إن الحمد لله نحمده، ونستعينه، من يهده الله فلا مضل له، ومن يضلل فلا هادي له، وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، وأن محمداً عبده ورسوله. أما بعد:
All praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help and His forgiveness. Whomever Allah guides, none can mislead; and whomever He allows to go astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without any partner, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and messenger.
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةَ وَالدَّمَ وَلَحْمَ الْخِنزِيرِ وَمَا أُهِلَّ بِهِ لِغَيْرِ اللَّهِ ۖ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ بَاغٍ وَلَا عَادٍ فَلَا إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ﴿١٧٣﴾﴾
(Al-Baqarah: 173)
Translation:
“Allah has only forbidden to you carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is compelled by necessity, neither desiring it nor transgressing its limits, there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”
عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا يُورِدَنَّ مُمْرِضٌ عَلَى مُصِحٍّ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5771
Translation:
Hazrat Abu Salamah رضي الله عنه narrated that he heard Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Do not let a sick camel be brought among healthy ones.”
وَعَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: كَانَ فِي وَفْدِ ثَقِيفٍ رَجُلٌ مَجْذُومٌ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: ارْجِعْ فَقَدْ بَايَعْنَاكَ.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Salām, Hadith No. 3544
Translation:
Hazrat ʿAmr bin Shuraid narrated from his father that among the delegation of Thaqīf there was a man afflicted with leprosy. The Prophet ﷺ sent word to him:
“Go back, for we have already accepted your pledge of allegiance.”
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا عَدْوَى وَلَا طِيَرَةَ وَلَا هَامَةَ وَلَا صَفَرَ، وَفِرَّ مِنَ الْمَجْذُومِ كَمَا تَفِرُّ مِنَ الْأَسَدِ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5707
Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no contagious disease (without Allah’s will), no evil omen, no superstition of owls, and no bad luck in the month of Ṣafar. However, flee from a leper as you would flee from a lion.”
عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: إِذَا شَرِبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَتَنَفَّسْ فِي الْإِنَاءِ، وَإِذَا بَالَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَمْسَحْ ذَكَرَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ، وَإِذَا تَمَسَّحَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَتَمَسَّحْ بِيَمِينِهِ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5630
Translation:
Hazrat Abu Qatādah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When any of you drinks, he should not breathe into the vessel; when he urinates, he should not touch his private part with his right hand; and when he cleans himself, he should not do so with his right hand.”
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الشُّرْبِ مِنْ فَمِ الْقِرْبَةِ أَوِ السِّقَاءِ، وَأَنْ يَمْنَعَ جَارَهُ أَنْ يَغْرِزَ خَشَبَهُ فِي دَارِهِ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith Nos. 5627, 5630
Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade drinking directly from the mouth of a water-skin or a large container, and forbade a person from preventing his neighbor from placing a peg in his wall.
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا عَطَسَ غَطَّى وَجْهَهُ بِيَدِهِ أَوْ بِثَوْبِهِ وَغَضَّ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ.
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Adab, Hadith No. 2745
Authenticated as ḥasan by Shaykh al-Albānī
Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said: When the Prophet ﷺ sneezed, he would cover his face with his hand or his garment and lower his voice.
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُطَّهِّرِينَ﴾
(At-Tawbah: 108)
Translation:
“And Allah loves those who keep themselves pure and clean.”
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ: إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ نَوْمِهِ فَلَا يَغْمِسْ يَدَهُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ حَتَّى يَغْسِلَهَا ثَلَاثًا، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي أَيْنَ بَاتَتْ يَدُهُ.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṭahārah, Hadith No. 643
Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“When one of you wakes up from his sleep, he should not dip his hand into a vessel until he has washed it three times, for he does not know where his hand has been during the night.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿أَمَّن يُجِيبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوءَ وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ خُلَفَاءَ الْأَرْضِ ۗ أَإِلَٰهٌ مَّعَ اللَّهِ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿٦٢﴾﴾
(An-Naml: 62)
Translation:
“Is He [not better] who answers the desperate one when he calls upon Him, removes evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there any deity with Allah? Little do you remember.”
عَنْ سَلْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا يَرُدُّ الْقَضَاءَ إِلَّا الدُّعَاءُ، وَلَا يَزِيدُ فِي الْعُمُرِ إِلَّا الْبِرُّ.
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Hadith No. 2139
Graded ḥasan by al-Albānī
Translation:
Hazrat Salman رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Nothing repels destiny except supplication (duʿāʾ), and nothing increases life span except righteousness.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿فَسَقَىٰ لَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَوَلَّىٰ إِلَى الظِّلِّ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ ﴿٢٤﴾﴾
(Al-Qaṣaṣ: 24)
Translation:
“So he watered (the flock) for them, then withdrew to the shade and said, ‘My Lord, truly I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.’”
وَقَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ ﴿٦٠﴾﴾
(Ghāfir: 60)
Translation:
“Your Lord has said: Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Surely those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell humiliated.”
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا يُغْنِي حَذَرٌ مِنْ قَدَرٍ، وَالدُّعَاءُ يَنْفَعُ مِمَّا نَزَلَ وَمِمَّا لَمْ يَنْزِلْ، وَإِنَّ الْبَلَاءَ لَيَنْزِلُ فَيَتَلَقَّاهُ الدُّعَاءُ فَيَعْتَلِجَانِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ.
Al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr of Ṭabarānī, Hadith No. 201
Translation:
Hazrat ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Caution cannot prevent destiny. Supplication benefits against what has descended and what has not yet descended. Calamity and supplication meet and struggle with each other until the Day of Resurrection.”
عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: مَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مُسْلِمٌ يَدْعُو اللَّهَ بِدَعْوَةٍ إِلَّا آتَاهُ اللَّهُ إِيَّاهَا أَوْ صَرَفَ عَنْهُ مِنَ السُّوءِ مِثْلَهَا مَا لَمْ يَدْعُ بِإِثْمٍ أَوْ قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ. فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: إِذًا نُكْثِرُ، قَالَ: اللَّهُ أَكْثَرُ.
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Daʿawāt, Hadith No. 3573
Graded ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī
Translation:
Hazrat ʿUbādah bin al-Ṣāmit رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no Muslim on earth who supplicates to Allah with a prayer—except that Allah grants it to him, or averts from him an equivalent evil—so long as he does not supplicate for sin or severing family ties.”
A man said, “Then we will make many supplications.”
He ﷺ replied: “Allah is even more abundant in response.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ ﴿٨٠﴾﴾
(Ash-Shuʿarāʾ: 80)
Translation:
“And when I fall ill, it is He who heals me.”
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُعَوِّذُ بَعْضَ أَهْلِهِ يَمْسَحُ بِيَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَيَقُولُ: اللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ اشْفِهِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5743
Translation:
Hazrat ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would seek protection for some of his family, wiping over them with his right hand and saying:
“O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and cure (him/her), for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing—a healing that leaves no illness behind.”
عَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَقُولُ فِي صَبَاحِ كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَمَسَاءِ كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ: بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، إِلَّا لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْءٌ.
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Daʿawāt, Hadith No. 3388; al-Mustadrak lil-Ḥākim 1/514
Imām al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ; al-Ḥākim graded it ṣaḥīḥ.
Translation:
Abān bin ʿUthmān said: I heard ʿUthmān bin ʿAffān رضي الله عنه say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no servant who says, every morning and every evening, three times: بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ — ‘In the Name of Allah, with Whose Name nothing in the earth or in the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing’ — except that nothing will harm him.”
(Abān had paralysis on one side. When a listener looked at him, Abān said: “Why do you look at me? The ḥadīth is as I narrated it; but on the day I was afflicted, I had not recited this supplication, and Allah’s decree took effect upon me.”)
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿فَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَقَالُوا مَنْ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً ۖ أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَهُمْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً ۖ وَكَانُوا بِآيَاتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ ﴿١٥﴾ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِي أَيَّامٍ نَّحِسَاتٍ لِّنُذِيقَهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْيِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَخْزَىٰ ۖ وَهُمْ لَا يُنصَرُونَ ﴿١٦﴾﴾
(Fuṣṣilat: 15–16)
Translation:
“As for ʿĀd, they waxed arrogant in the land without right and said, ‘Who is mightier than us in strength?’ Did they not see that Allah who created them is mightier than them in strength? And they used to reject Our signs. So We sent upon them a screaming wind during ominous days, that We might make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more humiliating, and they will not be helped.”
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ جَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ، وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ، وَسُوءِ الْقَضَاءِ، وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 6616
Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Seek refuge in Allah from the severity of trials, being overtaken by wretchedness, an evil decree, and the gloating of enemies.”
فَائِدَہ (Benefit):
أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ جَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ، وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ، وَسُوءِ الْقَضَاءِ، وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ
Translation:
“I seek refuge in Allah from the severity of calamity, being overtaken by misery, an evil decree, and the rejoicing of enemies.”
عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُعَوِّذُ الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ وَيَقُولُ: إِنَّ أَبَاكُمَا كَانَ يُعَوِّذُ بِهَا إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith Nos. 6616, 3371
Translation:
Hazrat Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated: The Prophet ﷺ used to seek protection for al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusain, saying:
“Your forefather (Ibrāhīm عليه السلام) used to seek protection for Ismāʿīl and Isḥāq with these words: ‘I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and poisonous creature, and from every harmful eye.’”
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ: اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ، وَالْجُنُونِ، وَالْجُذَامِ، وَسَيِّئِ الْأَسْقَامِ.
Musnad Aḥmad 3/192; Sunan al-Nasā’ī 8/270, Hadith No. 1554; Mishkāt No. 2470
Authenticated by al-Albānī.
Translation:
Hazrat Anas رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ used to say:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from vitiligo (leucoderma), madness, leprosy, and evil diseases.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَيَجْعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ مَا يَكْرَهُونَ وَتَصِفُ أَلْسِنَتُهُمُ الْكَذِبَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ الْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ النَّارَ وَأَنَّهُمْ مُفْرَطُونَ ﴿٦٢﴾﴾
(An-Naḥl: 62)
Translation:
“They attribute to Allah what they themselves dislike, and their tongues assert the lie that the best will be theirs. Undoubtedly, the Fire is for them, and they will be brought forward to it.”
عَنْ خَوْلَةَ بِنْتِ حَكِيمٍ السُّلَمِيَّةِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا تَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ نَزَلَ مَنْزِلًا ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ، لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْءٌ حَتَّى يَرْتَحِلَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ ذَاكَ.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Dhikr, Hadith No. 2708/54
Translation:
Hazrat Khawlah bint Ḥakīm al-Sulamiyyah رضي الله عنها said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Whoever stops at a place and then says, ‘I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He created,’ nothing will harm him until he departs from that place.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۚ كُلٌّ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّن رُّسُلِهِ ۚ وَقَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ ﴿٢٨٥﴾ لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِن نَّسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ أَنتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ ﴿٢٨٦﴾﴾
(Al-Baqarah: 285–286)
Translation:
“The Messenger has believed in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers, [saying], ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey. [Grant] Your forgiveness, our Lord; and to You is the destination.’ Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what it has earned, and it will bear [the consequence of] what it has acquired. ‘Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, and do not lay upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear. Pardon us; forgive us; and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.’”
عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا جِبْرِيلُ قَاعِدٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ سَمِعَ نَقِيضًا مِنْ فَوْقِهِ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ: هَذَا بَابٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فُتِحَ الْيَوْمَ، لَمْ يُفْتَحْ قَطُّ إِلَّا الْيَوْمَ. فَنَزَلَ مِنْهُ مَلَكٌ فَقَالَ: هَذَا مَلَكٌ نَزَلَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ، لَمْ يَنْزِلْ قَطُّ إِلَّا الْيَوْمَ. فَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ: أَبْشِرْ بِنُورَيْنِ أُوتِيتَهُمَا لَمْ يُؤْتَهُمَا نَبِيٌّ قَبْلَكَ: فَاتِحَةُ الْكِتَابِ، وَخَوَاتِيمُ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ، لَنْ تَقْرَأَ بِحَرْفٍ مِنْهُمَا إِلَّا أُعْطِيتَهُ.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb Faḍāʾil al-Qurʾān, Hadith No. 1877
Translation:
Hazrat Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated: While Jibrīl was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, he heard a creaking sound from above. He raised his head and said, “This is a gate in the heaven opened today, which has never been opened before.” Then an angel descended and said, “This is an angel who has descended to the earth; he has never descended before today.” He greeted and said, “Receive the glad tidings of two lights given to you that were not given to any prophet before you: Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and the last verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah. You will not recite a single letter of them except that you will be granted it.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿٢﴾ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴿٣﴾ مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ﴿٤﴾ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴿٥﴾ اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ﴿٦﴾ صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ ﴿٧﴾﴾
(Al-Fātiḥah: 1–7)
Translation:
“All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path—the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger, nor of those who are astray.”
عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ نَفَرًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مَرُّوا بِمَاءٍ فِيهِمْ لَدِيغٌ أَوْ سَلِيمٌ، فَعَرَضَ لَهُمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ: هَلْ فِيكُمْ مِنْ رَاقٍ؟ إِنَّ فِي الْمَاءِ رَجُلًا لَدِيغًا أَوْ سَلِيمًا. فَانْطَلَقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَرَأَ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ عَلَى شَاءٍ فَبَرَأَ، فَجَاءَ بِالشَّاءِ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَكَرِهُوا ذَلِكَ وَقَالُوا: أَخَذْتَ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللهِ أَجْرًا؟ حَتَّى قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَخَذَ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللهِ أَجْرًا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ أَحَقَّ مَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا كِتَابُ اللهِ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ṭibb, Hadith No. 5737
Translation:
Hazrat ʿAbdullāh bin ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما reported: A group of the Prophet’s companions passed by a settlement where a man had been stung (by a scorpion or similar). A man from that settlement asked, “Is there any healer among you? Indeed, there is a stung man here.” One of them went and recited Sūrat al-Fātiḥah for a flock of sheep as a fee, and the man was cured. He brought the sheep to his companions, but they disliked it and said, “You have taken wages for the Book of Allah?” When they came to Madīnah, they said, “O Messenger of Allah, he took a wage for reciting the Book of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The most deserving thing for which you take a wage is the Book of Allah.”
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خُبَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا فِي لَيْلَةٍ مَطِيرَةٍ وَظُلْمَةٍ شَدِيدَةٍ نَطْلُبُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَنَا، قَالَ: فَأَدْرَكْتُهُ، قَالَ: قُلْ. فَلَمْ أَقُلْ شَيْئًا. ثُمَّ قَالَ: قُلْ. فَلَمْ أَقُلْ شَيْئًا. قَالَ: قُلْ. فَقُلْتُ: مَا أَقُولُ؟ قَالَ: قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ وَالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ حِينَ تُمْسِي وَتُصْبِحُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، تَكْفِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ.
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Daʿawāt, Hadith No. 3575
Graded ḥasan by al-Albānī.
Translation:
Hazrat ʿAbdullāh bin Khubayb رضي الله عنه said: We went out on a very dark, rainy night searching for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead us in prayer. I found him, and he said, “Say.” I did not say anything. Then he said, “Say.” I did not say anything. He said, “Say.” I said, “What should I say?” He said:
“Recite Qul Huwa Allāhu Aḥad (Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ) and al-Muʿawwidhatayn (Sūrat al-Falaq and Sūrat al-Nās) three times in the evening and the morning; they will suffice you against everything.”
فَائِدَہ (Benefit): For readers’ benefit, the three sūrahs are mentioned below.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ﴾
(Al-Ikhlāṣ: 1–4)
Translation:
“Say: He is Allah, One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him.”
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
﴿قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ ﴿١﴾ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ﴿٢﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ ﴿٣﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ ﴿٤﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ﴿٥﴾﴾
(Al-Falaq: 1–5)
Translation:
“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of the darkening night when it settles, and from the evil of those who blow on knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.”
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
﴿قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ﴿١﴾ مَلِكِ النَّاسِ ﴿٢﴾ إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ ﴿٣﴾ مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ ﴿٤﴾ الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ ﴿٥﴾ مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ ﴿٦﴾﴾
(An-Nās: 1–6)
Translation:
“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the lurking whisperer who whispers in the hearts of mankind, from among jinn and mankind.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَذَا النُّونِ إِذْ ذَّهَبَ مُغَاضِبًا فَظَنَّ أَنْ لَنْ نَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ ﴿٨٧﴾ فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُنْجِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿٨٨﴾﴾
(Al-Anbiyāʾ: 87–88)
Translation:
“And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree upon him. Then he called out within the darknesses: ‘There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.’ So We responded to him and saved him from distress. Thus do We save the believers.”
عَنْ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: دَعْوَةُ ذِي النُّونِ إِذْ دَعَا وَهُوَ فِي بَطْنِ الْحُوتِ: لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَدْعُ بِهَا رَجُلٌ مُسْلِمٌ فِي شَيْءٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا اسْتَجَابَ اللهُ لَهُ.

