتين عظيمتين من المسلمين»
Translation:
Abū Bakrah رضي الله عنه narrated:
I heard the Prophet ﷺ delivering a sermon while Ḥasan رضي الله عنه was by his side. He would look at the people and then at Ḥasan and say:
“This son of mine is a leader, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great groups among the Muslims.”
Hadith ㉟
The Prophet ﷺ Taught Ḥasan the Qunūt of Witr Prayer
Arabic:
«وعن أبى الحوراء قال: قال لي الحسن بن على رضي الله عنهما علمني رسول الله كلمات أقولهن فى الوتر. قال ابن جواس فى قنوت الوتر: اللهم اهدني فيمن هديت ، وعافني فيمن عافيت ، وتولني فيمن توليت ، وبارك لي فيما أعطيت وقني شرما قضيت ، إنك تقضي ولا يقضى عليك ، وإنه لا يذل من واليت ولا يعز من عاديت تباركت ربنا وتعاليت»
Translation:
Abū al-Ḥawrāʾ narrated that Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī رضي الله عنهما said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me the following words to say in the Witr prayer:
“O Allah! Guide me among those You have guided, and grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being. And befriend me among those You have befriended. Bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Indeed, You alone decree, and none can decree over You. And whoever You take as a protector will never be humiliated, and whoever You oppose will never be honored. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted.”

The Prophet ﷺ Said – Ḥusayn is From Me and I am From Him
Arabic:
«وعن يعلى بن مرة رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حسين رضي الله عنه منى وأنا من حسين رضي الله عنه ، أحب الله من أحب حسينا، حسين سبط من الأسباط»
Translation:
Yaʿlā ibn Murrah رضي الله عنه reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Ḥusayn is from me, and I am from Ḥusayn. May Allah love the one who loves Ḥusayn. Ḥusayn is a noble grandson from among the descendants.”

Seeing Ḥusayn is Like Seeing a Person of Paradise
Arabic:
«وعن جابر مرفوعا: من سره أن ينظر إلى رجل من أهل الجنة ، فلينظر إلى الحسين بن علي»
Translation:
Jābir رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever desires to look at a man from the people of Paradise, let him look at Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī.”

Prophet ﷺ Gave Ḥasan Water First Due to Request
Arabic:
«...فاستسقى الحسن ... فتناوله الحسين ليشرب فمنعه، وبدا بالحسن ... فقال: لا ، ولكنه استسقى أول مرة ... إني ، وإياك ، وهذين، وهذا الراقد – يعني عليا – يوم القيامة فى مكان واحد»
Translation:
Abū Fākhtah narrated from ʿAlī رضي الله عنه:
The Prophet ﷺ visited us one night and stayed over. Ḥasan and Ḥusayn were asleep. Ḥasan asked for water, so the Prophet ﷺ went to a water-skin, poured water into a cup, and brought it. Ḥusayn reached to drink first, but the Prophet ﷺ stopped him and gave it to Ḥasan, saying:
“No, he asked first.”
Then he said:
“You, I, these two, and that sleeper (i.e. ʿAlī) will be in one place on the Day of Judgment.”

The Prophet ﷺ Saw the Martyrdom of Ḥusayn in a Dream
Arabic:
«وعن سلمى قالت: دخلت على أم سلمة وهى تبكي فقلت: ما يبكيك؟ قالت: رأيت رسول الله تعني فى المنام، وعلى رأسه، ولحيته التراب، فقلت: ما لك يا رسول الله؟ قال: شهدت قتل الحسين آنفا»
Translation:
Salmah said:
“I entered upon Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها while she was crying. I asked: ‘Why are you crying?’
She replied:
‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream, and his head and beard were covered with dust. I asked, “What is the matter, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied: “I have just witnessed the martyrdom of Ḥusayn.”’

The Dream of Umm al-Faḍl – A Prophecy of Ḥusayn’s Martyrdom
Arabic:
«...قالت: رأيت كأن قطعة من جسدك قطعت ووضعت فى حجري ... فدخلت يوما إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فوضعته فى حجره ... فإذا عينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تهر يقان من الدموع ... فقال: أتاني جبريل عليه الصلاة والسلام فأخبرني أن أمتي ستقتل ابني هذا ... وأتاني بتربة من تربته حمراء»
Translation:
Umm al-Faḍl bint al-Ḥārith رضي الله عنها narrated:
She said to the Prophet ﷺ, “O Messenger of Allah, I had a terrible dream last night.”
He asked, “What is it?”
She said, “It was difficult. I saw a piece of your body cut off and placed in my lap.”
He said:
“You have seen good. Fāṭimah will give birth to a boy who will be in your lap.”
Indeed, Fāṭimah gave birth to Ḥusayn, and he was in my lap, just as the Prophet ﷺ had said.
One day I came to the Prophet ﷺ and placed Ḥusayn in his lap. I turned around and saw tears streaming from his eyes.
I asked, “O Prophet of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you — what has happened?”
He replied:
“Jibrīl came to me and informed me that my Ummah will kill this son of mine. I asked, ‘This one?’ He replied, ‘Yes,’ and he brought me red soil from the land where he will be martyred.”
