If a person joins the Jumuʿah prayer when the Imam is in the Tashahhud (final sitting), should he offer two (2) rak‘ahs after the Imam’s salām or four (4) rak‘ahs?
(Questioner: Muḥammad Shāhid Memon)
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
A person who joins the Jumuʿah prayer while the Imam is in Tashahhud has missed the actual Jumuʿah and must offer four rak‘ahs of Ẓuhr instead.
① He is not considered to have caught the Jumuʿah prayer, because less than one rak‘ah does not constitute valid participation.
② After the Imam ends the Jumuʿah prayer, such a person should stand and perform four rak‘ahs of Ṣalāt al-Ẓuhr.
③ This ruling is based on scholarly consensus (ijmāʿ), as cited by Imām Ibn al-Mundhir an-Naysābūrī.
④ The ruling applies regardless of whether the person joins in Qaʿdah (Tashahhud) or any point after the second rak‘ah begins.

◈ Anyone who joins the Jumuʿah prayer after missing one full rak‘ah, including during Tashahhud, is not considered to have caught Jumuʿah.
◈ He must offer four rak‘ahs of Ẓuhr, not two.