Translation:
Hazrat Saʿd رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The supplication of Dhun-Nūn (Yūnus) when he prayed while in the belly of the fish was: ‘There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.’ No Muslim ever supplicates to Allah with it concerning anything except that Allah responds to him.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ ﴿٢٠١﴾﴾
(Al-Baqarah: 201)
Translation:
“Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
وَعَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ثُمَّ بَكَى، فَقَالَ: قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَامَ الْأَوَّلِ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ثُمَّ بَكَى فَقَالَ: اسْأَلُوا اللهَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ، فَإِنَّ أَحَدًا لَمْ يُعْطَ بَعْدَ الْيَقِينِ خَيْرًا مِنَ الْعَافِيَةِ.
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Daʿawāt, Hadith No. 3558
Graded ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī.
Translation:
Hazrat Rifāʿah bin Rāfiʿ al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه said: Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه ascended the pulpit and wept, then said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit in the first year (after Hijrah), wept, and said: ‘Ask Allah for pardon and wellbeing (ʿafw and ʿāfiyah), for no one has been given anything better after certainty (īmān/yaqīn) than wellbeing.’”
وَعَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ: لَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدَعُ هَؤُلَاءِ الدَّعَوَاتِ حِينَ يُمْسِي وَحِينَ يُصْبِحُ: اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي، اللّٰهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي، وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي، اللّٰهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي، وَمِنْ فَوْقِي، وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي.
Sunan Ibn Mājah, Kitāb al-Istiʿādhah, Hadith No. 5531

