3 Authentic Rulings on Throwing Soil and Giving Talqīn at Death

❖ 3 Sharʿī Rulings Regarding Throwing Soil on the Grave and Talqīn

❖ Question:

Is there any specific method mentioned in Hadith for throwing soil on the grave?
What is the correct method of giving talqīn to someone near death?

✅ Answer by al-Bāḥith Wājid Iqbāl ḥafiẓahullāh

Method of Throwing Soil on the Grave

According to authentic teachings:
There is no specific or fixed method reported in the Aḥādīth regarding how to throw soil over the grave.
This implies that the general customary method of covering the grave with soil is acceptable and valid.
No specific ritual manner is required, nor is there any Sunnah-form for this act.

Talqīn to the Dying Person

When a person is near death, the correct and proven Sunnah is:
❖ To recite near the person:
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰه
❖ The goal is to remind the person to say this as their final words.
This is known as Talqīn, and it is firmly established from authentic narrations.

Talqīn After Burial

There exists a narration regarding giving Talqīn after the burial, but:
➤ That narration is weak (ḍaʿīf) and cannot be relied upon.
Hence, post-burial Talqīn is not a Sunnah and rather falls under the category of bidʿah (innovation).

✅ Summary:

No specific method of throwing soil on the grave is authentically reported.
Talqīn for the dying person is done by reciting لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰه near them.
Talqīn after burial is not Sunnah and should be avoided as it is based on weak narration.
