“The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if small.” – Bukhari

40 Authentic Hadiths on Love for Allah and Moral Excellence

Written by: Abu Hamzah Abdul Khaliq Siddiqi

Translation:
All praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide; and whomever He misguides, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger.

✿ Hadith 1

Translation:
Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The best of deeds is to love for the sake of Allah and to hate for the sake of Allah.”
(Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Sunnah, Hadith No. 4599)

Explanation:
Love is a noble emotion when used rightly; otherwise, it becomes a source of corruption. People often love each other for beauty, personal interests, or worldly gain, but when goals differ, conflicts and hatred arise. Islam teaches that love and enmity should not be based on personal motives but purely for Allah’s sake. In this way, one upholds truth and justice, and society enjoys peace and harmony.

Remember: those whose friendship is founded on sin or rebellion against truth will become enemies on the Day of Judgment. But those who loved one another for Allah’s sake will remain companions in Paradise.

Allah Almighty said:
(Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:67)

Translation:
“Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to one another, except the righteous.”

✿ Hadith 2

Translation:
Anas رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“None of you truly believes until I become dearer to him than his father, his child, and all mankind.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 15, Sahih Muslim 70/44)

Explanation:
A believer’s strongest love must be for Allah.
Allah Almighty says:
(Al-Baqarah 2:165)
Translation: “Those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.”

Among creation, the Prophet ﷺ deserves our greatest love. There are two kinds of love:
Natural love — such as that between parents and children.
Rational love — when one chooses love through reason and faith.

Even if something seems difficult, a believer obeys the Prophet ﷺ knowing salvation lies in his guidance. One should prioritize his commands over all desires and relationships, making the Prophet’s pleasure supreme.

✿ Hadith 3

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“None of you truly believes until his desires conform to that which I have brought.”
(Sharh al-Sunnah 1/1212; Al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah: authentic)

Explanation:
True faith means following the Prophet ﷺ with full conviction and submission. Every act, gesture, and teaching of the Prophet should be embraced wholeheartedly. As the poet said:

“Draw that image of purity — where the command of Muhammad ﷺ is given, and the head bows in submission.”

✿ Hadith 4

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands other Muslims are safe; and the Muhājir is one who abandons what Allah has forbidden.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 10)

Explanation:
A perfect Muslim neither harms others with his words nor with his hands. He refrains from insults, backbiting, and slander, and avoids any action prohibited by Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

Allah Almighty says:
(Al-Ḥujurāt 49:11)

Translation:
“O believers! Let no people ridicule another people; perhaps they may be better than them. Nor let women ridicule other women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another nor call each other with offensive nicknames...”

This verse forbids mockery, defamation, and name-calling — all causes of discord and enmity. Whoever does not repent from such sins is indeed unjust to himself.

✿ Hadith 5

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Insulting a Muslim is wickedness, and fighting him is disbelief.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 48; Sahih Muslim 116/64)

Explanation:
This Hadith strongly forbids verbal abuse or violence against any Muslim, classifying it among major sins and denying the completeness of faith.

✿ Hadith 6

Translation:
Hudhayfah رضي الله عنه reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“A slanderer will not enter Paradise.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6056; Sahih Muslim 169/105)

Explanation:
A tale-bearer who carries gossip and sows discord among people will not be granted salvation, for his actions destroy unity and peace.

✿ Hadith 7

Translation:
Umm Kulthūm رضي الله عنها reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The one who reconciles between people and conveys good or says good is not a liar.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2692; Sahih Muslim 2605/101)

Explanation:
It is permissible to use kind or conciliatory words, even if not strictly factual, to reconcile people. Such speech intended for peace is praiseworthy, not sinful.

✿ Hadith 8

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“He who remains silent is saved.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 2501; Musnad Ahmad 5/259)

Explanation:
Silence here means refraining from useless or harmful talk. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Part of a man’s excellence in Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him.”
(Muwatta Malik, Hadith 3)

Meaning: avoid idle chatter; only speak when beneficial or necessary.

✿ Hadith 9

Translation:
Ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The believer is not one who insults, curses, speaks obscenely, or utters foul speech.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 1977)

Explanation:
A true believer does not taunt or curse others. Such behavior wounds hearts and reflects ignorance. Cursing distances one from Allah’s mercy, and if undeserved, it returns to the speaker himself.