Translation:
Hazrat Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما used to say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not omit these supplications in the evening and morning:
“O Allah, I ask You for wellbeing in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and wellbeing in my religious and worldly affairs, and for my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and grant me security from my anxieties. O Allah, guard me from in front of me, from behind me, on my right and on my left, and from above me; and I seek refuge in Your Majesty from being taken unawares from beneath me.”
وَعَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كُنْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا فَقَالَ: يَا غُلَامُ إِنِّي أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ: احْفَظِ اللهَ يَحْفَظْكَ، احْفَظِ اللهَ تَجِدْهُ تُجَاهَكَ، إِذَا سَأَلْتَ فَاسْأَلِ اللهَ، وَإِذَا اسْتَعَنْتَ فَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللهِ، وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ الأُمَّةَ لَوِ اجْتَمَعَتْ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْفَعُوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَنْفَعُوكَ إِلَّا بِشَيْءٍ قَدْ كَتَبَهُ اللهُ لَكَ، وَلَوِ اجْتَمَعُوا عَلَى أَنْ يَضُرُّوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَضُرُّوكَ إِلَّا بِشَيْءٍ قَدْ كَتَبَهُ اللهُ عَلَيْكَ، رُفِعَتِ الأَقْلَامُ وَجَفَّتِ الصُّحُفُ.
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb Ṣifat al-Qiyāmah wal-Raqāʾiq wal-Waraʿ, Hadith No. 2516

Translation:
Hazrat ʿAbdullāh bin ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما said: I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day when he said:
“O boy, I am teaching you some words: Guard the commandments of Allah, He will guard you. Guard the commandments of Allah, you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah; when you seek help, seek help from Allah. Know that if the entire nation were to gather to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you except with what Allah has written for you; and if they were to gather to harm you with something, they would not harm you except with what Allah has written against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”
وَعَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: عَلَيْكُمْ بِقِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ، فَإِنَّهُ دَأْبُ الصَّالِحِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ، وَإِنَّ قِيَامَ اللَّيْلِ قُرْبَةٌ إِلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى، وَمَنْهَاةٌ عَنِ الإِثْمِ، وَتَكْفِيرٌ لِلسَّيِّئَاتِ، وَمَطْرَدَةٌ لِلدَّاءِ عَنِ الْجَسَدِ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abū Umāmah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Adhere to night prayer, for it was the practice of the righteous before you; indeed, night prayer is a means of nearness to Allah, a deterrent from sin, an expiation for misdeeds, and a repellent of illness from the body.”
وَعَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا ذَهَبَ ثُلُثَا اللَّيْلِ قَامَ فَقَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اذْكُرُوا اللهَ، اذْكُرُوا اللهَ، جَاءَتِ الرَّاجِفَةُ تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ، جَاءَ الْمَوْتُ بِمَا فِيهِ، جَاءَ الْمَوْتُ بِمَا فِيهِ. قَالَ أُبَيٌّ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي أُكْثِرُ الصَّلَاةَ عَلَيْكَ، فَكَمْ أَجْعَلُ لَكَ مِنْ صَلَاتِي؟ فَقَالَ: مَا شِئْتَ. قُلْتُ: الرُّبُعَ؟ قَالَ: مَا شِئْتَ، فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ. قُلْتُ: النِّصْفَ؟ قَالَ: مَا شِئْتَ، فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ. قُلْتُ: فَالثُّلُثَيْنِ؟ قَالَ: مَا شِئْتَ، فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ. قُلْتُ: أَجْعَلُ لَكَ صَلَاتِي كُلَّهَا؟ قَالَ: إِذًا تُكْفَى هَمَّكَ وَيُغْفَرُ لَكَ ذَنْبُكَ.

Translation:
Hazrat Ubayy bin Kaʿb رضي الله عنه said: When two-thirds of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would rise and say: “O people, remember Allah, remember Allah. The convulsion has come, followed by the subsequent one. Death has come with what it contains; death has come with what it contains.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I send abundant blessings upon you. How much of my supplication should I devote to sending blessings upon you?” He replied, “As much as you wish.” I said, “A quarter?” He said, “As you wish; if you increase, it is better for you.” I said, “Half?” He said, “As you wish; if you increase, it is better for you.” I said, “Two-thirds?” He said, “As you wish; if you increase, it is better for you.” I said, “Shall I devote all of my supplication to you?” He said, “Then your concerns will be taken care of and your sin will be forgiven.”
فَائِدَہ (Benefit):
حافظ ابن حجر رحمه الله:
«مِنْ أَعْظَمِ الأَشْيَاءِ الدَّافِعَةِ لِلطَّاعُونِ وَغَيْرِهِ مِنَ الْبَلَايَا الْعِظَامِ كَثْرَةُ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ.»
(Badhl al-Māʿūn, p. 333)
Translation:
“Among the greatest means of repelling plague and other major calamities is frequently sending ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِينَ﴾
(At-Tawbah: 14)
Translation:
“And [that He may] heal the breasts of a believing people.”
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: مَا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ دَاءً إِلَّا أَنْزَلَ لَهُ شِفَاءً.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5678
Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah has not sent down any disease except that He also sent down its cure.”
وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ إِذَا اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَقَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ، قَالَ: بِسْمِ اللهِ يُبْرِيكَ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ يَشْفِيكَ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ، وَشَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي عَيْنٍ.
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Salām, Hadith No. 5699
Translation:
From ʿĀ’ishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, رضي الله عنها: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill, Jibrīl would perform ruqyah for him, saying:
“In the Name of Allah, may He cure you; from every disease may He heal you; from the evil of a jealous one when he envies, and from the evil of every (harmful) eye.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿يُنْبِتُ لَكُمْ بِهِ الزَّرْعَ وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالنَّخِيلَ وَالْأَعْنَابَ وَمِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ﴿١١﴾﴾
(An-Naḥl: 11)
وَقَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ ﴿١﴾﴾
(At-Tīn: 1)
Translation:
“He causes to grow for you thereby crops, olives, date-palms, grapes, and of all the fruits. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.”
“And [by] the fig and the olive.”
وَعَنْ أَبِي أُسَيْدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: كُلُوا مِنَ الزَّيْتِ وَادَّهِنُوا بِهِ، فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abū Usayd رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Eat from (olive) oil and apply it (to your body), for it is from a blessed tree.”
وَعَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا وَمَعَنَا غَالِبُ بْنُ أَبْجَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَمَرِضَ فِي الطَّرِيقِ، فَقَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُوَ مَرِيضٌ، فَعَادَهُ ابْنُ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَقَالَ لَنَا: عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذِهِ الْحَبَّةِ السَّوْدَاءِ، فَخُذُوا مِنْهَا خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا، فَاسْحَقُوهَا، ثُمَّ اقْطُرُوهَا فِي أَنْفِهِ بِقَطَرَاتِ زَيْتٍ فِي هَذَا الْجَانِبِ وَفِي هَذَا الْجَانِبِ، فَإِنَّ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا حَدَّثَتْنِي أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْحَبَّةَ السَّوْدَاءَ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلَّا مِنَ السَّامِ. قُلْتُ: وَمَا السَّامُ؟ قَالَ: الْمَوْتُ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5687
Translation:
Hazrat Khālid bin Saʿd رضي الله عنه narrated: We set out on a journey with Ghālib bin Abjar رضي الله عنه, and he fell ill on the way. When we arrived in Madīnah he was still ill. Ibn Abī ʿAtīq رضي الله عنه visited him and said to us: “You should use this black seed. Take five or seven seeds, crush them, then drop them into his nostrils with drops of oil—on this side and that side. For ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها told me that she heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘This black seed is a cure for every disease except al-sām.’ I asked: ‘What is al-sām?’ He said: ‘Death.’”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿ثُمَّ كُلِي مِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ فَاسْلُكِي سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًا ۚ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُهُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِلنَّاسِ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ﴿٦٩﴾﴾
(An-Naḥl: 69)
Translation:
“Then eat from every [kind of] fruit and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]. There emerges from their bellies a drink of varying colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.”
وَعَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَخِي يَشْتَكِي بَطْنَهُ. فَقَالَ: اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا. ثُمَّ أَتَى الثَّانِيَةَ فَقَالَ: اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا. ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ الثَّالِثَةَ فَقَالَ: اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا. ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ فَقَالَ: فَعَلْتُ. فَقَالَ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَكَذَبَ بَطْنُ أَخِيكَ، اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا. فَسَقَاهُ فَبَرَأَ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5684
Translation:
Hazrat Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه narrated: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “My brother has a stomach complaint.” He said, “Give him honey to drink.” He came a second time, and he said, “Give him honey to drink.” He came a third time, and he said, “Give him honey to drink.” Then the man came and said, “I have done so.” He said, “Allah has spoken the truth, and your brother’s stomach has lied. Give him honey to drink.” So he gave him honey, and he recovered.
وَعَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: مَنْ اصْطَبَحَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ تَمَرَاتٍ عَجْوَةً لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ سُمٌّ وَلَا سِحْرٌ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ. وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: سَبْعَ تَمَرَاتٍ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ṭibb, Hadith No. 5768
Translation:
Hazrat Saʿd bin Abī Waqqāṣ رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever eats ʿAjwah dates in the morning will not be harmed by poison or magic that day until night.” Another narrator said: “(Eat) seven dates.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ ﴿٨٣﴾﴾
(Al-Anbiyāʾ: 83)
Translation:
“And [mention] Ayyūb, when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’”
وَعَنْ أُمِّ قَيْسِ بِنْتِ مِحْصَنٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذَا الْعُودِ الْهِنْدِيِّ، فَإِنَّ فِيهِ سَبْعَةَ أَشْفِيَةٍ: يُسْتَعَطُ مِنَ الْعُذْرَةِ، وَيُلَدُّ بِهِ مِنْ ذَاتِ الْجَنْبِ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5692
Translation:
Hazrat Umm Qays bint Miḥṣan رضي الله عنها said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say:
“Use this Indian aloeswood (ʿūd hindī), for it contains seven cures: it is sniffed for throat affliction, and used (as a remedy) for pleurisy.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ قَالُوا هَٰذَا عَارِضٌ مُمْطِرُنَا ۚ بَلْ هُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُمْ بِهِ ۖ رِيحٌ فِيهَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ﴿٢٤﴾ تُدَمِّرُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ بِأَمْرِ رَبِّهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا لَا يُرَىٰ إِلَّا مَسَاكِنُهُمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْقَوْمَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ ﴿٢٥﴾﴾
(Al-Aḥqāf: 24–25)
Translation:
“When they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, ‘This is a cloud bringing us rain.’ Rather, it is that (torment) which you sought to hasten: a wind wherein is a painful punishment, destroying everything by command of its Lord. Then they became such that nothing could be seen except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.”
وَعَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ احْتَكَرَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ طَعَامَهُمْ ضَرَبَهُ اللهُ بِالْجُذَامِ وَالْإِفْلَاسِ.
Sunan Ibn Mājah, Hadith No. 2155; Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ No. 2895
Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar graded it ḥasan; Fatḥ al-Bārī 4/348.
Translation:
Hazrat ʿUmar bin al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Whoever hoards the Muslims’ food (to raise prices), Allah afflicts him with leprosy and poverty.”
وَعَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ اللهَ لَيُمْلِي لِلظَّالِمِ حَتَّى إِذَا أَخَذَهُ لَمْ يُفْلِتْهُ. قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَرَأَ: ﴿وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَخْذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَا أَخَذَ الْقُرَىٰ وَهِيَ ظَالِمَةٌ ۚ إِنَّ أَخْذَهُ أَلِيمٌ شَدِيدٌ ﴾ (هود: 102).
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 4686
Translation:
Hazrat Abū Mūsā رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, Allah gives respite to the oppressor, but when He seizes him, He does not let him escape.” Then he recited: “Such is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.” (Hūd: 102)
وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا أَخْبَرَتْ أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الطَّاعُونِ، فَأَخْبَرَهَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ عَذَابًا يَبْعَثُهُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ، فَجَعَلَهُ اللهُ رَحْمَةً لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ؛ فَلَيْسَ مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَقَعُ الطَّاعُونُ فَيَمْكُثُ فِي بَلَدِهِ صَابِرًا، يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لَنْ يُصِيبَهُ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ اللهُ لَهُ، إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ الشَّهِيدِ.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith No. 5734
Translation:
From ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها: She asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about plague. He informed her that it was a punishment which Allah used to send upon whom He willed, but Allah made it a mercy for the believers. Thus, there is no servant in whose land plague occurs and he remains there patiently, knowing that nothing will befall him except what Allah has written for him, except that he will have a reward like that of a martyr.
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: انْطَلَقَ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ حَتَّى أَوَوُا الْمَبِيتَ إِلَى غَارٍ، فَدَخَلُوهُ، فَانْحَدَرَتْ صَخْرَةٌ مِنَ الْجَبَلِ فَسَدَّتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْغَارَ... (الحديث بطوله)
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ijārah, Hadith No. 2272
Translation (concise):
Hazrat ʿAbdullāh bin ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrated: Three men from those before you took refuge in a cave; a rock fell and blocked its entrance. They said, “Nothing will save you except to supplicate to Allah by your righteous deeds.”
• The first mentioned honoring his elderly parents by serving them milk before anyone else.
• The second mentioned refraining from illicit relations at the decisive moment, purely for Allah’s sake, and leaving the wealth he had given.
• The third mentioned returning the full, multiplied wage to a laborer who had left without taking his pay.
With each supplication, the rock moved until they exited safely.
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقُلْ حَسْبِيَ اللهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ ﴿١٢٩﴾﴾
(At-Tawbah: 129)
Translation:
“But if they turn away, say, ‘Allah is sufficient for me; there is no deity except Him. In Him I have placed my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.’”
وَعَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ تَوَكَّلْتُمْ عَلَى اللهِ حَقَّ تَوَكُّلِهِ، لَرُزِقْتُمْ كَمَا تُرْزَقُ الطَّيْرُ، تَغْدُو خِمَاصًا وَتَرُوحُ بِطَانًا.
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Zuhd, Hadith No. 2344

Translation:
Hazrat ʿUmar bin al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If you relied upon Allah with true reliance, you would be provided for as the birds are: they leave in the morning hungry and return in the evening full.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَنْ تَشِيعَ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۚ وَاللهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ﴿١٩﴾﴾
(An-Nūr: 19)
Translation:
“Indeed, those who like that immorality should spread among the believers will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. Allah knows, while you do not know.”
وَعَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «فِي هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ خَسْفٌ وَمَسْخٌ وَقَذْفٌ»، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَمَتَى ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ: «إِذَا ظَهَرَتِ الْقَيَانُ وَالْمَعَازِفُ، وَشُرِبَتِ الْخُمُورُ».
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Fitan, Hadith No. 2212
Graded ḥasan by al-Albānī.
Translation:
Hazrat ʿImrān bin Ḥuṣayn رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“In this ummah there will be swallowing by the earth, transformation (of forms), and pelting (with stones).” A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, when will that be?” He said, “When singing women and musical instruments become prevalent, and intoxicants are consumed.”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللهِ﴾
(Āl ʿImrān: 110)
Translation:
“You are the best nation produced for mankind: you enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.”
وَعَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، لَتَأْمُرُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلَتَنْهَوُنَّ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ، أَوْ لَيُوشِكَنَّ اللهُ أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عِقَابًا مِنْهُ، ثُمَّ تَدْعُونَهُ فَلَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَكُمْ».
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Fitan, Hadith No. 2169

Translation:
Hazrat Ḥudhayfah bin al-Yamān رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you will certainly enjoin good and forbid evil, or else Allah will soon send upon you a punishment from Him; then you will supplicate to Him, but you will not be answered.”
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَادَ رَجُلًا مِنْ وَعْكٍ كَانَ بِهِ، فَقَالَ: «أَبْشِرْ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ يَقُولُ: هِيَ نَارِي أُسَلِّطُهَا عَلَى عَبْدِيَ الْمُؤْمِنِ لِتَكُونَ حَظَّهُ مِنَ النَّارِ».
al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah, Hadith No. 557
Translation:
Hazrat Abū Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ visited a man who had a fever and said:
“Receive the glad tidings, for Allah says: ‘It is My fire which I impose upon My believing servant so that it will be his share of the (Hell)fire.’”
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَنْ يُتْرَكُوا أَنْ يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ ﴿٢﴾ وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ ﴿٣﴾﴾
(Al-ʿAnkabūt: 2–3)
Translation:
“Do the people think that they will be left to say, ‘We believe,’ and they will not be tested? We certainly tested those before them, so Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.”
وَعَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «عِظَمُ الْجَزَاءِ مَعَ عِظَمِ الْبَلَاءِ، وَإِنَّ اللهَ إِذَا أَحَبَّ قَوْمًا ابْتَلَاهُمْ، فَمَنْ رَضِيَ فَلَهُ الرِّضَا، وَمَنْ سَخِطَ فَلَهُ السُّخْطُ».
Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Zuhd, Hadith No. 2396
Imām al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan gharīb.
Translation:
Hazrat Anas bin Mālik رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Great reward accompanies great trials. When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever is pleased (with Allah’s decree) will have (His) pleasure, and whoever is displeased will have (His) displeasure.”
وَصَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالَى عَلَى خَيْرِ خَلْقِهِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ
Translation:
“May Allah’s blessings be upon the best of His creation, Muhammad, and upon his family and all his companions.”