✿ Hadith 10

Translation:
Anas رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“He will not enter Paradise whose neighbor is not safe from his mischief.”
(Sahih Muslim 73/46)

Explanation:
Neighbors’ rights are great in Islam. Angel Jibrīl continuously emphasized their importance to the Prophet ﷺ until he thought they might inherit. Those who harm their neighbors instead of honoring them face severe warning in this Hadith.

✿ Hadith 11

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنهما reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The one who reminds others of his charity, the disobedient to parents, and the habitual drunkard will not enter Paradise.”
(Sunan al-Nasa’i 2562; Sunan al-Darimi 2094)

Explanation:
A “mannān” (one who reminds others of favors) loses his reward, as Allah says:

(Al-Baqarah 2:264)

“Do not invalidate your charities with reminders and injury.”

The disobedient child (ʿāq) harms his parents and thus earns Hellfire, for they are his Paradise or Hell. Likewise, the one addicted to alcohol and dying unrepentant is denied entry until he faces due punishment.

✿ Hadith 12

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that none has the right to be worshiped except Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger; establishing prayer; giving zakat; performing Hajj; and fasting Ramadan.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 8; Sahih Muslim 45/21)

Explanation:
These five are the foundational pillars of Islam — its structure stands upon them. Yet just as a building remains incomplete without its roof, Islam reaches perfection when acts of worship are joined with righteous conduct, social justice, and moral dealings.

✿ Hadith 13

Translation:
Muʿādh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The keys to Paradise are the words: Lā ilāha illā Allāh.”
(Musnad Ahmad 5/242)

Explanation:
Wahb ibn Munabbih رحمه الله said: “Indeed, the statement ‘Lā ilāha illā Allāh’ is the key to Paradise, but every key has teeth; if you have the correct teeth, the door will open.”
(al-Bukhari 3/109; Mishkat al-Masabih 43)

These “teeth” symbolize righteous deeds — confirming the faith verbally, believing in the heart, and acting according to Islam’s commands.

✿ Hadith 14

Translation:
Jābir رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Between a servant and disbelief is the abandonment of prayer.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book of Faith, Hadith No. 82/34)

Explanation:
Prayer is a wall separating a Muslim from disbelief. When one performs it, he remains within the boundaries of Islam, but when he abandons it, he tears down that wall and enters into disbelief.

The Prophet ﷺ also said:
(Musnad Ahmad 3/389, Hadith No. 15183; Musannaf ʿAbd al-Razzaq, No. 5009)
“Abandoning prayer is shirk (association with Allah).”

Allah Almighty says:
(Surah Ar-Rum 30:31)

Translation:
“Turn in repentance to Him, fear Him, establish prayer, and do not be among the polytheists.”

✿ Hadith 15

Translation:
Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The most honorable among my Ummah are the carriers of the Qur’an and those who stand in prayer at night.”
(Shuʿab al-Īmān by al-Bayhaqī, 2/556, Hadith No. 3703)

Explanation:
Those who memorize and act upon the Qur’an are truly noble and honored in the sight of Allah. Merely memorizing without practice brings no benefit—such people resemble a donkey burdened with books. Likewise, those who consistently perform night prayers (Tahajjud) are also among the most honored servants of Allah.

✿ Hadith 16

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need for him to abandon his food and drink.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 1903)

Explanation:
Fasting is not merely refraining from food and drink, but from all sinful words and actions. If one continues lying, gossiping, or engaging in foul speech, his fast loses its spiritual value. True fasting requires abstaining from every sinful behavior along with physical restraint.

✿ Hadith 17

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The treasure of any one of you will come on the Day of Judgment as a bald serpent, from which its owner will flee, but it will pursue him until it bites his fingers.”
(Musnad Ahmad 2/530)

Explanation:
This refers to the wealth hoarded without paying zakat or earned through unlawful means. Such wealth will appear in the form of a snake that attacks its owner, symbolizing the punishment for neglecting Allah’s command of purification through charity.

✿ Hadith 18

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not engage in sexual relations or commit sin will return as free from sin as the day his mother gave birth to him.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1528; Sahih Muslim 1350/438)

Explanation:
Hajj must be performed purely for Allah’s sake—not for fame or status. The pilgrim must avoid lewd talk, arguments, and all sinful acts while in Ihram. A sincere Hajj wipes away all previous sins, renewing one’s soul completely.