Praise and Introduction
إن الحمد لله نحمده، ونستعينه، من يهده الله فلا مضل له، ومن يضلل فلا هادي له، وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، وأن محمداً عبده ورسوله. أما بعد:
All praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help and His forgiveness. Whomever Allah guides, none can mislead; and whomever He allows to go astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without any partner, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and messenger.
Section One: Preventive Measures
A sick person should avoid mingling with healthy people
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةَ وَالدَّمَ وَلَحْمَ الْخِنزِيرِ وَمَا أُهِلَّ بِهِ لِغَيْرِ اللَّهِ ۖ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ بَاغٍ وَلَا عَادٍ فَلَا إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ﴿١٧٣﴾﴾

Translation:
“Allah has only forbidden to you carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is compelled by necessity, neither desiring it nor transgressing its limits, there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”
Hadith 1
عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا يُورِدَنَّ مُمْرِضٌ عَلَى مُصِحٍّ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abu Salamah رضي الله عنه narrated that he heard Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Do not let a sick camel be brought among healthy ones.”
A leper should keep away from healthy people
Hadith 2
وَعَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: كَانَ فِي وَفْدِ ثَقِيفٍ رَجُلٌ مَجْذُومٌ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: ارْجِعْ فَقَدْ بَايَعْنَاكَ.

Translation:
Hazrat ʿAmr bin Shuraid narrated from his father that among the delegation of Thaqīf there was a man afflicted with leprosy. The Prophet ﷺ sent word to him:
“Go back, for we have already accepted your pledge of allegiance.”
Healthy people should also avoid contact with lepers
Hadith 3
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا عَدْوَى وَلَا طِيَرَةَ وَلَا هَامَةَ وَلَا صَفَرَ، وَفِرَّ مِنَ الْمَجْذُومِ كَمَا تَفِرُّ مِنَ الْأَسَدِ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no contagious disease (without Allah’s will), no evil omen, no superstition of owls, and no bad luck in the month of Ṣafar. However, flee from a leper as you would flee from a lion.”
Do not breathe into the vessel while drinking
Hadith 4
عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: إِذَا شَرِبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَتَنَفَّسْ فِي الْإِنَاءِ، وَإِذَا بَالَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَمْسَحْ ذَكَرَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ، وَإِذَا تَمَسَّحَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَتَمَسَّحْ بِيَمِينِهِ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abu Qatādah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When any of you drinks, he should not breathe into the vessel; when he urinates, he should not touch his private part with his right hand; and when he cleans himself, he should not do so with his right hand.”
Do not drink directly from the mouth of a large water-skin
Hadith 5
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الشُّرْبِ مِنْ فَمِ الْقِرْبَةِ أَوِ السِّقَاءِ، وَأَنْ يَمْنَعَ جَارَهُ أَنْ يَغْرِزَ خَشَبَهُ فِي دَارِهِ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade drinking directly from the mouth of a water-skin or a large container, and forbade a person from preventing his neighbor from placing a peg in his wall.
Cover your mouth while sneezing
Hadith 6
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا عَطَسَ غَطَّى وَجْهَهُ بِيَدِهِ أَوْ بِثَوْبِهِ وَغَضَّ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ.


Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said: When the Prophet ﷺ sneezed, he would cover his face with his hand or his garment and lower his voice.
Maintain personal cleanliness and hygiene
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُطَّهِّرِينَ﴾

Translation:
“And Allah loves those who keep themselves pure and clean.”
Hadith 7
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ: إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ نَوْمِهِ فَلَا يَغْمِسْ يَدَهُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ حَتَّى يَغْسِلَهَا ثَلَاثًا، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي أَيْنَ بَاتَتْ يَدُهُ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“When one of you wakes up from his sleep, he should not dip his hand into a vessel until he has washed it three times, for he does not know where his hand has been during the night.”
Section Two: Supplication (Duʿāʾ)
Supplication can change destiny
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿أَمَّن يُجِيبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوءَ وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ خُلَفَاءَ الْأَرْضِ ۗ أَإِلَٰهٌ مَّعَ اللَّهِ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿٦٢﴾﴾

Translation:
“Is He [not better] who answers the desperate one when he calls upon Him, removes evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there any deity with Allah? Little do you remember.”
Hadith 8
عَنْ سَلْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا يَرُدُّ الْقَضَاءَ إِلَّا الدُّعَاءُ، وَلَا يَزِيدُ فِي الْعُمُرِ إِلَّا الْبِرُّ.


Translation:
Hazrat Salman رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Nothing repels destiny except supplication (duʿāʾ), and nothing increases life span except righteousness.”
Supplicate to Allah alone
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿فَسَقَىٰ لَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَوَلَّىٰ إِلَى الظِّلِّ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ ﴿٢٤﴾﴾

Translation:
“So he watered (the flock) for them, then withdrew to the shade and said, ‘My Lord, truly I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.’”
وَقَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ ﴿٦٠﴾﴾

Translation:
“Your Lord has said: Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Surely those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell humiliated.”
Hadith 9
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: لَا يُغْنِي حَذَرٌ مِنْ قَدَرٍ، وَالدُّعَاءُ يَنْفَعُ مِمَّا نَزَلَ وَمِمَّا لَمْ يَنْزِلْ، وَإِنَّ الْبَلَاءَ لَيَنْزِلُ فَيَتَلَقَّاهُ الدُّعَاءُ فَيَعْتَلِجَانِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ.

Translation:
Hazrat ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Caution cannot prevent destiny. Supplication benefits against what has descended and what has not yet descended. Calamity and supplication meet and struggle with each other until the Day of Resurrection.”
Hadith 10
عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: مَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مُسْلِمٌ يَدْعُو اللَّهَ بِدَعْوَةٍ إِلَّا آتَاهُ اللَّهُ إِيَّاهَا أَوْ صَرَفَ عَنْهُ مِنَ السُّوءِ مِثْلَهَا مَا لَمْ يَدْعُ بِإِثْمٍ أَوْ قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ. فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: إِذًا نُكْثِرُ، قَالَ: اللَّهُ أَكْثَرُ.


Translation:
Hazrat ʿUbādah bin al-Ṣāmit رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no Muslim on earth who supplicates to Allah with a prayer—except that Allah grants it to him, or averts from him an equivalent evil—so long as he does not supplicate for sin or severing family ties.”
A man said, “Then we will make many supplications.”
He ﷺ replied: “Allah is even more abundant in response.”
Seeking Healing (Shifāʾ)
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ ﴿٨٠﴾﴾

Translation:
“And when I fall ill, it is He who heals me.”
Hadith 11 — Duʿāʾ for Healing
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُعَوِّذُ بَعْضَ أَهْلِهِ يَمْسَحُ بِيَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَيَقُولُ: اللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ اشْفِهِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا.

Translation:
Hazrat ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would seek protection for some of his family, wiping over them with his right hand and saying:
“O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and cure (him/her), for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing—a healing that leaves no illness behind.”
Morning & Evening Protection from Harm
Hadith 12
عَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَقُولُ فِي صَبَاحِ كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَمَسَاءِ كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ: بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، إِلَّا لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْءٌ.


Translation:
Abān bin ʿUthmān said: I heard ʿUthmān bin ʿAffān رضي الله عنه say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no servant who says, every morning and every evening, three times: بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ — ‘In the Name of Allah, with Whose Name nothing in the earth or in the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing’ — except that nothing will harm him.”
(Abān had paralysis on one side. When a listener looked at him, Abān said: “Why do you look at me? The ḥadīth is as I narrated it; but on the day I was afflicted, I had not recited this supplication, and Allah’s decree took effect upon me.”)
Seek Refuge from Severe Trials
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿فَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَقَالُوا مَنْ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً ۖ أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَهُمْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً ۖ وَكَانُوا بِآيَاتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ ﴿١٥﴾ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِي أَيَّامٍ نَّحِسَاتٍ لِّنُذِيقَهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْيِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَخْزَىٰ ۖ وَهُمْ لَا يُنصَرُونَ ﴿١٦﴾﴾

Translation:
“As for ʿĀd, they waxed arrogant in the land without right and said, ‘Who is mightier than us in strength?’ Did they not see that Allah who created them is mightier than them in strength? And they used to reject Our signs. So We sent upon them a screaming wind during ominous days, that We might make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more humiliating, and they will not be helped.”
Hadith 13
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ جَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ، وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ، وَسُوءِ الْقَضَاءِ، وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Seek refuge in Allah from the severity of trials, being overtaken by wretchedness, an evil decree, and the gloating of enemies.”
فَائِدَہ (Benefit):
أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ جَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ، وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ، وَسُوءِ الْقَضَاءِ، وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ
Translation:
“I seek refuge in Allah from the severity of calamity, being overtaken by misery, an evil decree, and the rejoicing of enemies.”
Seek Refuge from Every Harmful (Envious) Eye
Hadith 14
عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُعَوِّذُ الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ وَيَقُولُ: إِنَّ أَبَاكُمَا كَانَ يُعَوِّذُ بِهَا إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ.

Translation:
Hazrat Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated: The Prophet ﷺ used to seek protection for al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusain, saying:
“Your forefather (Ibrāhīm عليه السلام) used to seek protection for Ismāʿīl and Isḥāq with these words: ‘I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and poisonous creature, and from every harmful eye.’”
Seek Refuge from All Serious Diseases
Hadith 15
عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ: اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ، وَالْجُنُونِ، وَالْجُذَامِ، وَسَيِّئِ الْأَسْقَامِ.


Translation:
Hazrat Anas رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ used to say:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from vitiligo (leucoderma), madness, leprosy, and evil diseases.”
Seek Refuge with Allah from Every Evil
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَيَجْعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ مَا يَكْرَهُونَ وَتَصِفُ أَلْسِنَتُهُمُ الْكَذِبَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ الْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ النَّارَ وَأَنَّهُمْ مُفْرَطُونَ ﴿٦٢﴾﴾

Translation:
“They attribute to Allah what they themselves dislike, and their tongues assert the lie that the best will be theirs. Undoubtedly, the Fire is for them, and they will be brought forward to it.”
Hadith 16
عَنْ خَوْلَةَ بِنْتِ حَكِيمٍ السُّلَمِيَّةِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا تَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ نَزَلَ مَنْزِلًا ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ، لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْءٌ حَتَّى يَرْتَحِلَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ ذَاكَ.

Translation:
Hazrat Khawlah bint Ḥakīm al-Sulamiyyah رضي الله عنها said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Whoever stops at a place and then says, ‘I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He created,’ nothing will harm him until he departs from that place.”
The Last Two Verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah Suffice in All Matters
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۚ كُلٌّ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّن رُّسُلِهِ ۚ وَقَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ ﴿٢٨٥﴾ لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِن نَّسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ أَنتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ ﴿٢٨٦﴾﴾

Translation:
“The Messenger has believed in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers, [saying], ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey. [Grant] Your forgiveness, our Lord; and to You is the destination.’ Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what it has earned, and it will bear [the consequence of] what it has acquired. ‘Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, and do not lay upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear. Pardon us; forgive us; and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.’”
Hadith 17
عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا جِبْرِيلُ قَاعِدٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ سَمِعَ نَقِيضًا مِنْ فَوْقِهِ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ: هَذَا بَابٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فُتِحَ الْيَوْمَ، لَمْ يُفْتَحْ قَطُّ إِلَّا الْيَوْمَ. فَنَزَلَ مِنْهُ مَلَكٌ فَقَالَ: هَذَا مَلَكٌ نَزَلَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ، لَمْ يَنْزِلْ قَطُّ إِلَّا الْيَوْمَ. فَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ: أَبْشِرْ بِنُورَيْنِ أُوتِيتَهُمَا لَمْ يُؤْتَهُمَا نَبِيٌّ قَبْلَكَ: فَاتِحَةُ الْكِتَابِ، وَخَوَاتِيمُ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ، لَنْ تَقْرَأَ بِحَرْفٍ مِنْهُمَا إِلَّا أُعْطِيتَهُ.

Translation:
Hazrat Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated: While Jibrīl was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, he heard a creaking sound from above. He raised his head and said, “This is a gate in the heaven opened today, which has never been opened before.” Then an angel descended and said, “This is an angel who has descended to the earth; he has never descended before today.” He greeted and said, “Receive the glad tidings of two lights given to you that were not given to any prophet before you: Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and the last verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah. You will not recite a single letter of them except that you will be granted it.”
Sūrat al-Fātiḥah as a Cure for Spiritual and Physical Ailments
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿٢﴾ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴿٣﴾ مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ﴿٤﴾ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴿٥﴾ اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ﴿٦﴾ صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ ﴿٧﴾﴾

Translation:
“All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path—the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger, nor of those who are astray.”
Hadith 18
عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ نَفَرًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مَرُّوا بِمَاءٍ فِيهِمْ لَدِيغٌ أَوْ سَلِيمٌ، فَعَرَضَ لَهُمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ: هَلْ فِيكُمْ مِنْ رَاقٍ؟ إِنَّ فِي الْمَاءِ رَجُلًا لَدِيغًا أَوْ سَلِيمًا. فَانْطَلَقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَرَأَ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ عَلَى شَاءٍ فَبَرَأَ، فَجَاءَ بِالشَّاءِ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَكَرِهُوا ذَلِكَ وَقَالُوا: أَخَذْتَ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللهِ أَجْرًا؟ حَتَّى قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَخَذَ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللهِ أَجْرًا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ أَحَقَّ مَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا كِتَابُ اللهِ.

Translation:
Hazrat ʿAbdullāh bin ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما reported: A group of the Prophet’s companions passed by a settlement where a man had been stung (by a scorpion or similar). A man from that settlement asked, “Is there any healer among you? Indeed, there is a stung man here.” One of them went and recited Sūrat al-Fātiḥah for a flock of sheep as a fee, and the man was cured. He brought the sheep to his companions, but they disliked it and said, “You have taken wages for the Book of Allah?” When they came to Madīnah, they said, “O Messenger of Allah, he took a wage for reciting the Book of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The most deserving thing for which you take a wage is the Book of Allah.”
A Sunnah Practice for Protection from Every Evil
Hadith 19
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خُبَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا فِي لَيْلَةٍ مَطِيرَةٍ وَظُلْمَةٍ شَدِيدَةٍ نَطْلُبُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي لَنَا، قَالَ: فَأَدْرَكْتُهُ، قَالَ: قُلْ. فَلَمْ أَقُلْ شَيْئًا. ثُمَّ قَالَ: قُلْ. فَلَمْ أَقُلْ شَيْئًا. قَالَ: قُلْ. فَقُلْتُ: مَا أَقُولُ؟ قَالَ: قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ وَالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ حِينَ تُمْسِي وَتُصْبِحُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، تَكْفِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ.


Translation:
Hazrat ʿAbdullāh bin Khubayb رضي الله عنه said: We went out on a very dark, rainy night searching for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead us in prayer. I found him, and he said, “Say.” I did not say anything. Then he said, “Say.” I did not say anything. He said, “Say.” I said, “What should I say?” He said:
“Recite Qul Huwa Allāhu Aḥad (Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ) and al-Muʿawwidhatayn (Sūrat al-Falaq and Sūrat al-Nās) three times in the evening and the morning; they will suffice you against everything.”
فَائِدَہ (Benefit): For readers’ benefit, the three sūrahs are mentioned below.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ﴾

Translation:
“Say: He is Allah, One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him.”
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
﴿قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ ﴿١﴾ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ﴿٢﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ ﴿٣﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ ﴿٤﴾ وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ﴿٥﴾﴾

Translation:
“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of the darkening night when it settles, and from the evil of those who blow on knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.”
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
﴿قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ﴿١﴾ مَلِكِ النَّاسِ ﴿٢﴾ إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ ﴿٣﴾ مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ ﴿٤﴾ الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ ﴿٥﴾ مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ ﴿٦﴾﴾

Translation:
“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the lurking whisperer who whispers in the hearts of mankind, from among jinn and mankind.”
The Supplication of Prophet Yūnus عليه السلام in Distress
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَذَا النُّونِ إِذْ ذَّهَبَ مُغَاضِبًا فَظَنَّ أَنْ لَنْ نَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ ﴿٨٧﴾ فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُنْجِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿٨٨﴾﴾

Translation:
“And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree upon him. Then he called out within the darknesses: ‘There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.’ So We responded to him and saved him from distress. Thus do We save the believers.”
Hadith 20
عَنْ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: دَعْوَةُ ذِي النُّونِ إِذْ دَعَا وَهُوَ فِي بَطْنِ الْحُوتِ: لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَدْعُ بِهَا رَجُلٌ مُسْلِمٌ فِي شَيْءٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا اسْتَجَابَ اللهُ لَهُ.


Translation:
Hazrat Saʿd رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The supplication of Dhun-Nūn (Yūnus) when he prayed while in the belly of the fish was: ‘There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.’ No Muslim ever supplicates to Allah with it concerning anything except that Allah responds to him.”
After Faith and Conviction, Wellbeing (ʿĀfiyah) is a Great Blessing
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ ﴿٢٠١﴾﴾

Translation:
“Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
Hadith 21
وَعَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ثُمَّ بَكَى، فَقَالَ: قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَامَ الْأَوَّلِ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ثُمَّ بَكَى فَقَالَ: اسْأَلُوا اللهَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ، فَإِنَّ أَحَدًا لَمْ يُعْطَ بَعْدَ الْيَقِينِ خَيْرًا مِنَ الْعَافِيَةِ.


Translation:
Hazrat Rifāʿah bin Rāfiʿ al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه said: Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه ascended the pulpit and wept, then said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit in the first year (after Hijrah), wept, and said: ‘Ask Allah for pardon and wellbeing (ʿafw and ʿāfiyah), for no one has been given anything better after certainty (īmān/yaqīn) than wellbeing.’”
Hadith 22
وَعَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ: لَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدَعُ هَؤُلَاءِ الدَّعَوَاتِ حِينَ يُمْسِي وَحِينَ يُصْبِحُ: اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي، اللّٰهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي، وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي، اللّٰهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي، وَمِنْ فَوْقِي، وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي.