✿ Hadith 19

Translation:
Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“One learned scholar is more severe upon Shayṭān than a thousand worshippers.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 2681; Sunan Ibn Mājah 222)

Explanation:
A scholar understands the traps of Shayṭān and exposes them to others, thus protecting many from deception. A mere worshipper may fall into Satan’s snare unknowingly, while a scholar combats him with knowledge and insight.

✿ Hadith 20

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Argumentation about the Qur’an is disbelief.”
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4603; Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ 236 – graded ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī)

Explanation:
To argue about the Qur’an means to deny one verse by using another or to claim contradiction within it. The believer must instead seek harmony between verses. For example, one verse states:

(An-Nisāʾ 4:78)
“Say: All is from Allah.”

While another says:
(An-Nisāʾ 4:79)
“Whatever good befalls you is from Allah, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself.”

The meaning: Allah is the Creator of both good and evil, but man is responsible for his choices.

Allah Almighty says:
(An-Nisāʾ 4:82)

Translation:
“Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.”

✿ Hadith 21

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever does not ask Allah, He becomes angry with him.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 3373)

Explanation:
Allah loves those who supplicate to Him and dislikes those who refrain from asking, as it reflects arrogance.

Allah Almighty says:
(Ghāfir 40:60)

Translation:
“Your Lord says: ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell humiliated.’”

✿ Hadith 22

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”
(Sahih Muslim 6543)

Explanation:
Deeds performed sincerely for Allah alone earn reward.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
(Sahih al-Bukhari 123; Sahih Muslim 1904)
“He who fights so that the word of Allah is supreme, he is the one fighting in Allah’s cause.”

Allah Almighty says:
(Az-Zumar 39:11)
“Say: I have been commanded to worship Allah sincerely in religion.”

And the Prophet ﷺ said:
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1; Sahih Muslim 1907)
“Actions are judged by intentions. Every person will be rewarded according to his intention.”

Hence, sincerity is the foundation of every righteous deed. Imām al-Bayhaqī رحمه الله said:
“Learn sincerity of intention, for it is greater than the act itself.”
(Fatḥ al-Bārī, under Hadith No. 1)

✿ Hadith 23

Translation:
Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The body nourished with unlawful (ḥarām) food shall not enter Paradise.”
(Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ, Hadith No. 2787)

Explanation:
No matter how pious one appears, if his sustenance is unlawful, he will not enter Paradise alongside the successful believers. Halal earnings are essential for accepted deeds.

✿ Hadith 24

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When a person dies, all his deeds end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
(Sahih Muslim 4223)

Explanation:
Three deeds continue to benefit a person after death:
Continuous charity – such as building a mosque, school, or water supply.
Beneficial knowledge – teaching or spreading Islamic knowledge.
Righteous offspring – who make duʿā for their parents.
These ensure one’s rewards continue even in the grave.

✿ Hadith 25

Translation:
Abu Saʿīd رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The truthful and trustworthy merchant will be with the Prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 1209; Sunan al-Dāraquṭnī 18)

Explanation:
A merchant who conducts business honestly and fairly will enjoy the companionship of the noblest ranks in Paradise, for trade, when conducted truthfully, becomes a form of worship.

✿ Hadith 26

Translation:
Jarīr ibn ʿAbdullāh رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah does not show mercy to one who does not show mercy to others.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 7376; Sahih Muslim 2319/44)

Explanation:
Those who seek Allah’s mercy must be merciful toward His creation. Another narration states: “All creation is Allah’s family; the most beloved to Allah are those who are kindest to His creation.”

Hadith 27

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“It is enough of a lie for a man to narrate everything he hears.”
(Sahih Muslim 40/40)

Explanation:
Spreading unverified information leads one into falsehood, even unintentionally. A believer must verify before sharing any report.

Allah Almighty says:
(Al-Ḥujurāt 49:6)

Translation:
“O believers! If a sinner brings you any news, verify it, lest you harm people out of ignorance and then regret what you have done.”

✿ Hadith 28

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book of Zuhd, Hadith 2956/1)

Explanation:
This world is a prison for the believer because he restrains himself from prohibited pleasures, endures hardships, and strives for the Hereafter. Even if a believer enjoys comfort, it is nothing compared to the delights of Paradise.
The disbeliever, however, finds this worldly life as his only paradise, indulging in its pleasures and desires, never wishing to depart from it.