Translation:
Hazrat Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما used to say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not omit these supplications in the evening and morning:
“O Allah, I ask You for wellbeing in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and wellbeing in my religious and worldly affairs, and for my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and grant me security from my anxieties. O Allah, guard me from in front of me, from behind me, on my right and on my left, and from above me; and I seek refuge in Your Majesty from being taken unawares from beneath me.”
Safeguard Allah’s Commands—Allah Will Safeguard You
Hadith 23
وَعَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كُنْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا فَقَالَ: يَا غُلَامُ إِنِّي أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ: احْفَظِ اللهَ يَحْفَظْكَ، احْفَظِ اللهَ تَجِدْهُ تُجَاهَكَ، إِذَا سَأَلْتَ فَاسْأَلِ اللهَ، وَإِذَا اسْتَعَنْتَ فَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللهِ، وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ الأُمَّةَ لَوِ اجْتَمَعَتْ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْفَعُوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَنْفَعُوكَ إِلَّا بِشَيْءٍ قَدْ كَتَبَهُ اللهُ لَكَ، وَلَوِ اجْتَمَعُوا عَلَى أَنْ يَضُرُّوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَضُرُّوكَ إِلَّا بِشَيْءٍ قَدْ كَتَبَهُ اللهُ عَلَيْكَ، رُفِعَتِ الأَقْلَامُ وَجَفَّتِ الصُّحُفُ.


Translation:
Hazrat ʿAbdullāh bin ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما said: I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day when he said:
“O boy, I am teaching you some words: Guard the commandments of Allah, He will guard you. Guard the commandments of Allah, you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah; when you seek help, seek help from Allah. Know that if the entire nation were to gather to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you except with what Allah has written for you; and if they were to gather to harm you with something, they would not harm you except with what Allah has written against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”
Night Prayer (Qiyām al-Layl) is a Means of Removing Illness
Hadith 24
وَعَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: عَلَيْكُمْ بِقِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ، فَإِنَّهُ دَأْبُ الصَّالِحِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ، وَإِنَّ قِيَامَ اللَّيْلِ قُرْبَةٌ إِلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى، وَمَنْهَاةٌ عَنِ الإِثْمِ، وَتَكْفِيرٌ لِلسَّيِّئَاتِ، وَمَطْرَدَةٌ لِلدَّاءِ عَنِ الْجَسَدِ.


Translation:
Hazrat Abū Umāmah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Adhere to night prayer, for it was the practice of the righteous before you; indeed, night prayer is a means of nearness to Allah, a deterrent from sin, an expiation for misdeeds, and a repellent of illness from the body.”
Sending Ṣalāh (Durūd) upon the Prophet ﷺ as a Cause for the Removal of Calamity
Hadith 25
وَعَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا ذَهَبَ ثُلُثَا اللَّيْلِ قَامَ فَقَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اذْكُرُوا اللهَ، اذْكُرُوا اللهَ، جَاءَتِ الرَّاجِفَةُ تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ، جَاءَ الْمَوْتُ بِمَا فِيهِ، جَاءَ الْمَوْتُ بِمَا فِيهِ. قَالَ أُبَيٌّ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي أُكْثِرُ الصَّلَاةَ عَلَيْكَ، فَكَمْ أَجْعَلُ لَكَ مِنْ صَلَاتِي؟ فَقَالَ: مَا شِئْتَ. قُلْتُ: الرُّبُعَ؟ قَالَ: مَا شِئْتَ، فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ. قُلْتُ: النِّصْفَ؟ قَالَ: مَا شِئْتَ، فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ. قُلْتُ: فَالثُّلُثَيْنِ؟ قَالَ: مَا شِئْتَ، فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ. قُلْتُ: أَجْعَلُ لَكَ صَلَاتِي كُلَّهَا؟ قَالَ: إِذًا تُكْفَى هَمَّكَ وَيُغْفَرُ لَكَ ذَنْبُكَ.


Translation:
Hazrat Ubayy bin Kaʿb رضي الله عنه said: When two-thirds of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would rise and say: “O people, remember Allah, remember Allah. The convulsion has come, followed by the subsequent one. Death has come with what it contains; death has come with what it contains.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I send abundant blessings upon you. How much of my supplication should I devote to sending blessings upon you?” He replied, “As much as you wish.” I said, “A quarter?” He said, “As you wish; if you increase, it is better for you.” I said, “Half?” He said, “As you wish; if you increase, it is better for you.” I said, “Two-thirds?” He said, “As you wish; if you increase, it is better for you.” I said, “Shall I devote all of my supplication to you?” He said, “Then your concerns will be taken care of and your sin will be forgiven.”
فَائِدَہ (Benefit):
حافظ ابن حجر رحمه الله:
«مِنْ أَعْظَمِ الأَشْيَاءِ الدَّافِعَةِ لِلطَّاعُونِ وَغَيْرِهِ مِنَ الْبَلَايَا الْعِظَامِ كَثْرَةُ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ.»
(Badhl al-Māʿūn, p. 333)
Translation:
“Among the greatest means of repelling plague and other major calamities is frequently sending ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ.”
Section Three: Medication (Dawāʾ)
Using Medicine During Illness
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِينَ﴾

Translation:
“And [that He may] heal the breasts of a believing people.”
Hadith 26
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: مَا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ دَاءً إِلَّا أَنْزَلَ لَهُ شِفَاءً.

Translation:
Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah has not sent down any disease except that He also sent down its cure.”
Ruqyah (Healing Recitation) During Illness
Hadith 27
وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ إِذَا اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَقَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ، قَالَ: بِسْمِ اللهِ يُبْرِيكَ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ يَشْفِيكَ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ، وَشَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي عَيْنٍ.

Translation:
From ʿĀ’ishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, رضي الله عنها: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill, Jibrīl would perform ruqyah for him, saying:
“In the Name of Allah, may He cure you; from every disease may He heal you; from the evil of a jealous one when he envies, and from the evil of every (harmful) eye.”
Treating Illness with Olive (Zaytūn)
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿يُنْبِتُ لَكُمْ بِهِ الزَّرْعَ وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالنَّخِيلَ وَالْأَعْنَابَ وَمِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ﴿١١﴾﴾

وَقَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ ﴿١﴾﴾

Translation:
“He causes to grow for you thereby crops, olives, date-palms, grapes, and of all the fruits. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.”
“And [by] the fig and the olive.”
Hadith 28
وَعَنْ أَبِي أُسَيْدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: كُلُوا مِنَ الزَّيْتِ وَادَّهِنُوا بِهِ، فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ.


Translation:
Hazrat Abū Usayd رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Eat from (olive) oil and apply it (to your body), for it is from a blessed tree.”
Treating Illness with Black Seed (Nigella/Ḥabbah Sawdāʾ)
Hadith 29
وَعَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا وَمَعَنَا غَالِبُ بْنُ أَبْجَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَمَرِضَ فِي الطَّرِيقِ، فَقَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُوَ مَرِيضٌ، فَعَادَهُ ابْنُ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَقَالَ لَنَا: عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذِهِ الْحَبَّةِ السَّوْدَاءِ، فَخُذُوا مِنْهَا خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا، فَاسْحَقُوهَا، ثُمَّ اقْطُرُوهَا فِي أَنْفِهِ بِقَطَرَاتِ زَيْتٍ فِي هَذَا الْجَانِبِ وَفِي هَذَا الْجَانِبِ، فَإِنَّ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا حَدَّثَتْنِي أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْحَبَّةَ السَّوْدَاءَ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلَّا مِنَ السَّامِ. قُلْتُ: وَمَا السَّامُ؟ قَالَ: الْمَوْتُ.

Translation:
Hazrat Khālid bin Saʿd رضي الله عنه narrated: We set out on a journey with Ghālib bin Abjar رضي الله عنه, and he fell ill on the way. When we arrived in Madīnah he was still ill. Ibn Abī ʿAtīq رضي الله عنه visited him and said to us: “You should use this black seed. Take five or seven seeds, crush them, then drop them into his nostrils with drops of oil—on this side and that side. For ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها told me that she heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘This black seed is a cure for every disease except al-sām.’ I asked: ‘What is al-sām?’ He said: ‘Death.’”
Treating Illness with Honey
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿ثُمَّ كُلِي مِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ فَاسْلُكِي سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًا ۚ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُهُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِلنَّاسِ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ﴿٦٩﴾﴾

Translation:
“Then eat from every [kind of] fruit and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]. There emerges from their bellies a drink of varying colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.”
Hadith 30
وَعَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَخِي يَشْتَكِي بَطْنَهُ. فَقَالَ: اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا. ثُمَّ أَتَى الثَّانِيَةَ فَقَالَ: اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا. ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ الثَّالِثَةَ فَقَالَ: اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا. ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ فَقَالَ: فَعَلْتُ. فَقَالَ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَكَذَبَ بَطْنُ أَخِيكَ، اسْقِهِ عَسَلًا. فَسَقَاهُ فَبَرَأَ.

Translation:
Hazrat Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه narrated: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “My brother has a stomach complaint.” He said, “Give him honey to drink.” He came a second time, and he said, “Give him honey to drink.” He came a third time, and he said, “Give him honey to drink.” Then the man came and said, “I have done so.” He said, “Allah has spoken the truth, and your brother’s stomach has lied. Give him honey to drink.” So he gave him honey, and he recovered.
Treatment with ʿAjwah Dates
Hadith 31
وَعَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: مَنْ اصْطَبَحَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ تَمَرَاتٍ عَجْوَةً لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ سُمٌّ وَلَا سِحْرٌ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ. وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: سَبْعَ تَمَرَاتٍ.

Translation:
Hazrat Saʿd bin Abī Waqqāṣ رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever eats ʿAjwah dates in the morning will not be harmed by poison or magic that day until night.” Another narrator said: “(Eat) seven dates.”
Treatment with Indian Aloeswood (ʿŪd Hindī)
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ ﴿٨٣﴾﴾

Translation:
“And [mention] Ayyūb, when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’”
Hadith 32
وَعَنْ أُمِّ قَيْسِ بِنْتِ مِحْصَنٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذَا الْعُودِ الْهِنْدِيِّ، فَإِنَّ فِيهِ سَبْعَةَ أَشْفِيَةٍ: يُسْتَعَطُ مِنَ الْعُذْرَةِ، وَيُلَدُّ بِهِ مِنْ ذَاتِ الْجَنْبِ.

Translation:
Hazrat Umm Qays bint Miḥṣan رضي الله عنها said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say:
“Use this Indian aloeswood (ʿūd hindī), for it contains seven cures: it is sniffed for throat affliction, and used (as a remedy) for pleurisy.”
Section Four: Causes, Precautions, and Rewards
Leprosy and Poverty as Consequences of Sin (Hoarding Food)
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ قَالُوا هَٰذَا عَارِضٌ مُمْطِرُنَا ۚ بَلْ هُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُمْ بِهِ ۖ رِيحٌ فِيهَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ﴿٢٤﴾ تُدَمِّرُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ بِأَمْرِ رَبِّهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا لَا يُرَىٰ إِلَّا مَسَاكِنُهُمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْقَوْمَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ ﴿٢٥﴾﴾

Translation:
“When they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, ‘This is a cloud bringing us rain.’ Rather, it is that (torment) which you sought to hasten: a wind wherein is a painful punishment, destroying everything by command of its Lord. Then they became such that nothing could be seen except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.”
Hadith 33
وَعَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ احْتَكَرَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ طَعَامَهُمْ ضَرَبَهُ اللهُ بِالْجُذَامِ وَالْإِفْلَاسِ.


Translation:
Hazrat ʿUmar bin al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Whoever hoards the Muslims’ food (to raise prices), Allah afflicts him with leprosy and poverty.”
Oppression as a Cause of Calamities
Hadith 34
وَعَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ اللهَ لَيُمْلِي لِلظَّالِمِ حَتَّى إِذَا أَخَذَهُ لَمْ يُفْلِتْهُ. قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَرَأَ: ﴿وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَخْذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَا أَخَذَ الْقُرَىٰ وَهِيَ ظَالِمَةٌ ۚ إِنَّ أَخْذَهُ أَلِيمٌ شَدِيدٌ ﴾ (هود: 102).

Translation:
Hazrat Abū Mūsā رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, Allah gives respite to the oppressor, but when He seizes him, He does not let him escape.” Then he recited: “Such is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.” (Hūd: 102)
Plague: Patience and Precaution Bring the Reward of a Martyr
Hadith 35
وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا أَخْبَرَتْ أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الطَّاعُونِ، فَأَخْبَرَهَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ عَذَابًا يَبْعَثُهُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ، فَجَعَلَهُ اللهُ رَحْمَةً لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ؛ فَلَيْسَ مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَقَعُ الطَّاعُونُ فَيَمْكُثُ فِي بَلَدِهِ صَابِرًا، يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لَنْ يُصِيبَهُ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ اللهُ لَهُ، إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ الشَّهِيدِ.

Translation:
From ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها: She asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about plague. He informed her that it was a punishment which Allah used to send upon whom He willed, but Allah made it a mercy for the believers. Thus, there is no servant in whose land plague occurs and he remains there patiently, knowing that nothing will befall him except what Allah has written for him, except that he will have a reward like that of a martyr.
Righteous Deeds as a Means of Deliverance from Calamity
Hadith 36
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: انْطَلَقَ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ حَتَّى أَوَوُا الْمَبِيتَ إِلَى غَارٍ، فَدَخَلُوهُ، فَانْحَدَرَتْ صَخْرَةٌ مِنَ الْجَبَلِ فَسَدَّتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْغَارَ... (الحديث بطوله)

Translation (concise):
Hazrat ʿAbdullāh bin ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrated: Three men from those before you took refuge in a cave; a rock fell and blocked its entrance. They said, “Nothing will save you except to supplicate to Allah by your righteous deeds.”
• The first mentioned honoring his elderly parents by serving them milk before anyone else.
• The second mentioned refraining from illicit relations at the decisive moment, purely for Allah’s sake, and leaving the wealth he had given.
• The third mentioned returning the full, multiplied wage to a laborer who had left without taking his pay.
With each supplication, the rock moved until they exited safely.
Reliance (Tawakkul) upon Allah
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقُلْ حَسْبِيَ اللهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ ﴿١٢٩﴾﴾

Translation:
“But if they turn away, say, ‘Allah is sufficient for me; there is no deity except Him. In Him I have placed my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.’”
Hadith 37
وَعَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ تَوَكَّلْتُمْ عَلَى اللهِ حَقَّ تَوَكُّلِهِ، لَرُزِقْتُمْ كَمَا تُرْزَقُ الطَّيْرُ، تَغْدُو خِمَاصًا وَتَرُوحُ بِطَانًا.


Translation:
Hazrat ʿUmar bin al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If you relied upon Allah with true reliance, you would be provided for as the birds are: they leave in the morning hungry and return in the evening full.”
Avoiding Ḥarām Earnings and Deeds
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَنْ تَشِيعَ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۚ وَاللهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ﴿١٩﴾﴾

Translation:
“Indeed, those who like that immorality should spread among the believers will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. Allah knows, while you do not know.”
Hadith 38
وَعَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «فِي هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ خَسْفٌ وَمَسْخٌ وَقَذْفٌ»، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَمَتَى ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ: «إِذَا ظَهَرَتِ الْقَيَانُ وَالْمَعَازِفُ، وَشُرِبَتِ الْخُمُورُ».


Translation:
Hazrat ʿImrān bin Ḥuṣayn رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“In this ummah there will be swallowing by the earth, transformation (of forms), and pelting (with stones).” A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, when will that be?” He said, “When singing women and musical instruments become prevalent, and intoxicants are consumed.”
Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil to Avert Punishment
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللهِ﴾

Translation:
“You are the best nation produced for mankind: you enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.”
Hadith 39
وَعَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، لَتَأْمُرُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلَتَنْهَوُنَّ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ، أَوْ لَيُوشِكَنَّ اللهُ أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عِقَابًا مِنْهُ، ثُمَّ تَدْعُونَهُ فَلَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَكُمْ».


Translation:
Hazrat Ḥudhayfah bin al-Yamān رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you will certainly enjoin good and forbid evil, or else Allah will soon send upon you a punishment from Him; then you will supplicate to Him, but you will not be answered.”
Fever as Expiation and Deliverance from Hellfire
Hadith 40
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَادَ رَجُلًا مِنْ وَعْكٍ كَانَ بِهِ، فَقَالَ: «أَبْشِرْ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ يَقُولُ: هِيَ نَارِي أُسَلِّطُهَا عَلَى عَبْدِيَ الْمُؤْمِنِ لِتَكُونَ حَظَّهُ مِنَ النَّارِ».

Translation:
Hazrat Abū Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ visited a man who had a fever and said:
“Receive the glad tidings, for Allah says: ‘It is My fire which I impose upon My believing servant so that it will be his share of the (Hell)fire.’”
Greater Trials Bring Greater Reward
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى:
﴿أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَنْ يُتْرَكُوا أَنْ يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ ﴿٢﴾ وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ ﴿٣﴾﴾

Translation:
“Do the people think that they will be left to say, ‘We believe,’ and they will not be tested? We certainly tested those before them, so Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.”
Hadith 41
وَعَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «عِظَمُ الْجَزَاءِ مَعَ عِظَمِ الْبَلَاءِ، وَإِنَّ اللهَ إِذَا أَحَبَّ قَوْمًا ابْتَلَاهُمْ، فَمَنْ رَضِيَ فَلَهُ الرِّضَا، وَمَنْ سَخِطَ فَلَهُ السُّخْطُ».


Translation:
Hazrat Anas bin Mālik رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Great reward accompanies great trials. When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever is pleased (with Allah’s decree) will have (His) pleasure, and whoever is displeased will have (His) displeasure.”
وَصَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالَى عَلَى خَيْرِ خَلْقِهِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ
Translation:
“May Allah’s blessings be upon the best of His creation, Muhammad, and upon his family and all his companions.”