✿ Hadith 29

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Cursed is the slave of the dinar and cursed is the slave of the dirham.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Book of Zuhd, Hadith 2357)

Explanation:
The “slave of dinar and dirham” refers to one who worships wealth — living solely for money, consumed by greed and worldly gain. Such a person becomes a servant of materialism, distant from Allah, and guilty of hidden shirk.

✿ Hadith 30

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah has ninety-nine names, one less than a hundred. Whoever memorizes and acts upon them will enter Paradise. Allah is One and loves the odd numbers.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6410; Sahih Muslim 2776/4)

Explanation:
Allah should be invoked by His beautiful names, as Allah says:
(Al-Aʿrāf 7:180)
“And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them.”

This does not mean that Allah has only ninety-nine names. He has many more, known only to Him. As mentioned in the famous supplication:
I ask You by every Name that You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept hidden with You in the unseen.
(Imām al-Nawawī reported that scholars agreed Allah has a thousand names.)

✿ Hadith 31

Translation:
“The Prophet ﷺ used to remember Allah at all times.”
(Sahih Muslim 826)

Explanation:
Frequent remembrance of Allah is commanded:
(Al-Aḥzāb 33:41)
“O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance.”

True peace of heart lies in His remembrance:
(Ar-Raʿd 13:28)
“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find tranquility.”

✿ Hadith 32

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنهما reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The whole world is a provision, and the best provision of the world is a righteous woman.”
(Sahih Muslim 1467/64)

Explanation:
All worldly benefits are temporary, but among them, the best is a pious wife — one who supports her husband in faith, avoids temptation, and helps him prepare for the Hereafter.

✿ Hadith 33

Translation:
Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Any woman who dies while her husband is pleased with her will enter Paradise.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 1161)

Explanation:
A wife’s effort to keep her righteous husband pleased is a means to Paradise. However, the condition applies to a pious, just husband — not to a sinful or oppressive one.

✿ Hadith 34

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah sends blessings upon him ten times.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 485; Sunan Abī Dāwūd 1369)

Explanation:
The Prophet ﷺ is honored in the heavens and on earth. Allah and His angels send blessings upon him, and believers are commanded to do the same:
(Al-Aḥzāb 33:56)
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe! Send blessings and salutations upon him.”

✿ Hadith 35

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The pleasure of the Lord lies in the pleasure of the father, and the anger of the Lord lies in the anger of the father.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 1899; Ṣaḥīḥah 516)

Explanation:
Pleasing one’s parents is among the greatest of duties. Allah repeatedly commands kindness toward them:
(An-Nisāʾ 4:36)
“Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, and be kind to your parents…”

✿ Hadith 36

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Remember often the destroyer of pleasures — death.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 2307; Sunan an-Nasāʾī 1823; Sunan Ibn Mājah 4258)

Explanation:
Frequent remembrance of death softens the heart, removes heedlessness, and turns one away from worldly obsession, directing him toward obedience and simplicity in life.

✿ Hadith 37

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“He is not one of us who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes, or calls out with the cries of ignorance (at the time of calamity).”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1297)

Explanation:
Acts of mourning such as striking oneself, tearing garments, and wailing are prohibited. Unfortunately, these customs are still practiced in some communities and are falsely considered honorable. In reality, they are sinful acts of ignorance condemned in Islam.

✿ Hadith 38

Translation:
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنهما reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Indeed, the best among you are those with the best character.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2559; Sahih Muslim 2321/68)

Explanation:
The best Muslims are those who combine devotion to Allah with good manners toward people — displaying humility, gentleness, modesty, and cheerful conduct.

✿ Hadith 39

Translation:
Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Indeed, Allah accepts the repentance of a servant as long as his soul has not reached his throat.”
(Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 353; Sunan Ibn Mājah 4253)

Explanation:
Repentance is accepted until the final moments before death, but once the signs of death appear and the soul begins to depart, repentance is no longer accepted.

✿ Hadith 40

Translation:
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever adheres to my Sunnah during the time of corruption in my Ummah will have the reward of one hundred martyrs.”
(Mirqāt al-Mafātīḥ 1/206; Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ 176; al-Bayhaqī, Kitāb al-Zuhd)

Explanation:
When the Ummah becomes corrupted, holding firmly to the Sunnah requires immense effort and patience — like striving in Allah’s path. Therefore, such perseverance earns the reward of a hundred martyrs.

May Allah send His peace and blessings upon His best creation, Muhammad ﷺ, his family, and his companions.
